Do vegans wear wool?

Well, just that, really. I know that (most) don't wear leather shoes, obviously you can only get leather from a dead animal (ooh, just thought, they could have garments made from snakeskin, providing it had been shed/sloughed) smile

But what about wool?

Jalima1108 Thu 04-Jan-18 17:55:25

I have a friend who keeps alpacas - much loved pets but they do need shearing and their fleeces are spun and knitted into garments.
They are well cared for, happy and do need to be sheared in the spring to be comfortable.

Jalima does your friend kill and eat the alpacas at the end of life, do you know? No idea how long the lifespan of an alpaca is though?

WilmaKnickersfit Thu 04-Jan-18 18:02:59

This is the site I got my Mum's alpaca bedsocks from

I found this company who make and sell footwear, suitable for vegans. Some of their shoes are made out of felted wool hmm

I don´t think that vegans expect sheep to disappear from the mountainsides of Scotland or anywhere else. They just want to add their little bit to the preservation of the Earth. They are mostly young people with ideals, and weren´t we that once? The fact is that with the growing afflluence of the first world, there is a growing demand for beef. Hence, the horrendous destruction of rain forests in South America in order to breed cattle.

Jalima1108 Thu 04-Jan-18 18:11:07

Chewbacca, no she doesn't. They are quite old and as our friends are moving they have sold them with the house! I don't spin or else I would have had some fleece from them, it's so soft and warm.

I've been researching vegan shoes too. It seems that the leather look, waterproof ones are mostly made of polyurethane. Some of the boots are lined with faux wool which is also a man made material. There are concerns about the toxicity of the chemicals needed for the process of binding polymers.
I understand that vegans wouldn't want to wear the skin of dead animals. I have an aversion to it myself especially leather sofas. I don't think they can claim that this is good for the environment though...

Chewbacca Thu 04-Jan-18 18:21:50

Everything we do has an impact on the environment, to a greater or lesser degree. The best we can do is to try and use ethically sourced products as far as is possible. Personally, I have no bother eating meat, fish and eggs; wearing leather shoes and woollen and linen clothing and benefitting from drugs with animal bi products in them. But if vegans dont want to do that, that's fine. Doesn't make one of us right and the other wrong. Just different. smile

Suffering succotash! gillybob (to quote Yosemite Sam.) Succotash is a complete protein source and suitable for vegetarians and vegans because it's sweetcorn and butter beans (also known as lima beans) cooked together. There are many recipes online. The trouble is that often the young girls who become vegetarians or vegans, through concern for fluffy baby animals, turn up their noses and won't eat the foods that will replace meat as a protein source. My husband often joked that our daughter was a vegetarian who didn't like vegetables! She still won't eat butter beans and she's 33 years old. However she's no longer vegetarian. (I'm not suggesting that eating succotash is the only way for Vs to get the essential amino acids needed for growth and repair, by the way. I only just recently found out what Yosemite Sam is shouting about!)

On the subject of wearing animal skins or wool, someone on here ages ago described being accosted in the street and verbally abused for wearing faux fur because it mimics wearing real fur. Pleather is surely faux leather so mimics wearing real leather and many man made jumpers are faux wool. They are sometimes worn in the name of fashion as well as, or rather than, practicality. I think, if you're going to harangue someone in the street because you are convinced you are right (as in this case), you should do your homework thoroughly first and only then jump on your soap box. I hasten to add that I don't know any vegetarians or vegans who would do that!

I don't exploit my cat. I think he exploits me. Sleeps 23 hours a day an eats the rest of the time.

Jalima1108 Thu 04-Jan-18 19:36:56

I think the alpacas I mentioned are in complete charge of my friends too!

WilmaKnickersfit Thu 04-Jan-18 19:51:06

I saw a day out advertised for alpaca trekking. I thought I would get to ride one, but you walk alongside them. blush

Jalima1108 Thu 04-Jan-18 20:03:35

They're not very big grin

Kevin and Katie were very tasty btw

Chewbacca Thu 04-Jan-18 20:06:25

Kevin and Katie are the alpacas? And you ate them Jalima? How could you! shock grin

Jalima1108 Thu 04-Jan-18 20:09:09

No, they are were the carrots! grin

lemongrove Thu 04-Jan-18 22:45:17

amt101 grin yes, pusscats do exploit their owners.Big time!

lemongrove Thu 04-Jan-18 22:51:39

I am very happy to see many vegetarian menus around these days, offering more choice than the usual veg lasagne.
I sometimes even order a veggie meal.
Wouldn't want to eat that way all the time though, imagine no roast chicken, bacon sarnies, sausages, etc.
It’s all just a matter of different choices, nothing is either good nor bad, although the few vegans I know never look very well and are really pale.

lemongrove Thu 04-Jan-18 22:52:54

Jalima mmmm, carrots, my fave veg, sorry Kevin and Katie.

WilmaKnickersfit Thu 04-Jan-18 22:55:28

Jalima I realised that when I had a look at the website. I did look for a big chap who might manage to carry me and then read some TripAdvisor reviews that explained the trekking was done using Shank's pony and not on the back of the alpacas! tchgrin

At least Kevin and I have Katie went together! tchgrin

WilmaKnickersfit Thu 04-Jan-18 23:06:12

I thought cats had servants not owners? hmm

It hadn't occurred to me the increase in meat eaters opting for a vegetarian option when eating out was improving veggie options for everyone. I'm very grateful for that, so thank you. wink

It's rare now to look at a menu with no veggie options at all. Although I've been vegetarian for over 20 years, I am fussy. I don't like peppers or mushrooms, but unfortunately so many veggie options have these as ingredients. Not keen on aubergine or celery either. Just because I'm veggie doesn't mean that I like every veggie. blush grin

Chewbacca Thu 04-Jan-18 23:09:20

My DS and DIL are also veggies but neither of them like mushrooms, courgettes or aubergines. I feel as though everything I cook for them is cheese and tomato based. Any recipe suggestions would be gratefully received.

Please ignore the above it shouldn't have been posted and will, I hope, be removed.

I am having problems at the moment. I am awaiting carpal tunnel surgery. My thumb and first two fingers on my right hand are numb and unuseable so I am typing with my ring and little finger and keep hitting all kinds of odd keys by accident.

Chewbacca Thu 04-Jan-18 23:47:49

Hope your op is not too long to wait M0nica and all is well soon. My friend had the OP last year and has had good results.
