I wouldn't say that your DD was neglectful, I see it as allowing her children to stand on their own feet for a little while – essential preparation before they fly the nest. She would have known whether she could trust her children and how well they were likely to cope on their own.
18 and 15 doesn’t seem particularly young to me. It’s true that everyone matures at different rates, but at 18, I was working in London and renting my own (miniscule) bed-sit and my 14-year-olde sister would occasionally come and stay for a few days.
We left DS2 home alone for two weeks when he was 17 and he was absolutely fine. A year later he went off to uni, so at least he had some previous experience of fending for himself.
Your DD trusted her boys and they have not let her down. Everything seems to have worked out well and she will be happy to know she can safely go off on holiday again. Perhaps next time they might even manage to do their washing!
