To tip or not to tip -

Well, that is the question isn't it?
My hairdresser comes to the house and is self employed, I don't tip her. But every 6 weeks or so I get my eyelashes and brows tinted (otherwise they're invisible) at a salon in town - and she is also self employed, in partnership with another girl - and I do tip her.
What exactly is the etiquette here - who should I tip and how much?
I find the question of tipping quite embarrassing.

Oh I should add, I might tip a waiter if the service was exceptional.

I tip my hairdresser £10 and he puts it into he staff pot and I know it gets distributed…

I would tip in a restaurant, pub, hairdresser and the taxi driver.
They used to be on lower wages, but now it’s minimum wage, so a lot of people stopped.

I love my hairdresser. She charges me very reasonable rates so I always add a fiver on. I hate tipping generally. A fair price for a fair job. That way we all know where we stand!

I probably would my hairdresser, but never have any cash. Since Covid do everything by card.

Always tipped my hairdresser even when I graduated to the owner but now I have a hairdresser the house and also cuts my husband’s hair. I have tried to tip her but she sa
Us, “Your Simon’s mum” and will not accept a tip so I give her a big tip at Christmas and say it’s for her children. I do tip in restaurants, taxi drivers etc as well

I've had a home hairdresser for 15 years. Normally don't tip but she comes early afternoon and I know she has just finished her other job of fitness instructor so I always give her lunch( her standard favourite of egg mayonnaise roll). At Christmas I do give her a substantial present.

GreyKnitter Sat 05-Mar-22 13:28:42

I always tip my hairdresser - usually£5 for £35 wash, cut, blow dry. I don’t give her an extra Christmas tip because she’s not that great! But the best I could get locally after covid. My beautician - massage, some waxing and the occasional nails - is really like a friend. I always tip her generously and give her a separate Christmas gift. Not embarrassing - just rewarding good service. I generally tip in cafes, restaurants etc unless I’ve been dissatisfied with the service. Then it’s nothing!

I used to for years but have stopped now since getting a new hairdresser. Expensive enough. I do buy gifts at Christmas though because she is a nice person

GreyKnitter Sat 05-Mar-22 13:34:04

PS. I’ve also taken a gift to the local GP surgery this year - once after my GP had been extremely helpful and kind and then something for the whole surgery at Christmas time. They’ve had a whole lot of abuse this year and, in my opinion, continue to do a great job. Saying thank you is important. We also took gifts to the lovely emergency team at the vets who sadly had to put our lovely cat to sleep on Christmas Day. The cost in money was high, but their kindness and compassion were priceless.

I don't tip tradesmen like plumbers, etc., as they charge enough already but we do tip our cleaners and also regular delivery drivers at Xmas as well as in restaurants if satisfied (having checked the bill).

I don’t tip but I do take biscuits/ cake for my hairdresser- she’s gluten allergic - and arrange a hamper at Christmas, I know she shares with colleagues which is fine as they are a super team

JuBut Sat 05-Mar-22 13:57:10

I always tip my hairdresser, he cuts my hair at home

DutchDoll Sat 05-Mar-22 14:02:12

No, never.

Nannashirlz Sat 05-Mar-22 14:11:38

No I don’t tip anymore and I’ve never noticed anyone tipping when I get my hair done. But I did when I paid cash but now I pay by cashless I don’t. But my hairdresser as put her prices 3 times since end of covid and she’s doing again end of month but I do give a box of chocolates at Christmas. Who can afford to tip anyone nowadays

GrammaH Sat 05-Mar-22 14:11:48

No, I've never tipped my hairdresser. I've been going to the salon for many years during which time the owners have become tv stars. They pay their staff well and charge top prices in our county town , I don't think they need any more of my money, especially since my hairdresser left suddenly & they didn't notify me, just let me turn up for my next appointment to be greeted with the bad news. I was then told my excellent girl had left but never mind, someone else would do it!

I tip my hairdresser £10. The bill is usually around £100, but I don’t tip when my eyebrows done because it only takes about 10 minutes. . I do buy her a decent gift at Christmas though. I don’t find it embarrassing as it’s all done very discreetly.

nadateturbe Sat 05-Mar-22 14:37:28

£100. Good gracious!

Nicksmrs46 Sat 05-Mar-22 14:59:35

I’ve had the same home hairdresser for 17 years , she has never put her prices up , £12 for cut and blow dry, which I have done every5 weeks and £20 for highlights which I have done every 3 months . She has started doing a dry cut for Mr Nick which is £8 . We give her £25 for both cuts and £35 for Mr N and myself when I have highlights.

I have a wonderful hairdresser who comes to the house. She charges very reasonably and I give her a tip of over 10% on top.

She first cut my hair in a salon. When she went self-employed I stopped tipping her, as I had heard you didn’t tip people with their own business, but she thought I was unhappy with the haircuts and asked me if anything was wrong. She said people did still tip her. I was very happy to do that.

Oh I thought this was going to be a thread about getting rid of rubbish at the tip.

We last tipped the two chaps who delivered our two new sofas - and who carted way the very heavy old ones! They were reluctant to take it, but eventually did.
I haven’t tipped the hairdresser for a while, paying by card and not carrying cash any more.
However, we always buy two nice large tins of biscuits which we take down to the GP’s practice just before Christmas, with a thank you card and making clear that it’s for all the staff who work there. And yes, my husband is a retired GP!

I was a hairdresser way back in the 1960s to 90s, & in those days we relied on tips as our wages were very low, (I started at the equivalent of £1 50p a week), but it all depends on the basic salary which I don't know nowadays, if with a personal service, you are happy with the result, then I think a tip is expected.
I do my own hair so I have not any comments to add, but I get my nails coloured at a nailbar, & always tip the girl.

songstress60 Sat 05-Mar-22 16:21:02

I tip hairdressers but I no longer tip waiters as it goes into a pot and the management take a cut out of that. I don't tip binmen in fact I am sick of them knocking on my door at Christmas and wishing me Merry Christmas because they are only doing it in order to obtain a tip! I pay enough council tax so I am damned if I will tip binmen.
