Anyone doing ‘Sober October’? I can’t decide ... ?

Well, I’ve not had any wine or a G&T yet. So I can decide tomorrow!

What put me off (I’ve done ‘dry’ January before and once gave up alcohol for Lent - 48 days!) is someone once said it’s the people with a ‘problem’ who embrace this nonsense as moderate drinkers know they don’t need to do it anyway as they are more sensible.

What do you think?

I am thinking of doing Sober October to lose a bit of weight. I only tend to drink at weekends or when out with friends for an evening. Wish me luck.

I read somewhere tgat it was a nearly alcohol free October. With this in mind I had two half measures of wine topped up with soda water last night I do have some very nice alcohol free red wine as well.

No.
I don't drink alcohol. Not out of conviction, it just always seems a waste of calories to me. If it was Chocolate-free-ish October, now that would be a challenge :D or would have been until I gave up dairy. smile

As a moderate drinker I’m not doing sober October especially as it’s my birthday month. At the moment a glass of wine or a g&t are very relaxing especially as we can’t socialise. Big difference in my mind between a social drink and drinking because you have an addiction.

I very much doubt that people with the "problem" in other words those who really drink too much jump on to either the bandwagon of dry January or sober October.

It is to be hoped that those who do do either, are the so-called moderate drinkers who will get the change to evaluate whether they are actually drinking more than their health and their housekeeping money can stand.

By doing so they may be able to stop drinking or stop drinking too much, while it is still realtively easy to stop.

Once you are an alcoholic it is very, very hard to stop.

SueDonim - after ? years of Gransnet, I just "got" your username! Doh! grin wink
As to Sober-ish October, I am on antibiotics til Sunday, and on a fairly serious diet, but have agreed to 14 days of no alcohol and a donation to Macmillan!

I stopped drinking 2 August so now 61 days. Read the book This Naked Mind, completely changed my view of social, moderate drinking.

Dry October ? We are in lockdown, the TV is absolute rubbish, only box sets and wine keep us sane.

GrannyGravy13 Fri 02-Oct-20 08:15:37

vegansrock we discovered Aldi delivered wine during the first lockdown ??

Beechnut Fri 02-Oct-20 08:11:57

I thought about it....and that’s all I’m going to do ?

Iam64 Fri 02-Oct-20 08:09:05

I’m going round to MawB’s for a bender till December. I’m not a big drinker but the idea of a puritanical October in the North West under lock down has no appeal

kittylester Fri 02-Oct-20 08:04:56

That would be piling on the agony at this time!!

Whitewavemark2 Fri 02-Oct-20 06:16:33

I have wine with dinner. One glass. Have done for ever. So no I’ve never given up alcohol.

If I go out say to a party etc, I may have 3 or 4 drinks through the evening. I always have nothing for the following day or two as I simply don’t fancy it, and it allows my liver to recover. Sadly no parties since before lockdown

CocoPops Fri 02-Oct-20 05:18:15

Dry October? Why, why why?

vegansrock Fri 02-Oct-20 03:40:37

Can’t stand these threads where people come on and say they only drink a thimbleful of Sherry at Christmas and anyone who drinks more than that is some sort of wino. In answer to OP - I do dry January, so think that’s enough. I have just ordered a couple of cases from Aldi ( yes. - they do wine deliveries) and to be honest, it’s bad enough not being able to go on holiday or meet up with family and friends, so
I’ve no intention of giving up my glass or two. Life is hard enough at the moment without denying myself every small pleasure.

grannylyn65 Thu 01-Oct-20 23:27:02

Sober 34 years, not much point really

Maggiemaybe Thu 01-Oct-20 23:19:13

I’ll be up half the night going to the loo now. grin

Maggiemaybe Thu 01-Oct-20 23:18:07

Absolutely not. I’ve already had two drinks with the family zoom quiz tonight. A pint of bitter shandy and a bottle of Erdinger alkohol frei. Born to be wild, that’s me.

Callistemon Thu 01-Oct-20 23:05:09

Oh dear. Too late.

BlueSky Thu 01-Oct-20 22:47:19

I became tee total after realising that I was drinking too much only to find out that ONE glass of wine/measure of spirit is actually good for you!

LauraNorder Thu 01-Oct-20 22:39:44

Hope the Argy isn’t closing for October!!

LauraNorder Thu 01-Oct-20 22:38:40

‘I don’t drink alone, that’s why I have a dog’ Maw smile
I don’t have a drink problem, I drink, I fall over, no problem.

MawB2 Thu 01-Oct-20 22:27:10

EllanVannin

Alcohol and medication aren't good mixers.

I’d better give up the pills then grin
Seriously I don’t drink alone (that’s why I have a dog) no, actually find wine tastes quite different in company.
A wee single malt on the other hand .....?
