I am really confused about the new advice regarding olive oils, vegetable oils and different fats.

Can anyone explain please?

janeainsworth Fri 28-Jan-22 21:48:31

Kitty I use olive oil and butter exclusively for cooking, spreading and in dressings, because I like the taste.
Oh and sunflower oil in my chip pan because Jamie Oliver recommends it.

Otherwise I ignore all advice, however well intentioned. grin

Rapeseed only for me.

kittylester Fri 28-Jan-22 21:55:45

Me too, but I would be interested in knowing what the recommendations are saying.

What do you bake with?

MerylStreep Fri 28-Jan-22 21:57:23

If it’s a diet issue: keep away from saturated fats.
If it’s the environment: keep away from Palm oil.

I’ve changed from olive to rapeseed oil as it’s produced here. I try and avoid anything containing palm oil for the same reason as Meryl.

What new advice is this? I haven’t heard it.

I was going to ask the same - what new advice is this? When did it come out?

My brother, who has heart problems, has been told not to use any other oils than olive and to cook with hard fats. I mentioned it to my daughter who see.ed very au fait with it.

I use spray olive oil for the majority of my cooking, v occasionally a knob of butter. We didn’t like the taste of rapeseed oil.

The leaflet given to my brother

BlueBelle Fri 28-Jan-22 22:20:05

Virgin olive oil only for years

Shrub Fri 28-Jan-22 22:21:20

I use locally produced rapeseed oil.

That leaflet is confusing - plus it's American and three years old.

lilypollen Fri 28-Jan-22 22:45:53

I use a lot of extra virgin olive oil and reduced fat spreads. When lockdown started, March 2020 I started buying butter (shock, horror) Now make lovely pastry and cakes, a revelation!

kittylester We use rapeseed oil for cooking, olive oil for drizzling, butter for spreading.

Usually I'd use butter for baking but I bake much less now.
Today I did make a couple of banana cakes as the bananas had gone brown and used rapeseed oil instead of butter.
They seem to have turned out OK even though I threw everything in and whizzed it all together. (Usually I measure and weigh.)

Callistemon21 Fri 28-Jan-22 22:56:31

Ps and goose fat very rarely to roast potatoes.

I’ve just looked up the website. She’s selling stuff so not unbiased.

I though ghee, for instance was regarded as a pretty bad fat.

Anyway, to answer the OP, olive oil or rapeseed oil. I rarely fry anything anyway.

OnwardandUpward Fri 28-Jan-22 23:06:40

I just use olive oil because it's more healthy than other oils I think. Butter is lovely, but a treat.

Who told him, kitty?

Dr Cate's ideas seem to be in contrast to recommendations by other experts and nutritionists.

She claims:
Dr. Cate Shanahan is the leading authority on nutrition and human metabolism
Some claim!

In May of 2018, she started working as Director of Metabolic Health for ABC Fine Wine and Spirits, a progressive, family-run company interested in saving money for the betterment of health

So she claims that seed oils cause ill health and inflammation but works for a company which runs liquor supermarkets.

I am surprised to see ghee and lard in the “good” section.

Shandy57 Fri 28-Jan-22 23:55:58

Following my husband's heart problems I always refer to the BHF site.

Here's the link to the page on fats smile

Thanks Shandy57. Very straight forward and helpful.

kittylester Sat 29-Jan-22 08:14:06

Well, now I am totally confused.

My brother was given that leaflet at his post op clinic.

JackyB Sat 29-Jan-22 08:21:24

Thank you Shandy. I learnt quite a bit from that list. Most worrying for me being that whole milk is on the "bad" list. I drink lots of milk, whole and semi-skimmed, but prefer the whole milk.
