Some of you may know a bit about me!
Anyway, have lived alone for over 25 years, retired on State P, a small work one and have a wee job
Out of the pension pot I have bought DS one 2 holidays ) they both work hard and struggle.
My oldest son ( 44) has probably worked a month in his life, is highly intelligent and been given chances all his life. He looks like a tramp (apologies to tramps! ) and spends all his benefits on weed and now has no teeth but can't be bothered to sort it, over the years I have shelled out thousands to try to keep him out of trouble and when his benefits are stopped because he 'forgot to attend interview' He has been in prison twice in his teenage years.
Well, I don't drink ( 30 years sober !) smoke ( now ) I don't get out much! And I have a permanent stomach problem, so don't mention curry!!
So, I suddenly had a mini meltdown, thought f*
them all and have booked a 12 day tour in India, this will use quarter of my savings!
Have I finally lost it ? Should I cancel? I am very very apprehensive!
Lastly, I have holidayed abroad 3 times in 30 years!
I generally trust gn's wisdom!!

Do it with bells on! Get out there now and get your wardrobe together, get excited, pack, enjoy and don't look back. You have done your job, now it is your turn to have some freedom.

Get some probiotics and take them for a while before you go, they might settle your tummy a bit, the tablet form, not the drinks.

Have fun. flowers

Oh how I would love to be going too! Not possible for me due to complex family demands but you must go and have the trip of a lifetime! Enjoy!

I'd never planned to go to India, but complex reasons meant my daughter got married out there and I joined them for a week. We managed to get in a trip to the Taj, it was well worth it. I thoroughly enjoyed it, so go for it. I came back with a dodgy stomach for several weeks but I have been told it may well have been the milk in tea in the cheapish hotel we were in. My daughter came back pregnant with my grandson, but I don't think that is compulsory!

I hope you have a wonderful time.

When I went to India I was advised by someone who had lived there to drink lime soda - freshly squeezed lime juice with soda water, with either sugar or salt added (salt because of the heat and sweating) It's very refreshing and good for preventing stomach upsets, as lime juice is anti-bacterial to some degree. I had a great time, no stomach upsets at all and I enjoyed the food, which was spiced but not "hot". You'll have a great time.

Am Overwhelmed by your lovely support, I am so not used to 'putting myself first' ! I have checked various insurances and one actually covers my condition which I was surprised at! I am going with Solo Holidays and there are 11 already booked, room for 5 more! The nice man at Solos has printed on ticket that I have a gastric pacemaker and can 't go through scanners!
I am nervous already and probably won't tell anyone just yet!! ?
So many thanks again, I have struggled on my own for so long; it is fantastic to have such support ???

Go for it girl - but make sure you take out travel insurance NOW. We booked a holiday to Jordan and Petra and 2 weeks before we left I developed AF and we couldn't go Unfortunately as usual I'd left it till the last minute to take out insurance and we got very little refund. So cover yourself and then enjoy it - I'd say you totally deserve it sunshine

NonnaW Fri 08-Jul-16 17:46:59

Go for it, have a wonderful time!

Fairydoll2030 Fri 08-Jul-16 17:22:12

Enjoy yourself but don't drink the local water and pack plenty of Immodium!!

Elrel Fri 08-Jul-16 17:09:29

Have a wonderful time, we'll look forward to hearing about your well deserved holiday. A friend spent several weeks in India alone and loved it, put a complete lack of tummy troubles down to being vegetarian! As a poster says above also be wary of salads, and ice in drinks.

To add to some previous advice, we always go to the nurse at our local surgery a couple of months before we go and she checks what injections are needed. We used to pay for a private prescription for malaria pills but find that a pharmacy can do this now. (We used Superdrug last time but I think Asda is doing it now too).
Don't forget to get a visa.

Seriously, write a blog - we will be following avidly!

millymouge Fri 08-Jul-16 16:43:10

Go for it and enjoy yourself. Make sure you take out a health insurance just in case you need it and you won't need to worry about anything. Also a good camera for lots of photo. You will, have a fabulous time.

Bellanonna Fri 08-Jul-16 16:35:22

I've got nothing to add to the foregoing, comments. Perhaps this Is just the first of many other adventures. One thing, you must tell us all about it!

DaphneBroon Fri 08-Jul-16 16:34:11

Just lay in industrial quantities of Immodium and have the holiday of a lifetime!!
You could write Best Marigold Hotel Part III when you come back to make a bob or two!

Oh grannylyn I am proud of you, what a wonderful thing to do. Your son has made his own choices, he is an adult and you have done all you could, more than manhy would have done, so don't let him hold you back. I haven't been to India but the people I know who have seem to have avoided stomach problems and all had a wonderful time, some truly awesome images. We have eaten in the 'Indian' restaurant (Sindhu) on the P&O ships and have found a really wide range of food, the majority of it is spiced but not overly spicy if you get what I mean. Friends also tell us that in India there is a range of food, so don't worry too much. I know you will be sensible with the food, take what medicines you miht need with you, ask for advice and help when you get there but most of all enjoy it all. A wonderful experience, I suspect if you don't go you will always regret it. Do tell us all about it when you return and have so much fun.

marmar01 Fri 08-Jul-16 15:31:26

go on it sounds fantastic, about time you looked after yourself. get some probiotics and start them before you go, it keeps tummy working.

Cherrytree59 Fri 08-Jul-16 15:23:05

Go have your adventure.
Recharge your batteries

Things might have changed when you get back or they will be just the same.
But you will have had your adventure, when the winter comes you can close your eyes and be back in India
No one can take that away from you.

So best foot forward in to thesunshine
