Garlic crusher

I've had numerous garlic crushers over the years, but in recent years they don't seem very good. A few weeks ago I bought a new one, (not particularly cheap) and IMHO it's rubbish. Instead of crushing the garlic through the holes it pushes it up the side. Can anyone recommend one that really works please?

mince, not mice! ?

I tend to grate mine. I used to use a crusher (still have it), but it's faffy as it leaves chunks of garlic at the side and also requires quite a bit of effort to push the garlic through. If I don't want it as a fine mice, then I chop it.

I have had a couple of traditional ones but they just made a squishy mess. I bought a cylinder thingy, you drop the cloves in and turn the bottom and out pops thin slices of garlic. DH uses a sharp knife and chops by hand, he said the machine is too fiddly to clean. Ahem, dishwasher beside you in the kitchen.

I have the Hicorfe Garlic Press and my friend recommended it to me and it works well and it has been used for 3 years.

This one from Joseph Joseph is the best garlic crusher I’ve ever come across. It comes apart for cleaning and is really sturdy. www.josephjoseph.com/en-gb/clean-press?gclid=CjwKCAiA_c7UBRAjEiwApCZi8TYkR0GHTm1Jm9dMEya1aiaOAcORNxT5J3fH86sELNwivmp932qQShoC1tgQAvD_BwE#92=21

Oh, why would anyone want to be near garlic. Horrible stuff that gets put into everything these days. I really feel ill when I am near the smell of it and it has ruined many a good meal out when other diners meals contain it.

I now make an effort to always ask if my choice contains garlic as often it isn't listed as an ingredient. I've even changed my seat on the bus when someone has sat down next to me stinking of the stuff.

No objection to all of you enjoying it - just stay away from me!

Mine's from Lakeland, have had it for years and it's brilliant.

I use a dried garlic grater, or garlic-infused olive oil.

I used to get smelly hands after crushing garlic with a blade, but if you just rub your hands all over your stainless steel taps, the smell goes. Same idea I suppose as those soap shaped bars of stainless steel that used to be sold.

get yourself a garlic press that has a flip basket like this one amzn.to/2EVH3rp there are plenty to choose from online. make sure you get stainless too!

Glad it wasn't just me then! I thought maybe my pressure on it was very uneven.

ElaineI Tue 08-Aug-17 00:34:36

Welshwife DH Joseph Joseph one did exactly same as yours! We should have taken it back but wasn't really worth it!

Mine is from M&S and had it for years. Sometimes I just chop after bashing with the handle of a big knife as per Jamie Oliver!

I thought I was going mad - photo did not appear for ages after I pushed the post button the first time!

Welshwife Mon 07-Aug-17 17:05:08

See if photo shows this time!

This is what happened to my Joseph Joseph crusher

LadyO Mon 07-Aug-17 16:04:22

Joseph Joseph crusher is fab... no mess, no smelly fingers... scoop out garlic with a teaspoon and rinse crusher under the hot tap! Job done!

Another vote for Pampered Chef here. I've had mine for years and it is still going strong. You can usually find Pampered Chef stuff on Ebay.

I also have the Chef'n garlic zoom, it works a treat and is so easy to clean just a quick run under the tap will do it. No more trying to poke garlic out of tiny holes and not succeeding.

I always chop, dice or crush with a knife. Lets face it we never see a professional chef with a garlic crusher!

Every few months I buy several fresh bulbs and peel them and put in nutri bullet with plenty of virgin olive oil and whizz it so it's still got texture and keep in small jar and use from there, nicer than shop bought and easier to use, keeps for ages

Moneyboss Sun 06-Aug-17 02:51:25

Used hildaw's tip and crushed garlic with sea salt today. It worked a treat. No more garlic crusher for me.
