How much is too much for a top?

I love this top. I keep looking at it. But it is totally impractical and too expensive. But it's lovely. Would you pay £165 for it? What's the most you have ever paid for a top?

Craftycat Thu 10-Sept-20 11:46:11

If you love it & can afford it then buy it. You can't take your money with you so enjoy it while you can. It is lovely.

I'm with Dee1012 on this - I do think about cost per wear and only spend £££ on something I know I will wear a lot.
The suit I bought for my daughter's wedding, lovely but too showy for other people's weddings, went straight to a posh second-hand shop the following week. I got back half what I paid for it but better than having it hanging in my wardrobe unworn.

Loobs I saw that dress on Mary Berry too and I thought, if she left that shop without buying it, I'd be Very Cross. It was sensational and looked terrific on her. I so hope she got it.

If you really love it and can afford it then why not get it? Goodness, there are few enough sources of delight these grim days. The items I've bought that have cost the most have tended to be 'keepers' and are still being worn years later. I'd buy it. Which brand is it?

I agree with knspol.

If you love it you will find ways to wear it often, and you will feel good when you do. A treat now and then is good for the soul, so I think you should buy it and enjoy it.

At this time of year I might wait a couple of weeks to see if it goes in the sale, but otherwise wouldn’t hesitate.

NemosMum Thu 10-Sept-20 11:20:45

I think it's a huge amount of money to be paid unless it's made of silk woven by fairies! If I ever feel like spending a large amount, I wait for a week to see if I still feel the same way. Usually, I don't. I think you should ask yourself why you want it - what 'need' would you be fulfilling? However, if you do decide to buy it, you would be putting money in circulation, and someone will benefit from that.

knspol Thu 10-Sept-20 11:16:22

You obviously really like it so, as long as you can afford it, buy it! It's a treat and we all deserve one of those now and again. Enjoy your new top!!!

I caught the end of the Mary Berry programme last night and she tried on an absolutely beautiful dress - it looked stunning. It was in Paris and I can imagine it would have cost a small fortune but it was lovely - I would have been tempted.

QuiltyElaine Thu 10-Sept-20 11:06:12

I have started buying fewer more expensive things that will last. I tend to spend a bit more on basics and classic styles, if it is more of a statement piece like this blouse then I would probably wait and see if I could pick it up on sale, BUT If you can afford it and you love it then I say go for it!

Callistemon Thu 10-Sept-20 11:03:59

I hope they can sort it this time, Grannygravy.
Keep them supplied with brew

trustgone4sure Thu 10-Sept-20 10:58:41

I wouldn`t pay that amount for a top regardless of my income.
The most i have paid was £75,and i have had it for 14 years and still love it.
Burgundy heavy lace.
Made in England too.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 10-Sept-20 10:54:01

Unfortunately not callistemon we had nearly four months of remedial work inside and out two years ago (finishing mid December) only for the problems to reappear.

Hopefully these investigations can finally find the reason and it can get sorted once and for all. It’s not much fun having a big house with big upkeep which is currently unsellable

Yellowmellow Thu 10-Sept-20 10:52:20

If you like it and will wear it (and can afford it)...have it. In the past lve gone for cheaper options and have never liked them so now ld rather have one top that l really like than 2 or 3 mediocre tops lm not keen on. Quality over quantity now.lm older and have no dependants

H1954 Thu 10-Sept-20 10:50:41

I would be looking at the construction of the garment, type of fabric, how it was finished and no doubt work out how much cheaper I could make it myself, so, no I wouldn't pay that price. Apart from that, I don't like it anyway but each to their own.

Ramblingrose22 Thu 10-Sept-20 10:49:11

Trisher - if you love it and will get good use out of it I would buy it. Life is so difficult at the moment for all sorts of reasons and anything that lifts the spirits must be a good thing.

Like others on here, I rarely find anything I like so if I see something I like very much I am always tempted to buy it.

Libman Thu 10-Sept-20 10:38:27

I don’t think the OP was asking whether we liked the top so it’s a shame that some on here are expressing their negative opinions. Trisher - buy it if it will give you pleasure and you can afford it. Sometimes wearing something that makes us feel good is a real boost to the spirit. Doesn’t matter if it cost £14 or
£140. Often you can’t tell anyway!

Callistemon Thu 10-Sept-20 10:34:21

We have men in today, they are currently using a Kango to excavate a corner of our sitting room.
Goodness me, Grannygravy, have you discovered oil or gold under the sitting room floor?

You'll be able to afford all the silk shirts you need.

I threw out a load of silk shirts a few years ago, what a pity as they were classic.

Purplepixie Thu 10-Sept-20 10:32:03

I love it and yes I would buy it. We only live once!

Rosiewhite1 Thu 10-Sept-20 10:31:22

Like others, I would not even be looking at a top priced in that category. I buy the majority of my clothing from charity shops. Items are always washed or dry cleaned by me and I do check for wear and tear.....even the sorting ladies can miss the odd defect! Check buttons, zips etc. I also buy items for my home. Admittedly, you have to be prepared to do an amount of wandering round, but most towns have a plethora of charity shops....and coffee shops for that sit down and a cuppa. I enjoy the 'hunt'.

At the moment you CANNOT try on an item of clothing, but if you have only paid £2 or £3 or even something off the many £1 rails that appear, then you can just re-donate. Shops are allowing you to ask for a refund (I believe... but not sure) within a certain time. The pandemic has channged so many things so its worth asking at each shop what the rules are.
I'm horrified at the prices charged in retail stores for clothing. If you have to have something special for a one off event, it makes sensje to pay as little as possible for it?

A lot of charity shops keep clothing on a separate rail for special occasions. Cocktail dresses, sequinned tops, wedding dresses etc. Just ask if you can't see what you are looking for. Staff are generally friendly and helpful and will go into the back area to check for you.

trisher Thu 10-Sept-20 10:28:56

Oh seadragon thanks for the 'indelible stains' reminder. I have a white linen top (cost next to nothing) I am currently struggling with and I can at least soak and bleach it!!!! I'm stll not sure what the stain is. I'm sure it wasn't that bad when it went into the machine!!

pinkjj27 Thu 10-Sept-20 10:23:18

It’s not my thing at all, but I only ever buy from charity shops and eBay because I won’t buy fast fashion because of the environment.
I never pay that on any clothing when there are people starving. If I loved a top that much I would search on eBay or 2nd hand sites to find it or something like it. But I guess that's just me.

seadragon Thu 10-Sept-20 10:22:06

I have bought tops like that in the sales and have learned not to. They seem to attract indelible stains instantly. However I have always regretted not buying a Gudrun Sjoden teal jumbo corduroy - remember that? - jacket and trousers combo because of the expense. So if any you have one in a size 14, even in a different colour for sale, please let me know. I'm serious!

GrannyGravy13 Thu 10-Sept-20 10:19:14

We have men in today, they are currently using a Kango to excavate a corner of our sitting room. Thought I best dress for the occasion silk shirt, contrasting jeans and make-up..........can you tell I am fed-up with Covid regulations (still adhering to them though)

Anything that makes us feel good in these trying times is worthwhile.

trisher go for it ???‍♀️

HHBBNN54 Thu 10-Sept-20 10:18:34

I couldnt justify paying that much for a top myself only looking for crop trousers in the sale but have not found any at the right price yet in larger sizes

rowanflower0 Thu 10-Sept-20 10:17:29

If I can't machine wash at 30 and hang on hanger to dry - I would not buy it.
Have bought some expensive Jaques Vert tops, but prefer to get them from retail outlets or from ebay - where someone has worn it once for a wedding, then sold it!
