Single or LP?
How much did it cost?
How old were you?
What year was it?

Mine was a 45 of Mark Bolan's 'get it on'. It was 1971 and I was 9 years old. Cost me 50 pence.

From a Jack to a King. Can’t remember who sang it.

Ooh I love "get it on".
It's the ultimate, so cool, pop song, I think.
Or one of them!
I love a good music thread. smile

I bought Adam Faith singing "What do you want if you don't want money?" in 1959 when I was 11. I don't have any idea how much it cost. I also bought his 2nd release "Poor Me"

Mine was Tears of a clown by Smokie Robinson. Just googled the year it was 1967 so I’d be 10 . Can’t remember how much it cost but I know where I bought it. A record stall in our local indoor market where everyone got the records from.

Union city blue by Blondie

The first album I bought was ‘A Meal You Can Shake Hands With In The Dark’ by Pete Brown and the Battered Ornaments. My favourite track was ‘Sandcastle’. I think it was 1969 and I was 16.

Single - Where Do You Go To My Lovely Peter Sarstedt.
I can't remember how much it cost but it was the first record I bought with my own money. I was 12/13 and the year was 1969.

1963 (I think)
Bobby's Girl by Susan Maugham
I think it was 1/6d; more than a week's pocket money.

Shelbel Sat 11-Sept-21 16:34:23

Dannyrae - my friend and I used to dance to 'poor me' and 'running bear' ", not by the same singer. I think they were her mothers records.

The first ones I remember buying were the music for the ballet La Fille Mal Gardée, and highlights from Britten’s opera Peter Grimes, both performances I had seen when I was a student in London.. They were LPs. About 1963. I was in my early twenties. Before that, records were not my priority if I had any money.

The first (and only) pop-type record I bought was the Beatles Penny Lane in the mid-1960s. I was never very interested in pop music, though I liked some songs I heard on the radio - just not enough to buy recordings!

I feel fine by The Beatles, 1964 5s 6d in the NAAFI in Berlin.

Lincslass Sat 11-Sept-21 16:46:27

You’re My World, Cilla Black.

MissAdventure Sat 11-Sept-21 16:50:07

Virginia Plain by Roxy Music.
I think I used a record token to get it, that my decadent, trendy (and very slightly frowned upon) aunt got me.

I'm not sure if that's actually true, but my mind seems to think so.

It was definitely Virginia Plain though. smile

I want to brea free by queen

Neen Sat 11-Sept-21 16:54:21

That meant to say. I want to break free by queen ... I was 16 and wanted to break free by in the world so took a live in job in the Savoy smile

MissAdventure Sat 11-Sept-21 16:57:39

That was brave! smile
Was freedom all you expected it to be?

Grandmabatty Sat 11-Sept-21 16:59:41

Black night by Deep Purple.

MissAdventure Sat 11-Sept-21 17:01:07

Ooh, great tune, that.
Air guitar inducing. smile

I have never bought a single. The first album was Atom Heart Mother by Pink Floyd, I am a huge fan. That was around 1970.

Neatly everyone I've known has a copy of 'Dark side of the moon'.

I was 17, didn`t even have a record player, but I bought the Woolworths cover version of Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini, I think the singer was Paul Rich. I`ve still got the record upstairs, after 61 years. Oh, I had to play it at my friend`s house.
