Do you suffer from this?Any solutions?

Nonogran Fri 18-Feb-22 10:32:40

Drink more water, eat your greens & more fruit, . Get more exercise. Simple stuff to get the system “going.”
Wind is putrefying “stuff” so the faster it gets through yr system, the better for you & everyone around you!

You can still have this problem while also drinking plenty, eating loads of fruit and veg, and taking reasonable exercise. Can you tell I’m speaking from experience?

OP, you may find that products loaded with billions of gut-friendly bacteria, either the drinks or Acidophilus supplements, may help.

People pass gas quite normally between 10 and 20 times a day but flatulence tends to increase with age. Drinking water helps but eating some greens doesn't - notably broccoli, sprouts, cabbage and of course beans. Dairy can be a problem. Google 'flatulence' for information. It can occasionally be a sign of something else. A friend takes charcoal tablets which I believe absorb some gas.

I find peppermint tea can help.

Quite a few impressive YouTube videos of people - erm, how can I say this - ‘passing wind musically’!! Some of the contributions are quite startling - the ‘Stars and Stripes’ for example !!

Drink a glass of Kefir every day. Healthy gut bacteria! smile

I was a bit concerned about excessive ‘gasiness’ a while ago. My GP sent me for tests because she suspected Diverticulitis - thankfully all came back OK. She said the problem does increase with age, but habits picked up over time also contribute. As previous posters have said, maybe cut out ‘windy’ veg and high fibre foods, and reintroduce them slowly to try to find the cause. Other things I was advised to do included taking peppermint cordial, drinking a small glass of water before meals, and eating and drinking more slowly to avoid taking in air while eating - and not to chew gum as that increases air intake too. My GP also advised that artificial sweeteners can also be to blame as they contain various fruit sugars which can be a culprit. This turned out to be the answer for me as I had cut out sugar and replaced it with hermesetas and canderel when my DP was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.

Forgot to say - Holland and Barrett sell Activated Charcoal capsules. They helped me quite a bit - around £7.50 for a hundred or so capsules.

Some greens actually make things worse. Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cabbage, asparagus, and cauliflower www.healthline.com/health/foods-that-cause-gas

As a lifetime veggie, you get used to thinking about this and it does get worse as you get older. You have to experiment and sadly you perhaps have to avoid certain foods. Onions and garlic especially become indigestible to an older gut. You might find wheat and milk products are a problem, lactose intolerance gets commoner as you get older, lactose free milk is now easily available.

People say try fermented products like kefir and sauerkraut, I don't like them. I have found that a good probiotic makes a difference, try Holland and Barrett.

I've also become addicted to camomile and honey tea!

Hope that helps.

Oh enjoy a good fxxx if you can’t do it at our age when can you

Yammy Fri 18-Feb-22 15:32:24

I always remember Will Carlin who used to captains the England Rugby Union Team describing the officials as 15 old Farts and now I know he was right.
It does amuse the GC as Aveline has said. My SIL is from a diff part of England and says trump very confusing for the children when they were living in the States while Trump was president. My GD is very slow on the up take and got herself in quite a knot.
You can also buy knickers with a charcoal filter never tried them myself. Could be dangerous if you stood too near a bar be que.blush

That explains it then as I’ve just been diagnosed with Diverticular disease, not too bad, but I have to steer clear of Rich fruit cake.

I have a relative who suffers with diverticulitis - she swears by fibogel sachets. They’re granules you mix with water and they turn to a thick juice type drink - orange flavoured etc. She gets them on prescription and says they really help.

It made me laugh when I read the advert, it must be like walking around with Cat litter in your pants and I imagined the noise when you sat down as well as the combustion near the bar be que.

That reminds me, when Apollo 16 astronaut John Young said “I have the farts again” (or something like that), it was broadcast to the entire world ?
