New, small, fun car - any suggestions

DH has always enjoyed driving a small, nippy, City-type car and I have the bigger 'family' car. He had a Toyota IQ which he loved and I didn't mind driving at occasionally.

His last car needed replacing at around the time he retired and, as he had started doing volunteer driving, we went for a Yaris. This car is now known as the 'Mistake' and languishes at home while we fight about who drives 'my' car.

Can anyone suggest a smallish car that is fun to drive.

We have looked at Smart cars, vw Up, Peugeot 108 Top and various other cars.

Have a look at the Daily Telegraph's motoring 'agony' uncle Honest John's page - he gives advice and rates cars.

RedRidingHood - what a coincidence, I had a Suzuki Swift prior to the mini and mpg were better! I sold my Mini Cooper a few years ago.

Glammy57 I just bought a mini cooper and one thing that's not brilliant is the mpg. It's a 1.5 petrol though and I'm used to a 1.2 Suzuki swift.

Mini Cooper - easy drive and park. Great miles per gallon.

I had a little Suzuki Jimny 4x4 and absolutely loved it. It is only 3 door but seats fold to take lots of luggage. I see they have now updated it and would love another one. It was a fun to drive and higher position was great.

You could upsize a bit and go for a Polo. I've had two and they were great fun to drive. My family would squabble over who was getting to drive my car! grin The first one had the basic engine but it still had plenty of pizazz! I drove from Scotland to Yorkshire in it, no problem.

The Up is a no go as they have stopped doing the top two cars in the range.

The Puegeo got dreadful reviews.

Anyone got an Aygo?

How about the new Ford Ka active. A friend has just bought one and it looks lovely, a lot bigger than the original Ka.

VW Up - smart, fast, economical- easy to park. Not great for long journeys I suspect, but I guess it is designed as a city car. My OH loves his Up.

I have had a Smart four door for 4years now & love it. The boot is a bit small because that is where the engine is. All my shopping goes on the back seats. If you are interested search out a proper Smart dealer as I also found that the Mercedes people are disinterested & their after sales service is non existent.

I love my fiat panda. 30 quid road tax and lots of miles per gallon. Dead easy to turn. Mine has carried paving. Huge bags of catlit. Mymothers walker. Baby seat and piles of shopping. Also table and chairs a coffe table a tv and lots of rubbish. Not all at once tho.

I love my souped up Mini.
I have also found the customer service both at Mini and BMW (where it goes to be serviced) to be excellent.
Mine was second hand but if you are buying from new there are tons of options to personalise it to your taste.

Electric electric electric! I love the look of the small SUV Kia electric. We are leasing a Honda Civic ( Canada) for now until there are a good variety of electric vehicles available. With the planet the way it is now, I cannot see using gas fuel anymore as part of the solution. Happy Hunting.

I had the VW UP as a courtesy car when my Golf was being serviced. It was a sporty trim. I loved it and was sad to give it back at the end of the day!

Fiat 500 I test drove had no guts..that's not fun..Yaris is supposed to be good but it looks gransy, the UP is too small and too expensive. The Adam looks the best but it's very small. It's going to be a compromise whatever you buy. Let us know what you went for.
