That leaflet is confusing - plus it's American and three years old.

I’ve just looked up the website. She’s selling stuff so not unbiased.

I though ghee, for instance was regarded as a pretty bad fat.

Anyway, to answer the OP, olive oil or rapeseed oil. I rarely fry anything anyway.

Ps and goose fat very rarely to roast potatoes.

Me too, but I would be interested in knowing what the recommendations are saying.

What do you bake with?

kittylester We use rapeseed oil for cooking, olive oil for drizzling, butter for spreading.

Usually I'd use butter for baking but I bake much less now.
Today I did make a couple of banana cakes as the bananas had gone brown and used rapeseed oil instead of butter.
They seem to have turned out OK even though I threw everything in and whizzed it all together. (Usually I measure and weigh.)

I use a lot of extra virgin olive oil and reduced fat spreads. When lockdown started, March 2020 I started buying butter (shock, horror) Now make lovely pastry and cakes, a revelation!

I use locally produced rapeseed oil.

The leaflet given to my brother

I use spray olive oil for the majority of my cooking, v occasionally a knob of butter. We didn’t like the taste of rapeseed oil.

My brother, who has heart problems, has been told not to use any other oils than olive and to cook with hard fats. I mentioned it to my daughter who see.ed very au fait with it.

I was going to ask the same - what new advice is this? When did it come out?

SueDonim Fri 28-Jan-22 22:02:58

What new advice is this? I haven’t heard it.

Georgesgran Fri 28-Jan-22 22:01:24

I’ve changed from olive to rapeseed oil as it’s produced here. I try and avoid anything containing palm oil for the same reason as Meryl.

MerylStreep Fri 28-Jan-22 21:57:23

If it’s a diet issue: keep away from saturated fats.
If it’s the environment: keep away from Palm oil.

Rapeseed only for me.

janeainsworth Fri 28-Jan-22 21:48:31

Kitty I use olive oil and butter exclusively for cooking, spreading and in dressings, because I like the taste.
Oh and sunflower oil in my chip pan because Jamie Oliver recommends it.

Otherwise I ignore all advice, however well intentioned. grin

I am really confused about the new advice regarding olive oils, vegetable oils and different fats.

Can anyone explain please?
