I think it's an embroidery square Lisagran - unembroidered by the look of it!

But still in good enough condition for you to attempt it?

The one on the left looks like Batman

It looks as though it should have another half with a hook or clasp to fit the loop. Or maybe it is part of a stirrup or tackle for a horse or a camel? WW1era.

Do you remember a TV programme which brought puzzling things in for people to solve? I think Frank Muir may have been on it.

I am fairly sure this (original picture) featured in one - or at least it looks like it.

When you are repairing chair seats with webbing, as they used to in the old days, you pull the webbing through this object, then brace it agaisnt the side of the seat, pulling to make the webbing taut, then hammering in the tacks before letting go and trimming the webbing.

Does that make sense?

I should imagine any well-established antiques dealer could tell you what it is.

If it’s got little “feet” on the back, is it a stand for a hot pan / dish / plate? Could you have a candle under it, to maintain the heat of dish, etc?

If thtey seem to have been added, maybe someone converted it into a teapot-stand or pot-stand. That still doesn't clarify what it started off as.

It looks quite old and worn.

My immediate thought was something to do with a fire- to hold in front and help it "draw"? or perhaps to stop heat from burning you while you do something through the slot? But then I wondered about a letter box cover. It's the right size.

What a mystery. I had a look on google images and found something similar, but can’t copy the image.
It was a trivet for putting a copper kettle by a fire, but it had longer legs.
