Double borders are the answer when you have frequent colour changes, to save having to sew or weave in ends - and essential for mosaic crochet where you change colur each row..

Bear in mind that mosaic crochet is double thickness so a thick border works very well. You might not like the look on a single thickness blanket so do a test piece first.

You may also have to make some adjustments in the slip slitch foundation row if you have stitches of different heights at the edge. Mosaic usually has a single border stitch to work into.

Video tutorial from mosaic expert Tinna Thorudottir Thorvaldar here:

I have tried double borders and was not happy with them.

As for mosaic crochet, I really admire blankets and throws made using this, they look very impressive. However, I found it so boring! I did half a blanket and sold it unfinished with all the extra yarn on an auction site.

I haven't done any mosaic crochet but have made blankets using tapestry crochet and supposed to be tackling another one at the moment. It's sitting there beside me in a bag while I'm distracted on Gransnet.

Double borders sounds interesting…will certainly have a look.

I love that there is so many new techniques to learn!

That blanket is gorgeous. I use my stash to make up 12 inch squares, knitted corner to corner, which are then crocheted into blankets of various sizes by a friend. They then go off to Yemen, Syria, Ukraine, or wherever else people need them. I collect similar squares from various friends so between us all we have made well over 130 blankets so far.

special Care Baby Units usually welcome small hats for prem babies.

Tiny blankets, bonnets and gowns are also always welcome for stillborn babies. I thinks the charity is SANDS but will confirm.

I used to knit squares which went off to Turkey which a group of ladies sewed together to make blankets for refugees.
Sadly, I think the organiser became ill and I lost contact with her.

Crocheting them together sounds easier!

I just found this one online Taransay:

Our group made blankets for care leavers; one kind member lined each one with fleece.

Yes it is SANDS who welcome little blankets etc for stillborns.

I have crocheted several lap blankets for care homes too. They are quick and easy to make and perfect for residents who spend a long time sitting in chairs or wheelchairs. Lovely, bright colours.

I did not see the post above before I posted so sorry

FranP Sun 14-Sept-25 17:50:37

Never used for anything big, but simply knotted all my bits together before starting and hung the loose ends outward to make a "designer" bag

I like the idea of SANDS. I know a couple of young mums who lost babies and I would love to support them. Thanks for all the ideas.

Taransay, I cut the colour I’m finished with, leaving about three inches, then knitting it in along with the new colour for the first ten or so stitches. You then just have to cut the pieces left.

I’m knitting this cardigan with leftovers in my stash. Hoping that I have enough to finish it.

Thanks for the link Taransay

If not, perhaps you could knit the sleeves plain with different coloured cuffs.

Ps it's very pretty!

I started a big ‘stash’ blanket (or largely stash) during the first lockdown. All garter stitch on a fat circular needle, one strand of chunky plus one of DK, different colours each row, no sewing in of ends, just knot them and later make into tassels and trim.

Only then I started making things for Knit for Nowt, and it’s still lurking, unfinished, in a drawer.

I made a similar ‘rainbow’ one with tassels, only smaller, just double DK, for the Gdcs a few years ago.

I have sent blankets to ‘knit for peace’ in the past. They support people all over the world.

I loved your blanket so much Taransay it has inspired me to learn to crochet.

It started off as a brilliant way to use up my yarn odds and ends BUT in order to achieve a tasteful variation I have had to buy a couple of balls of yarn!!

I may become addicted to crochet as it grows so quickly.

Taransay Sun 05-Oct-25 20:41:57

Aww thank you Fairislecable…that’s so nice.

Be warned…..it’s very addictive.😁😁😁

I have a poncho to complete then I’m going to look at the charity links
