What do you do with used cooking oil?

I thought that I would start a new thread, as my query got lost in the "bins and eggs" . I don´t live in the UK. What do you all do with your cooking oil? I rarely fry now. Recently, we had to call in a plumber to deal with blocked drains. He told us off for putting oil down the kitchen sink, I hardly ever do that. How do you deal with yours?

tanith Thu 11-Mar-21 17:47:46

I hardly use any now but DH used to have a ‘chip pan’, when that needed clean oil I would use a funnel put it back into a container and it went into the general rubbish bin.

Jaxjacky Thu 11-Mar-21 17:48:18

I use very little, never deep fry, so just wipe the cooled pan with kitchen roll and chuck it in the bin,

I rarely shallow fry with a spray I dry the pan with kitchen roll. I don’t deep fry I bake in the oven with spray oil. I don’t like greasy food it clogs your veins as well as drains.

I only ever have a small amount and I cool it then seal in any non-recyclable container in the landfill rubbish.

I have never had to deal with used oil. I have never deep fried and haven't even shallow fried in decades, then I just kept the oil and reused it.

I now have an air fryer and that uses a mere spray of oil.

All you non-fryers, well done !!

Artaylar Thu 11-Mar-21 18:19:22

As a (totally daft) first year uni student, I once poured it back into the plastic bottle. Needless to say the bottle melted. The worse thing about it was that it was another student's oil, oooh the shame of it.blush

kittylester Thu 11-Mar-21 18:23:02

Oops! We have a chip pan!! I keep an empty oil bottle to pour old oil into and we take it to the dump.

NotAGran55 Thu 11-Mar-21 18:26:53

Any oil I use goes into the dish itself e.g sautéed onion , garlic etc .

What do people fry as a matter of interest ?

Niobe Thu 11-Mar-21 18:28:18

I don’t deep fry much either but if I do I put the cooled oil into an empty plastic tub and put into the general waste.
Sometimes there is a lot of fat left in the roasting tin when we have a roast and I leave the tin to cool with several paper towels in it to absorb as much fat as possible and then bin them.

jusnoneed Thu 11-Mar-21 18:43:40

Same as Kitty, when I clean out the fryer the old oil goes into a jug and then when I put fresh oil in the old stuff gets poured into the bottle. OH takes it to the tip.

From recyclenow.com - Cooking oil and fat shouldn't be poured down sinks as it can cause blockages. Small amounts of cooking oil, fats, plate scrapings of fatty food can be added to your food waste recycling service. If you do not have access to a food waste recycling service, put it in a sealed container and place in the general waste bin.

shysal Thu 11-Mar-21 18:55:35

I don't use anything but spray oil for cooking, but sometimes the fat from the food comes out, as in sausages or a roast.

harrigran Thu 11-Mar-21 18:56:03

I pour oil into a discarded container and pop kitchen towel in the top, put on the lid and put in the general waste bin.

M0nica Thu 11-Mar-21 19:56:47

I have never cooked chips until - I got my airfryer -. Now we have them quite frequently, but of course the only fat that is used is a spray of 1Cal. The air fryer 'saucepan' goes in the dishwasher.

Like Notagran55, I do not fry anything. Sausages, bacon etc go on the griddle and as I said, chips in the air fryer.

Unlike some others here, we do use a deep fat fryer. We have a large compost heap and pour the used oil onto it. Despite warning about not putting oil in compost, we’ve done it for years and our compost is excellent- no traces of greasy grunge!

Don’t have any at all
I only use a little olive oil for stir fries most is used up in the cooking then I wipe the pan with a kitchen towel so no I never deep fry so never have any left over
Only use oven chips

EllanVannin Thu 11-Mar-21 20:59:17

Dripping from the butcher for doing chips. Butter for frying.
I don't use oil for cooking but buy extra virgin olive oil for salads or dipping bread in grin yummy.

rubysong Thu 11-Mar-21 21:19:16

We don't have much but when we do I sprinkle porridge oats to absorb it then put them out for the birds.

SpringyChicken Thu 11-Mar-21 21:25:34

Back in the day when we had a deep fryer, I used to save the bottle the oil came in and pour the dirty oil back in. Husband used to take it to the tip for recycling. I think it was in the paint recycling section.

Hithere Thu 11-Mar-21 23:59:56

Some people use it to make soap

that's a good idea.

this question came up on MN, and the number of people putting oil down the sink was alarming, some thinking adding hot water/ detergent would be ok. it's not ok of course. but i was astonished at the lack of received wisdom among them, many of whom are well educated, high earning people, doing responsible jobs, but had never noticed what their parents did, or thought to ask.

I've mentioned on here before that my husband uses it to run his 27 year old Fiat.

I do not use very much oil these days, so never have any excess. However, I still have some special containers from rs'.
Lakeland with replaceable 'liners'. Assume they still sell them. You just pour any old oil onto these and then it will soak it in and as each liner gets full it is just thrown away in normal rubbish.
