I so enjoyed the responses to the records question that I began wondering about clothes of our childhood and teenage years. What were your favourite styles and memories associated with them.

Growing up in the late sixties and seventies I remember my first maxi dress. It had a high neck, flowered floaty print - I felt so grown up on it. I was a bit of a tomboy when at home and I remember wearing crimplene type flares to play out in.

Red PVC wet look belted raincoat with a hood from Richards - had this in the mid 70s, when I had just left school, and I SO wish I still had it.

I loved the clothes I has in the late sixties/early seventies. I made all my own clothes. I particularly loved my ankle length skirts with lace edged petticoats under worn with waist length jumpers. I topped these with a full length cape with hood. Have to say they were fun to manage on underground trains and excalators...

trisher

A blue tartan cape which was totally impractical, slits for your arms to come through, worn with long gloves. It meant I could swish dramatically in and out of rooms, like (I imagined) Emma Peel in the Avengers.

,I always Gotha DME downs, but not the cape- she tripped and when she fell her arms were stuck inside it!!! I've never wet myself solo much! She face planted on market Street Manchester right in front of dolcis! Hilarious.shenever wore it again....

I had a white plastic rain cost with matching sou’wester hat and wellies. I thought I was the cats pyjamas. Lol I too was very skinny. Alas I think I’m now almost 5 stones heavier!

Wnen I was 16 I had a fave outfit of all time - an ankle length purple coat with velvet ribbon trim, knee high purple boots and matching tights, a lilac flowery top, huge leather belt and black hotpants. I loved it and still have the coat and belt. These days my favourite piece of clothing is a pair of Nike trainers. Fashion sense has vanished!

I had a gorgeous black boucle coat with a huge fur collar. A black and white Mary Quant mini dress and white patent leather knee boots. I felt like a million dollars in them. In the ‘60’s, tights hadn’t really come in , so we wore stockings and suspenders. It was a work of art bending down in a mini and managing not to show them. My brother said his friends only used to call at our house to see my stocking tops. ?

I, too, had a pair of Gloria Vanderbilt jeans in white. Also put on by lying on the bed and struggling with the zip! (I was a sturdy size 10 though!) Also worn with leather ankle boots, black, six-inch stilettos with gilt metal trim. What DID I think I looked like?! ?

I had a full circle electric blue skirt embellished with all sorts of rock 'n' roll symbols. Great for the dancing. Loved it.

I had some orange corduroy bell bottoms I wore with a nice little crop top, thought it was really cool. I was a size 10 child size then and stayed like that until I had my first baby. Never got back to that size, I have to admit. I also had a very small tartan bikini, I loved that.

Ankle length black velvet coat worn over hot pants and over the knee platform soled boots!!

I had a grey woollen mini skirt that had maroon vertical stripes that were an icnch wide!

I wore it at college and prudently did not take it home with me at Christmas. My parents would have had fits!

I wore the skirt with different blouses that I have no recollection of, and my first pair of high heeled shoes - bought with my own earnings, as was the skirt. The shoes were black with a broad strap across the ankle and the heels were nearly 4 inches high and an inch broad at the base.

I adored those shoes and wore them for about ten years until the insoles and leather inside uppers cracked so badly they hurt my feet.

My mother disapproved heartily of those shoes and a friend of hers told me, "You sound like a horse coming down the street in those heels!"

Later I had a maroon maxi skirt, which I wore with a pale pink shirt blouse - both cost an amount I didn't dare tell my parents, even though I was by then 25 and earning.

In the late 60s a pink tie-die t-shirt from Ibiza worn as a dress (hope it covered my bum!) blush

Like NotSpaghetti the first item of fashion I had for my birthday when I was 13 was a shocking pink mini skirt with a paisley pattern, a pink polo neck jumper and a gold chain belt I wore outside the jumper. All a bit barbie I expect. Later I had an Afghan too which smelt “interesting” especially after rain. I wore platform shoes for so long it shortened my calf muscles. When I spent a day in flat shoes once I was in agony the following day.

Different coloured 'dolly print' mini dresses that I made myself endlessly from the same dress pattern until it fell apart. So cheap to make clothes then! Dress patterns are so expensive now!

I recall a beautiful floaty top with a square neckline and wide sleeves in a pale blue and brown floral print with contrast fabric for a wide band by the neckline and edge of the sleeves. I wore it with jeans and it was so pretty.

When at school we all coveted those 'distressed' denim jackets which had a small red tag by the front pocket. I saw an M&S version a few months ago which was very similar, but I can't remember the price. I don't think I'd want to wear one now though. I'd feel as though I was trying to re-experience my youth - and let's face it, it's gone.

As a teen in the mid seventies I was given a stonewashed blue denim dress. It was midi length with long sleeves, stud cuffs, shirt collar and studs three quarters of the way down the front. I wore it to death, both as a dress and over jeans. Still have it in my wardrobe as I could never bear to part with it - sadly it hasn’t fitted me for some considerable time !!

Rose66 Tue 14-Sept-21 15:25:49

Loved that boho vibe (still do!) I had some fabulous maxi dresses, my two favourites were an off white cheesecloth with panels of wood blocked red flowers, and turqoise cotton that had block print all over. I wore them with mulberry leather italian platform boots!

Pammie1 Tue 14-Sept-21 15:28:15

I also had a gorgeous very seventies maxi dress - mid blue with little ditzy flower pattern. It had a square neckline, puffed sleeves and smocking over the bust. I wore it with blue patent leather platform sling backs which had appliquéd cherries on the toes !! There were two trends I remember at school in the early seventies. One was for blue pvc coats with studs down the front and the other was for crombie coats with a little red hanky in the top pocket - worn with brogue shoes. Anyone remember that ?

Rosina Tue 14-Sept-21 16:23:22

When I was first at work I had four Mary Quant crepe dresses that fitted as if they had been made for me. Also a glamorous black dress from Biba; I would be hard put to say which was my favourite as I loved wearing these clothes. My going away outfit was special too - a white sleeveless dress with a high collar and a black collarless coat with a curved hem.

Another here with south sea bubble loons. Had to order them from an mail order advert in the NME. As no shops near to buy from.

Omasweetie Tue 14-Sept-21 16:29:32

Blue hot pants with white patent pull on boots
And a long blue sheepskin coat over the top.

Fabulous memories !

I was looking through some old photos today and found one of me in the 1960s, wearing: bright pink bell bottoms, purple jumper, orange peaked cap and blue suede shoes. I used old fashioned typewriter ribbons as laces.

leeds22 Tue 14-Sept-21 16:39:41

Pair of red woolen bootcut trousers I bought in Positano. Wore until they were threadbare between my thighs! Then I picked them apart to use as a pattern.

foxie48 Tue 14-Sept-21 16:46:17

I've loved reading these posts.

Favourite dress was a very short "A" line black velvet dress with long sleeves, a white satin collar and cuffs. It looked so demure until you saw how short it was but I did have good legs in those days! White Courreges style boots and my favourite night clubbing outfit was a psychedelic fitted jumpsuit which lit up under strobe lighting, I thought I looked wonderful!
