What to call a grandfather?

Hello,
I've fairly recently found out I'm going to be a grandmother so I'm hoping to pop on here to ask all sorts of questions in the coming months from the wise and experienced! While I've decided to go with the name Nonnie (which was my grandmother's name) the new grandfather to be is still debating his. I've found quite a bit on the site about names for grandmothers, but not so much for grandfathers. Grandad is taken (other grandparents) and Grandpa makes him feel too old. What are your other halfs called? Or are there any grandfathers on the forums who could give me some ideas? Thank you!

Back to pram research - what an eye-opener!

My husband is still complaining as he did not get a choice with the latest grandsons. Their mother insists on calling him Grandpa which he hates, even though all of our other 10 grandchildren call him Grandad. I have mentioned that he wants to be called Grandad and we always sign cards and presents with that title, but she still insists!

We're known as Grandma and Pappy and the other set of GPs are Nan and Gramps.

Mine live in Wales so I had better change my name to Nain then in case some stranger might be confused.

I would think very carefully about using a title that has only local meaning. I would have no idea what a child might be referring to as a nonnie and would assume that any reference to nana would be about fruit.
Much better, as others have suggested, to use the terms grandma and granddad and then let the child produce their pronounciation as a cute nickname.

My OH is Gangan, the SiL calls his grandfather Pompa! Lots of choice then smile

First GD couldn't pronounce Grandpa/Grandad and it somehow got changed to Balmpop! Luckily he didn't mind in the slightest but it did amuse the rest of us.

I'm Nanny. (My DC decided I should be officially Nanny Og from Terry Pratchett's Three Witches as they seem to think there's a resemblance!). DH is Grandad Grumps - because he relishes being grumpy.

"Bumpy"......!

Hello granahoy and congratulations. I hope you share the profound joy of the situation as most of us here seem to. Just wonderful. As to handle for Grandad........ Well........ I have a rather unusual one myself and it's no big deal. I just gave it a lot of thought and what I wanted emerged. The adults were a bit 'WHAT?' but the children had not a minute's problem. Go with your fancy and don't be even remotely traditional unless you really want to. Happy days indeed. My heart warms for you all.

my fathers parents was very distant both by miles and emotionally, very proper and was called grandad and grandmother, sometimes gran, later by her name at her request. my welsh and much loved mothers parents was called grancher and nan/nanny by all of cousins, brothers.

Lewlew Thu 27-Apr-17 13:11:31

I love some of these names, especially radicalnan's Welsh ones!

My father's father was called Gramps or Grampy and my niece and nephews, etc called my late dad that. I hope my DGD uses it, but not fussed if she doesn't... I don't think DSS is concerned what she calls him. DILs father is Opa and mum is Oma.

So far I am called.... BA-MAW! grin She's not saying her 'g's yet. Husband is BOP-PA vs Poppa for her dad.

"Our 3 year old GS" ! Predictive text huh?!

GrammaH Thu 27-Apr-17 13:08:55

Lovely news! As you can see, I'm Gramma & DH is Graffa to put 3 year old US. Don't know where Graffa came from, he just said that's what he wanted to be known as so it stuck. My cousin's children called their Grandfather " Granfer" so I suppose its similar.

Jalima1108 Thu 27-Apr-17 13:00:38

None of the grandchildren struggled to pronounce it
Goodness!! How amazing that babies just learning to talk and very young toddlers were able to say 'Grandfather'.

Willow3 Thu 27-Apr-17 12:49:09

The other grandparents are Granny and Grandpa and we are nanny and Pops as my husband wont be called granddad!

kwest Thu 27-Apr-17 12:48:46

My husband chose to be called Grandfather. None of the grandchildren struggled to pronounce it. Their friends love the idea of it. I'm Granny, I am happy with that.

Jalima1108 Thu 27-Apr-17 12:32:10

DH used to call his step-father Pop
(never thought it was posh or pretentious)

jocarter Thu 27-Apr-17 12:30:55

Hubby is called Pops by our grandson people often say it sounds posh and pretentious but who cares Dominic loves his pops

Jalima1108 Thu 27-Apr-17 12:30:51

What about Nonna and Nonno (Italian)? You could be Nonnie for short

Any Welsh in the family? Nain and Taid are popular but my Welsh friend is known as Bampy to his DGC.

Jalima1108 Thu 27-Apr-17 12:25:05

Baba is Grandmother in Croatian! smile
Grandad is Dida

DH is Grandad as he is the only DGF for some of the DGC.

PenTur Thu 27-Apr-17 12:16:57

Congratulations! We are GiGi and Pa, the other grandmother is a Greek Yia Yia.

HootyMcOwlface Thu 27-Apr-17 12:09:50

My children had nanny and granny for the grandmothers, (granddads no longer with us) but they were often disappointed trying to buy birthday cards etc with granny on. We have to get grandma usually, although I have noticed nanny is not so common now either(although nanny RIP now too).
So just thought I would stick that side of unusual names in there!
