Counselling

Has anybody had first hand experience of counselling? If so did it help?

My GP suggested it on Friday but I said I couldn't really see how talking would help. I got another months worth of anti depressants but have managed to stop the sleeping tablets & thought I was improving slightly.

However yesterday While clearing out some of OH stuff & clutter I found some things that he'd written (pre Alzheimer's) that have completely shocked & upset me. I want to go & confront him & have it out with him, but of course that is completely out of the question now. I was going to have visited him this afternoon prior to this (he's in hosp in dementia unit) but couldn't bear to as I'm too cross & upset with him at the moment.

I've spoken to my kids about it & they're very supportive but it's not enough. Don't know how to get over this. Having second thoughts about counselling. Anyone any ideas?

posie I would agree with everyone that the counselling may well help and is worth giving a try.

I can see you are very angry with what you have found but I do wonder if it really was pre the dementia. When I look back at the progress of the disease in Mum I know we did not recognise the early stages.

I found this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S4_Eu9EHy2Y quite helpful in realising how long this could have been affecting her. Obviously one stage will carry on into another but this did help me realise my darling Mum had been battling with this for longer than we realised.

Thanks Gracesgran. I've had a look at your link, it's very sad, it's such a devastating disease for all concerned.

That & what I found would be hard enough to deal with but it's a whole mix of other things that I'm struggling with as well.

I feel that I've wasted & sleepwalked through my life - let somebody else tell me what I can & can't do sad

Now I can/have to, make my own decisions & go places but I don't know how to, or where/what to do.

Thank goodness for DGC's smile
