I think when we move back to our 'reinstated' house, hopefully this month, I might reintroduce afternoon tea.

Trouble is the school run - we need to leave 2.40 at the latest, so it can't be before and would have to be after, plus four grandchildren. It would be very civilising for these youngsters to sit down to cucumber sandwiches and, I think, a glas of milk? Only one is lactose intolerant, so he'd have to have squash, and GD1 doesn't like cucumber, so she could....?

STOP! Abandon ship. Perhaps at the weekends, but not Sunday because DH is out golfing. And not Saturday because I volunteer ....

Modern life, doesn't really lend itself to afternoon tea does it sad

No - they were lovely days and I was spoiled as we lived in a village and the children came and went by school bus. Very Postman Pat! With usual working hours I don't think the tradition exists much at all nowadays, but it was nice while it lasted.

Definitely a cup for tea / mug for coffee - don't know why ... just is ...

And best biscuits for afters, though can't decide on a favourite. Maybe the ones with jam and cream in the middle!

A few years ago at British American Tobacco, the tea bell rang at 3:30 daily and a full afternoon tea complete with cake and sandwiches was enjoyed by staff and visitors alike.

Mind you , they also had vast trays of cigarettes that staff and visitors could "enjoy" !

Nice and healthy then grin

smile covered all the bases Imperfect

They were allowed to smoke at their desks also and when challenged about the effect on non smokers I remember the CEO said that they had the best air filtration system in the world so non smokers were not impacted !!

And if anyone believes what he said - Ive got a bridge you can buy grin

Cucumber and Marmite for me please, preferably with the crusts left on, or with prawns and Rose Marie sauce would be lovely.
Thank you ?

I've come late to this thread.
Cucumber by itself in a sandwich is not for me! I treat it as an accompaniment to other things. My favourite sandwich which includes it is ham, lettuce and cucumber with salad cream. I leave the skin on.

No cucumber sandwiches thanks, but I'll tolerate a couple of slices on top of tinned salmon mixed with mayonnaise in a sandwich. I can't really see the point of cucumber, except to soothe tired eyes. My grandson eats it in industrial quantities - takes it in his lunch box to school every day.

My granddaughter can eat vast amounts of it too, that and cherry tomatoes. She can consume a whole punnet of those at a time. She must be chockful of vitamin C

nanaandg, that filtration system might not be as daft as it sounds. According to QI, the air in aeroplanes was better when people were allowed to smoke on board because clean air was drawn in and the smoky stuff removed. When smoking on planes was stopped, apparently airlines decided they didn't need to clean the air, and not doing so saved them a lot of cost, so they stopped. Now they just recycle the old air and it's far less hygienic.

Thatbags interesting !

No wonder I inevitably come back from a long haul flight with a cold . I cringe when I hear some poor soul coughing on a flight !

rosesarered Fri 05-Feb-16 17:26:31

Ana Fri 05-Feb-16 17:56:18

Isn't it usually 'More tea, vicar?' grin

grannylyn65 Fri 05-Feb-16 18:23:31

annsixty Fri 05-Feb-16 18:28:23

I always do ,that is where all the water is.
I cut a length, halve lengthways and scoop out all the seeds with a teaspoon, then cut finely in crescents.

grannylyn65 Fri 05-Feb-16 18:47:34

Will def try that ?

thatbags Fri 05-Feb-16 18:52:48

I only eat cucumber for the water content wink

rosesarered Fri 05-Feb-16 20:06:06

Well, Ana the tea for the vicar goes with the cucumber sandwiches!Followed by madeira cake, and other goodies.

rosesarered Fri 05-Feb-16 20:06:51

Cucumber needs a shedload of salt to taste good though.

Ana Fri 05-Feb-16 20:32:25

Ooh, no! I think it tastes fine as it is...

granjura Fri 05-Feb-16 20:56:45

Cucumber sandwiches- and chip butties- at the other end of the scale, make me very aware that although I've lived all my adult life in the UK- I shall never ever be fully British, lol. I mean!

As for cutting the crusts off- I could never ever believe the waste of it all ;)
Give me crusty bread and my best local Gruyères any day. Bon appétit.

Ana Fri 05-Feb-16 21:13:07

We don't all like chip butties, granjura, or fish finger butties - both sound absolutely horrible to me! grin

Marmight Fri 05-Feb-16 21:19:27

Cucumber with cream cheese, thinly sliced brown bread and no crusts were my Dad's 'piece de resistance' when I was a child. These days I am very partial to a tomato and marmite sandwich

thatbags Fri 05-Feb-16 21:28:15

Crusts aren't wasted if you have chickens.
