Gift for mid nineties MIL

Given the success I had with my last gift from gransnetters last Christmas ( the first gift in decades that has not been returned or not used, can I ask your help again?

My MIL would LOVE to watch the gran. I’d like to buy her a little portable dvd player with build in screen so she can watch dvds that doesn’t require her having to change set up on her tv like a normal DVD player would. ( she really wouldn’t be able to cope with that)

Does such a product exist?

I used to be a Home Care Manager and couldn't believe that so many families bought their elderly parents a small screen TV and were then surprised when the parent showed no interest in the programmes that they had watched for years. Trying to tell the family that their parent could not actually see the screen and required a bigger one came as a surprise to them. Many of the elderly cannot see a small screen so please take the size and location of the TV/DVD player into account before deciding which one to buy.

There are also quite a lot on Amazon, bigger screens and battery lasts longer. This one is about the same price when you deduct the discount

This is very interesting. The Bush one can be plugged into the mains indoors and not the cigarette lighter. I’ve just seen several being sold on eBay at very low costs. I’m going to buy one. This is really helpful-thank you.

After The Crown I’d suggest Downton Abbey. She’ll love that.

I have one of the advertised bush ones (see the long link from GrannyWannyFanny above) ?

I’m wondering if I need to see a doctor ?

SpringyChicken according to the product information it comes with both a mains adaptor and a car cable. It’s rechargeable and can play for 2 cordless hours when fully charged.

Excellent. Sorry, I should have checked before posting.

My son’s dvdplayer was from Curry’s. He has learning difficulties but he manages to play all his dvd’s on it.

You can get The Crown on DVD from Amazon - and can probably find the DVD player on there too!

I have one of the advertised bush ones (see the long link from GrannyWannyFanny above), my granddaughter uses it when she stays over, very easy to use and pretty sturdy. I can recommend it.

it definitely exists, I bought one for my dad when he was in hospital in a side room, (terminal cancer), he was so bored, it allowed him to watch westerns and james bond and he passed away a happier man thanks to that DVD player I am sure. One of the last things I remember him laughing about was the Michael Caine quote from the Italian job ""You were only supposed to blow the bl***y doors off." That Argos portable DVD player was the best thing ever. Happy memories dear Dad

How lovely ?

I bought one for myself a while ago from Curry’s. It is compact and easy to use.

Argos website pretty easy to use so good luck ordering the DVD player. I often order things on-line, then go into the store to collect them, which works for me!

Bought my 82 year old neighbour a portable DVD player for Christmas last year.

She lies in bed watching her beloved Andre Rieu dvds and falls asleep to them. She never used to sleep much before.

She’s housebound and had terrible mobility issues, so getting up and down to change a dvd connected to her TV is out of the question for her. It’s not too fiddly either. DVD in, press the play button and done.

She loves it and it was the best present we could have got her.

My mother is over 100 and her tv switches to dvd automatically when a DVD is loaded. I just wish she would get the hang of pausing the DVD when she goes to the loo!

Okay that was a garbled mess - MIL would like to watch The Crown,

And the present I bought last year was from gransnetters advice/suggestions

Ohhh 'The Crown' ????
I was thinking of 'Gran' which is kind of like 'Postman Pat' in how they animated it and I used to watch it with my children. It was very good!

Be careful, the link is for a car DVD player, probably runs off the car battery, plugged into the cigarette lighter socket. Check it runs off mains electricity.

I thought you may have meant Gangsta Granny!

I hope she enjoys watching her DVDs.

DillytheGardener Thu 09-Dec-21 20:06:43

grannynannywanny you have been a tremendous help, thank you ? I’ll let you know how she gets on with it.

annodomini unfortunately she has no internet, so Netflix isn’t possible, we will buy her dvds of the shows/films she enjoys and needs a portable DVD player she could watch and use easily.

annodomini Thu 09-Dec-21 19:46:06

You need to be sure, when you buy this item, that it will be Netflix-enabled so that she can watch The Crown.

Grannynannywanny Thu 09-Dec-21 19:23:19

You’re welcome. I hope it brings your Mum lots of pleasure.

DillytheGardener Thu 09-Dec-21 19:19:56

This is really helpful, thank you, just the thing. The reviews had people buying it the same reason as I am, so it looks like it will be the right thing. Will have to get my measuring tape out now

Grannynannywanny Thu 09-Dec-21 19:03:17

Sorry the link seems to be huge but hopefully it’ll lead you to it on the Argos website and you’ll be able to read the product details and reviews. I don’t have personal experience of it but my grandchildren had one very similar years ago for long car journeys.
