Grandma70s - I can't believe that you felt you had to post all that negativity on a thread so full of joy and happiness. Why?
"Read the room!" ......... We really don't care!!
And, believe me, It definitely is HISTORY - just look at how the 1966 World Cup is still talked about. That makes it HISTORY.

And then Gary Lineker posts this ? couldn’t he just have congratulated the team on their wonderful win without a truly asinine attempt at a joke?

Awful. And the comments after

Grandma70s it is history! It is a an event of national and international importance.

I’m not usually a football fan but I was enthralled by the England team, if you don’t care for sports just flip over the channel, it’s not like we are are in the old days with a tiny selection of channels to watch.

Mr Lineker just cannot help himself, perhaps there is an element of jealousy on his part?

NannyJan53 Mon 01-Aug-22 07:48:41

There is always one to put a damper on things isn't there.

I was truly enthralled to. After years of girls and women being told we cannot play football, it IS history in the making.

Lucca Mon 01-Aug-22 07:52:59

How anyone can say it is just football is beyond me. It is history..sporting history, womens rights history

Sara1954 Mon 01-Aug-22 08:00:06

Well I can’t pretend to know anything about football, and can’t remember ever being remotely interested in a game.
But, yes this was history in the making, I told my granddaughter, when she’s my age, they’ll still be showing that winning goal.
Excellent role models, lovely girls, so pleased for them.

What did Lineker say please?

Same here Sara1954 well done those women.

I didn't find Lineker's tweet offensive, in fact thought it funny and affectionate!

I think it’s the replies that were the problem.

Women are more than just bra wearers

Septimia Mon 01-Aug-22 09:13:43

It was interesting to hear the comments on the Commonwealth Games programme. The "pundits" were all swimmers, but with an interest in football.

They considered that the women play a better game than the men - less stoppage time and a better-behaved crowd (bigger, too!). I think the women's game is better, too; they play as a team not as individuals looking for glory.

The men are just jealous!

I didn't see the replies.

The bra quip was appropriate as Chloe Kelly did tear off her shirt and show her sports bra in celebration!

I saw that Riverwalk

JenniferEccles Mon 01-Aug-22 09:17:23

Nobody could be more uninterested in football than me but even I got completely caught up in the match last night, and even felt a little tearful at the end. A wonderful achievement!

Of COURSE it’s an historic moment for women’s sport and some much needed glory for our country.
How can anyone think differently?

GG13 I loved the “we’ll get it ourselves” comment so thanks for sharing that!

Iam64 Mon 01-Aug-22 09:52:31

Lineker should have known better than comment like that. The misogynistic sexist offensive comments thst followed were so predictable

25Avalon Mon 01-Aug-22 10:00:01

I was surprised Chloe wasn’t booked. Men footballers get booked if they remove their shirts to celebrate during a game.

Woman’s World Cup here we come.

Rosie51 Mon 01-Aug-22 10:05:37

She was booked.

joannapiano Mon 01-Aug-22 10:08:32

I asked my grand daughter if the crowd were all well-behaved at Wembley last night. She said they were, but a chap about 55,there with his son and grandson, was yelling racist and sexist remarks at the start. Then a woman sitting near shouted “Shut up you horrible man” at the top of her voice, and the Stewards escorted them out. Her and her little sister had a wonderful time. The programs and ice creams were v expensive, though!

25Avalon Mon 01-Aug-22 10:40:15

Rosie51

She was booked.

I did wonder but I was serving behind the bar at our local football club for our ladies team who were watching on our giant tv screen. Pulling a pint is like going to the toilet - you usually miss a goal or something in the process?

Rosie51 Mon 01-Aug-22 10:54:38

25Avalon we didn't actually see her get the yellow card. The commentators said she got the mandatory yellow while I was checking online because I thought she'd maybe got away with it smile

Fennel Mon 01-Aug-22 11:37:32

I just knew the men were going to be jealous. When did they last win a big competition?
I nearly bashed husband today only he's bigger than me. He said here we are with covid and financial problems global warming etc and all people are interested is football!
It's good news for once grin

grumppa Mon 01-Aug-22 12:29:49

I am not remotely jealous, Fennel. Nor was the male former professional footballer I was with earlier in the day. It was an exciting and memorable, and historic, sporting occasion.
