How do I keep safe when forced to have workmen in home

I am having a new boiler fitted next Tuesday by 2 workmen who have been looking after my CH for 20 years. No choice, they came to look at my leaking !4 year old one this morning and it's very ill.

How do I protect myself? They will be mostly in the kitchen and garage but will have to check radiators all round the house, I suspect. I know they will say they'll be careful, but it will be so easy to do something silly.

Obviously I will wipe surfaces when they've finished but it will also be so easy to miss some. Thinking of using diluted Detto, or should it be diluted bleach?
I suppose I just have to take the risk.

Please do not use bleach on polished or lacquered furniture - vinegar and water will work as a disinfectant and not damage the furniture.

Air the house well before they come and after they leave.

Ask them to keep the kitchen door closed while they are working in there.

Alexa, do NOT dilute the Methylated spirit or Surgical spirit, it needs to be above at least 60% alcohol, that is also not 60 Proof as 60 Proof is roughly only 30% alcohol. If you spray a surface with full strength, 99.9 % alcohol you should wait for at least 10 seconds before touching the surface, If you use full strength alcohol it will evaporate away and there is therefore no need to wipe it dry.

Eerie. Just noticed an advert offering quotes for new boilers has appeared on this page.

A very nasty post Phloembundl as someone else has said there are a lot of good men and in my long life I have only come across one workman that I would not recommend.

Talking of boilers, we had a new boiler fitted last Tuesday by British Gas. The new system works perfectly, hot water, hot radiators, even have a fancy Hive to use BUT it came with a price - not just the cost of a new boiler which needed scaffolding outside as an upward flue was needed - but the damage the two engineers did is unbelievable.

The one guy put his foot through the loft door and then damaged a radiator valve in the hall so that water spilled everywhere over the wooden floor. It is now warped and will require the whole area to be redone. The other man came back the next day with a piece of wood to replace the loft door, painted it with one coat of paint and said that would be ok. Well, actually, it's not OK. It just looks shoddy and, of course, when you don't want to look up to see the shoddy piece of work what do you do?

When I complained about the floor this same man told me I could claim on my house insurance and was very surprised when I said, no, I would be claiming from British Gas.

The scaffolding was removed quickly the next day but we are still left with the rubbish which was supposed to be collected by another company.

Sorry to go on. I've just looked at the original post about protecting oneself from workmen. By the time I'd finished, these two men were the ones wanting protection.
