Stockpiling?

Yesterday the woman in front of me at Waitrose had a trolley filled with larder items - I jokingly mentioned Brexit and she replied yes she was preparing and very worried shock

She was mid-40s and looked normal!

In anticipation of Tuesday's vote, is anyone stocking-up?

"Let them eat trifle" !

I still do not understand why some people think UK, as a small independent country, would have to buying power /pressure to strike money saving deals.

We know independent corner shops are more expensive because they do not have the benefit of the supermarkets who buy in greater quantity so can broker better deals which is the same as UK vs EU!

'the' not to

Isn’t the UK the 6th largest economy in the world? I’m sure I read that somewhere.

janeainsworth Sun 13-Jan-19 16:31:26

Ooh you’re even posher than me jalima?
Yes I did try rapeseed oil once, but it seemed as expensive as olive oil, but without any flavour. I suppose it would be better than lard ?

I remember the loo roll shortage. Luckily, I had access to supplies so was able to acquire a couple of rolls each week.

Also the sugar shortage, which was dire for us as we made our own wine, back then. There was a glass shortage, too, i seem to recall, as I remember buying Marmite in tins. Let's not forget the electricity shortages, too - the rolling power cuts that meant you had to plan exactly when to cook your dinner, if you only had an electric cooker.

Over the last few months I've been stealthily encouraging DH to eat more vegetable based meals so I suppose you'd say we're more 'flexitarian' than vegetarian.

The last time he helped me unpack the shopping he commented on the number of tins of pulses, tomatoes etc., I'd bought. Knowing that any mention of a diet ending in 'arian' is likely to send him into a steep decline I told him I was stocking up for Brexit.

He nodded approvingly. grin grin

Rapeseed oil doesn't have much flavour, janea
I like it for cooking but prefer olive oil drizzled on salad, vegetc.

DH likes salad cream hmm

merlotgran Sun 13-Jan-19 17:12:47

Rapeseed oil makes lovely, crispy roast potatoes.

Telly Sun 13-Jan-19 17:23:51

I know where tea and coffee comes from, surprisingly enough! I think there could well be problems with the supply chain. So any way it will get used in the end!

Telly Sun 13-Jan-19 17:24:37

Come to think of it my coffee comes from the Netherlands.

Rapeseed oil’s great for frying and roasting, as it doesn’t smell. I’ve never tried the cold-pressed sort. At the moment we’re using argan oil, from Morocco, on our salads. It has to be the food grade sort though, not the stuff you put on your hair and skin.

As for toilet rolls, I heard it on good authority today that we do not have enough factories in the UK to manufacture enough toilet paper to wipe the arses of the nation. This would be the worst possible consequence of Brexit for me. Fortunately I have had the good sense to save newspapers to cut into squares and thread onto string.
Not much comfort though if you get all your news online.????

kittylester Sun 13-Jan-19 18:22:08

It's ok! If we run out of toilet rolls we gave a huge stack of Dh's Nottingham Forest programmes and it's quite apt really as they have been doing cr*p lately - apparently!

Nonnie Sun 13-Jan-19 18:29:52

Umm Telly, don't think I've seen any coffee plantations in NL grin

Could you use it on your hair, though? It could be cheaper than the one sold for hair!

SueDonim Sun 13-Jan-19 20:12:16

I use rapeseed oil sometimes, as it's grown just up the road from me. I also burn logs made from the residue, starting the fire with fire lighters also made from the residue. No air miles and few road miles!

newnanny Sun 13-Jan-19 21:38:15

I am not stockpiling. I have enough in freezers and cupboards to last us a month except for fresh milk and I even already have long life so I won't be buying more. However I will buy a new sack of puppy food and a couple of dozen tins just in case of supply issues in first couple of months of a no deal as my puppies have sensitive stomachs and do not like to change brand of puppy food.

GrandmaKT Sun 13-Jan-19 21:51:55

Surprised nobody has mentioned WINE yet! Have tried to stockpile, but end up drinking it! wine

Maggiemaybe Sun 13-Jan-19 22:04:37

Could you use it on your hair, though?

hmm Good point, Jalima. I might be trying that tomorrow. If I have to wear my woolly hat all day, I’ll blame you. grin

PECS Sun 13-Jan-19 22:08:43

Gosh..glad I just ordered 48 rolls of 'who gives a crap' loo rolls. If I ration the sheets used per loo visit I might be ok for a year grin

BlueSapphire Sun 13-Jan-19 22:51:49

Mumsnet mums are stockpiling apparently.....

Jalima1108 Sun 13-Jan-19 22:53:17

I tend to use Argan Oil before I shampoo my hair - a reasonably liberal amount. It seems to tame it down a bit.

BlueSapphire Sun 13-Jan-19 22:53:43

I might stock up on wine....

merlotgran Sun 13-Jan-19 23:13:49

If I stock up on wine I'll have to hide it or DHL will rub his hands in glee and get stuck in. wine

Nannytopsy Sun 13-Jan-19 23:38:25

Gin. So it is an English spirit - just don’t tell!
