We're really happy to read threads like this and know that the site is hitting the mark with you. But we also know that for all of you who are regular posters, there are many more who, for whatever reason, haven't yet joined in on the discussions and we wondered what could be done to make the site more welcoming to newbies? If you are new (or can remember back to when you were) what barriers do you think users may come across that stop them from joining in the chat? And if you are a lurker (although we prefer to think of you as reader) if you're happy to post just this once to let us know what stops you usually, we'd really appreciate it. Any insight you can give us be most welcome and rewarded with a virtual bottle of wine grin
Thanks
GNHQ

Sorry you feel you were ignored BBbevan on the Be Nice to Each Other. I must admit I haven't seen your posts on there probably because I did post on there and was duly reprimanded for mentioning three or four people who had been very kind to me! So I know where you are coming from.
Just stick with it, don't go, I'll look out for you.

Mapleleaf Fri 21-Feb-20 13:25:39

I think, BBbevan quite a lot who posted on that thread didn't get a mention, me included, but I really don't think it was down to being deliberately ignored. I think it's probably more to do with the fact that it is a thread that moves at speed and your comment can get missed rather than deliberately ignored.
I hope you decide to continue posting on threads, and if I see you post something, I'll try and comment if I see it in time, if it's something I'm interested in. (Please don't take that as an insult, it's just that some topics don't appeal to me so I tend not to look at or respond to them).

I think the Be Nice to Each Other thread went off at a tangent slightly. The OP wanted each poster to say something nice about the preceding poster. However people then just spoke about their favourite posters or the ones who cheered them up so quite a few people felt they had been overlooked. That was a shame but as Mapleleaf said the thread moved quickly.

I think Urm started this post with the very best intentions, however some posters did not play ball and ignored the previous poster and went on to speak about the posters they like.
This was not in the spirit of the post, and as it shows above a poster felt ignored. I did not post on this thread because I knew exactly what would happen.

.....also gone

rafichagran Sun 23-Feb-20 11:18:35

It's not hard, the OP asked for people to say something nice about the previous poster. This did not happen, no excuse for the rudeness of ignoring other posters.

Callistemon Sun 23-Feb-20 11:36:19

I did post more than once because some posters seemed to have been left out but I didn't expect responses after the first time (and don't think I got any subsequent ones).
It just got a bit muddled.

!!Form an orderly queue please!!

Threads do go off piste a lot, but there is no need for posters to go off piste ( joke)

When a whole thread is deleted as in the case yesterday from ALEVELMASTERS do we ever get to know why? GNHQ stated something to the effect of "refer to forum guidelines" I looked at the forum guidelines and really couldnt see what was inappropriate in this thread? There were only a few posts on it ? Can anyone shed any light on this please??
The original post is still on Gransnt cafe and has not been deleted
I'm just a bit bemused that's all

Callistemon Tue 25-Feb-20 14:45:06

GNHQ must have good reason to delete a thread.

May7 Tue 25-Feb-20 15:12:21

Thanks Callistemon
I just wondered if there are circumstances when GNHQ explain why they’ve deleted a thread? Or are those the rules like it or not
Seriously this thread seemed so innocent and I can’t fathom as to why it would be deleted

Callistemon Tue 25-Feb-20 15:55:33

Perhaps it was not as innocent it seemed.

May Good Evening! Ask them! smile I send HQ an email each time, asking which commandment has been flouted and they always reply immediately to my home email address, not that I always agree, but that's just me I guess. hmm
My accompanying suggestions to put an explanation on the particular thread to save anyone having to ask have always been ignored; I can't see why confused, but give it a go!
Good Luck

May7 Wed 26-Feb-20 15:01:49

Thank you Rufus2 I was going to ....but on reflection (in this particular circumstance ) I think I now know why the thread was deleted. I was in the middle of answering the OP when it was shut down and it just took me by surprise.

Another recent thread has been deleted but GNHQ gave a reasonable explanation for that not just breaking forum guidelines

In future I will do as you suggest until probably they deleteme ?

Callistemon Wed 26-Feb-20 15:07:15

May7 it's most disconcerting to spend a while typing (and sometimes even correcting grin) a post, trying to post it, wondering why it won't post then the thread suddenly disappears!

May7 Wed 26-Feb-20 15:22:25

Yes I agree but hey ho. Got me wondering about it for most of the evening though and then the penny dropped. I really must get out more?
Far too much of a Reflector am I

Rufus2 Thu 27-Feb-20 11:40:26

Callistemon You can say that again! I was doing a post for Good Evening Thursday when "Poof!", it disappeared. "If at first you don't succeed, try, try again" sad

LaraGransnet (GNHQ) Thu 27-Feb-20 14:14:47

Hi @May7 We promise we wouldn't delete anyone for simply answering a question. Sorry to hear you were in the middle of posting when that happened. We've discussed the issue at HQ and from now on where possible will try give more context if we do delete a thread. Hope that helps! smile
