A clothes company

Hi,
I have stumbled across a clothes company called Floryday- has anybody had any dealings with it? It has a sale on at present and there are some good bargains. Some of the items are horrendous but there are also some gems.

TillyTrotter Sun 11-Jul-21 06:38:50

Thank you MerylStreep, that’s very interesting.

I've seen many an ad for Floryday and New Chic, really liked the clothes but just knew there was something off about the companies so never ordered. Sorry if I'm derailing, but any suggestions for companies who actually sell those sort of ranges? I'm aware of a couple but keen to learn about new ones as I'd rather give my money to someone reputable.

It was the prices that put me off. I could not see how garments of the quality shown in the pictures could possibly be sold at the prices advertised and decided that they must be a scam of some sort.

Greeneyedgirl Thu 08-Jul-21 09:20:03

Too true Mumofthree. Another one is buy cheap buy twice.
If a garment is very cheap then it stands to reason that costing in of fabric, plus manufacture and profit, someone, somewhere is being exploited. Problem is we have outsourced much of our manufacturing to other countries, and then castigate them for polluting and their huge contribution to global warming.

I bought what I thought was a lovely tiered maxi dress from there, it looked gorgeous and was described as poly cotton...it was only about £10 so I took a chance. It is the most awful cheap shiny fabric I've ever seen...I wouldn't order again...as the saying goes..if it sounds too good to be true it usually is...

Avoid companies whose adverts don’t show the models’ heads/faces. The photos often show designer clothes and are very enticing, but I’ve read that they’re rip-offs from legitimate sources & bear no relation to the poor quality garment you will actually receive.

Kissngate
You obviously didn’t read the scathing comments from me and lots of others on FB. I think it was about this time that I got my first ban from FB.
I have to admit, though, I might have gone over the top with my comments ?
As my OH would say thats not like you sarcastic emoji needed.

kissngate Wed 07-Jul-21 19:28:57

I have to hold my hand up and say I got duped by Floryday around three years ago. Certainly didnt receive anything like the photo online. Returns policy non existent so it went in the charity bag. Wouldn't buy from any Chinese outlet again.

I bought a pair of their sandals. They were so badly designed, truly practically impossible to wear. However I wore them once, and the strap broke! Bin.

Please do your own research. Trust Pilot is not what you think it is.

I try and buy clothes which will last, and factor in the cost per wear. If an item was expensive to buy but lasts years and I get lots of wear out of it, it works out cheap. I think generally people have a few clothes in their wardrobes they wear day in day out, and a lot of other stuff which they hardly ever wear.

TillyTrotter Wed 07-Jul-21 17:38:11

To check a company I’m interested in using for maybe the first time I google the company name and “trustpilot reviews”.
It will give you recommendations or warnings from folks who have already used them.

BlueBelle Wed 07-Jul-21 17:29:35

Well we each have our own ideas of cheap if I ve paid £6 or £8 and I m still using it after 15+ washes I think it’s perfectly viable
If I start having bad service I won’t use again but so far they ve been good for me
It’s always worth hearing both sides of the story I can only answer for what I ve bought and how it’s been for me can’t I ?

I did get a lovely Wallis top for £2.25 from the charity shop yesterday so all good for me

MawBe Wed 07-Jul-21 17:12:16

I can beat that! I “found” a linen kaftan top from Sahara in amongst the summer things in the wardrobe which I know I bought and wore the year we went down to Kent to see the Tour de France go past my sister in laws house.
That was 2007 - and what is even more exciting was that I can still get into it!

M0nica Wed 07-Jul-21 15:18:39

I have an East dress I bought in 2014 and wear a lot, my Jaques Vert coat (bought on ebay) dates to 2016 and has many more years of wear ahead. I have and wear two summer night dresses bought from Toast at least 10 years ago.

GillT57 Wed 07-Jul-21 12:51:46

Same here Mawbe, I have some tea shirts from Landsend which are on to their fifth or sixth summer. Initially they are expensive, but there generally is an opportunity to buy at 40% off ( quite often at the moment), the quality is very good. I also have lots of Seasalt, Joules etc which lasts exceptionally well, washes well too. Buy cheap buy twice, even if you can shut your mind off to the true cost of the cheap labour

BlueBelle

Can I just say that I buy off two of these Chinese/ European / US sites because they have really unusual (not high street) clothes that I like
The clothes are not high grade quality but they are very cheap so it doesn’t matter if you only get one season out of them and you look different to M and S wearers They come quite quickly ( 4 days was my last purchase but never longer than a week) they are well pack with a returns label and I haven’t had any trouble from them at all
The ones I have used are Newchic and Airyclothe ( they have a German and French website )
I have bought two tunics a tee shirt type top ( very pretty neck line) and a pair of light Cotten dungarees the two tunics were last summer and are still fine for this year they have washed up well

I think that clothes which only do one (or even two) seasons are far from cheap!
Because summer clothes (some years) don’t necessarily get much wear doesn’t mean they should be cheap and throwaway- that is true extravagance. I buy the likes of Joules/ Seasalt/ White Stuff - they all have regular sales and special offers and I use these whenever I can. A £20 top which I am still wearing and looks good 4 years later because it has kept its shape and colour is much better value than any cheap stuff (made I expect for pennies in some sweat shop too)

lemsip Wed 07-Jul-21 09:27:11

why don't you just google ' floryday reviews' as I did, see for yourself. there are many aswell as this one.

If they are cheap and from anywhere in China or SE Asia, the workers making them, if not forced or slave labour, will undoubtedly be being exploited and be making these clothes in unsafe conditions.

Do not forget the fire and deaths at Rana Plaza.

Elegran Wed 07-Jul-21 09:03:17

"but they are very cheap so it doesn’t matter if you only get one season out of them" but it does matter, because they are probably of man-made material which won't rot for hundreds (thousands?) of years.

When you have had your one season of wearing it, the seams will be going, and it will look too weary for it to be taken to the charity shop for someone else to use it for another year, so it goes into landfill and contributes to the layer of useless debris that returns nothing good to the environment.

If clothes lasted for longer, or if they are fit to be passed on when we want a change, that layer would be smaller and slower to pile up, and if they were made of natural fabrics which would biodegrade, they would rot down to feed the soil.

MerylStreep Wed 07-Jul-21 08:39:21

Gwyneth
A lot of it is made in North Korea.

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 07-Jul-21 08:34:39

And yes Bluebelle, I like to look different from the crowd too!

Humbertbear Wed 07-Jul-21 08:32:56

Annodomini - I bought shoes from GoWalk who popped up on FB and am delighted with them. Very comfortable for walking. I sometimes buy from NewChic who advertise here and everywhere. But you have to be careful what you pick and you can’t return the items.

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 07-Jul-21 08:32:27

Horrifying pictures in the Sunday Times recently of mountains of old clothes from 1st world countries sent to poorer countries for ‘recycling’ and cows grazing on them trying to find something edible. Better to buy one high street item that will last than several cheap ones from these companies. Bluebelle two years isn’t a long time to keep your clothes! I buy very few but choose things that are affordable, not made in China because of its horrendous lack human rights and treatment of animals, won’t date and will last me very much longer than two years! That’s a long list of requirements but by no means impossible to satisfy.

MerylStreep Tue 06-Jul-21 22:35:38

I see that they are selling children’s clothes now. Beware. Note the name for future reference.
