So what makes you laugh out loud?

Having recently completed the advertising survey for over 50s, I was reminded that we are so often stereotyped - not least in the humour department. This got me to thinking about what we find really funny - I am sure there will be a diverse range of responses - which will further illustrate we are not a homogenous, age-defined, brain-declining bunch!

Things that have made me laugh out loud recently have been ...

Clever wordplay and definite 'naughtiness' on Gransnet - I do love funny - and still kind - to-ing and fro-ing here.

Gifting my DH ' Game of Thrones Series 1 DVD as a birthday present (missed it on TV, but it has been highly recommended to him by several like-minded friends) only to have him describe it as 'Lord of the Rings with tits' in my hearing. When I told DD1 of this, she seemed horrified for a moment, said "Euuugh, that's about children! " and then corrected herself with "Oh no, I was thinking of Lord of the Flies!"(There's a good literacy teacher for you!) And yes, I did tell her that her generation haven't invented sex (a line I stole from my own MIL!)

When I am texting and the word 'lovely' gets change to 'lively' because of predictive text - adds a bit of spice to several messages!

C'mon then - what about you? grin

Lots of the above make me laugh but I bought a couple of birthday cards last week that made me laugh out loud in the shop.
I hope the recipients enjoy them. The card designers are so good at observing us all.

I forgot to mention Phoenix! Thank you Imperfect, I didnt think it was, but you start wondering when comedian after comedian just DOESNT make you laugh.
Aside from the swearing (lets face it, Dave Allen made the air turn blue, and he had me in stitches) I think one of the problems I find with some, is that they appear to be laughing AT the public, not with them - but maybe that's just me.
Take the English Comedian of the year, Nick Page. Sorry, not for me.

Same for me, sliver.
Many thanks.

I laughed out loud the other day, something one of you (MA, thats you) had written to me. Havnt done that for a long time. Cheered me up a treat. thanks?

Morgana Sun 17-Sep-17 12:09:12

Oh and I forgot to mention Peppa. Pig!! Some of the episodes make me roar with laughter and G.D. 1 says "No granny no laugh at Peppa. "

Imperfect27 Sun 17-Sep-17 05:58:23

Lisalou, if by 'modern comics' you mean the ones who think they must be funny because they swear a lot and make 'witty' observations about sex and bodily functions, then no, I don't think your SOH is broken.

Had forgotten to mention Peter Kay's Care share - another good example of subtle, clever and wry comedy that is able to poke fun at our quirks without being 'nasty'.

Just a Minute.
I'm sorry I haven't clue.
Round the Horne, especially Sandy and Jules, but I suspect the PC brigade would be on me line a ton of bricks for saying that.
I loved Mr Humphreys and Mrs Slocome in Are you going served too.
I like Paul Merton and Andy Hamilton.

Morgana Sat 16-Sep-17 19:56:41

Love lots of those mentioned. Phoenix nights was very funny. 2012 I loved. Loved car share, especially the one about dogging and the one where they went to the zoo. Looking forward to the new series of W 1 A

Lisalou Sat 16-Sep-17 15:03:29

Terry Pratchett, definitely; Dave Allen is an old favourite, Michael Mcyintire, Billy Conolly, all good stuff. I find a lot of the "modern" comics, really dont do it for me - is my sense of humour broken?

I saw this the other day on one of those silly signs you hang up: "Forget love; I want to fall in chocolate!" It really did make me laugh out loud - but after the week we had just had, hysteria was setting in anyway!

Old performances of Billy Connolly and Victoria Wood
My grand children's comments
The recent topic on Gransnet about vibraters I laughed until I was almost crying

I don't like stand up comedians except for Billy Connolly who was always so amazingly 'right' with his humour.
Back in the day I loved Dave Allen. He had DH and I in stitches, but probably not PC nowadays !
Never laugh at sit-com type humour. Always seems forced.

There was a new comedy called The Other One on BBC last night. I was determined not to like it; it certainly wasn't subtle. But I laughed out loud several times. Monty Python and the Holy Grail always has me in stitches; ditto Blackadder. I only ever watch Would I Lie to You by accident and wonder why I don't make a point of watching it. I think I miss a lot of funny stuff that's on the radio. I wasn't keen on Car Share.

Kevin Bridges is totally brilliant - and when he does an English accent I find that soooo sexy!

Imperfect27 Thu 14-Sep-17 11:12:13

Daddima I think you are right that we tend to laugh more in the company of others. In some senses, that is my litmus test for being REALLY funny - if I end up laughing out loud in an empty room it really has tickled my funny bone! smile

Daddima Thu 14-Sep-17 11:07:03

I like observational comedy, like Billy Connolly, Peter Kay, and Kevin Bridges, and the chat of family and friends.Oh, and I know it's bad, but people falling over always makes me laugh.
On telly, I can still laugh at the Royle Family, but very few things make me laugh out loud, especially when I'm on my own. Does anybody else find they're more likely to laugh out loud when there's somebody else in the room?

GinnyTonic Thu 14-Sep-17 08:44:36

Productive text and the spill chucker make me laugh most days. Yesterday someone obviously wanted to laud the benefits of involvement in events at care homes. She intended to say the BIGGER events were very popular, but a change of vowel caused a hasty amendment!

I love to watch Only Fools and Horses it does make me laugh out loud. Also the gay guy on Goggle Box makes me laugh too, I have the same sense of humour as he does.

I also enjoy 'still game' I think its called?

MissAdventure Wed 13-Sep-17 20:01:07

I love Mike Leigh's awkward comedy. Abigail's party is fabulous, and painfully funny.

blossom14 Wed 13-Sep-17 19:59:06

My teenage grandson makes me laugh out loud with his musings.

As he only has a younger brother DH and I asked if he would have preferred a sister.

The answer: Nah, Girls have feelings!

Eloethan Wed 13-Sep-17 19:35:31

Thanks so much for the bat video - it was hilarious!

Eloethan Wed 13-Sep-17 19:30:35

I like lots of different humour - from standups ranging from Billy Connolly to Michael Macintyre, and many more, including Hal Cruttenden and Sean Lock.

I like some of Mike Leigh's more edgy comic/comic/tragedy screen plays such as Abigail's Party, Nuts in May and Grown Ups (which still makes me howl with laughter).

Like many people, one of my all-time favourites is Fawlty Towers and I also enjoyed Jack Dee's Lead Balloon - and Would I Lie to You us usually very funny - especially Lee Mack.

Whenever I hear anyone ordering "two soups" in a restaurant it always reminds me of Julie Waters in that sketch MissAdventure and it makes me smile.

I'm not keen on some of the more sexually explicit comedies that some people seem to like.
