Present for a new baby

I was about to buy a babygro-type suit for a new baby in the family then chanced to see something in the press that suggested most new mothers get far too many of these and probably have other ideas for better presents. Any suggestions out there?

I buy a book that can be read parent/child together when baby is old enough to perch on adult's knee. Why? Because no-one does!

I buy a token gift for the baby (like a rattle) and something lovely for the mum - although nothing scented, obviously.
