Glory hole - do you have one? Where is it? ~What's in it?

My Grandad used to call the cupboard under the stairs The Glory Hole and I had no idea it meant anything but. Had to look it up, think I have lead a sheltered life but glad I have!

If anyone wants to know what a glory hole is . PM me and I will explain.

Just a little word to the wise, PollyDolly - I believe glory hole has another meaning these days as I found to my cost when I referred to the state of my glory hole whilst having coffee with some young colleagues. The silence was deafening, followed by shrieks of laughter!

However, mine is the cupboard under the stairs. It houses the vacuum cleaner, gas meter, assorted shopping bags, light bulbs, vases & ornaments and stuff that I don't really use but "might come in one day" and dozens of books I'm "getting around to". But.... all that is about to change! I'm going to clear it all out and have a small under counter freezer put in there before winter sets in. I just need to make a start on clearing it all out.....

Well, that certainly put me in my place! Perhaps I won't bother again.

Just Googled it - it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.

We have 2 understairs cupboards. One is where we store beer, wine etc and the rechargeable vacuum.

The bigger one has Dh's tool box and stuff like glue, WD40 type things,va stock of candles, spare bulbs, vases, plant pot holders, the big heavy hoover, ironing board, feather duster, extendable cobweb cleaners, stock of Reed diffusers, stairgate, shopping bags.

There were 2 staircases but I lent one to the vicars wife ore covid and she hasn't given it back.

What did the vicar's wife do with a borrowed staircase, Kitty?

Flipping heck - I changed that twice to Stair gate!!

I laughed out loud when ai looked that up! Reminded me of when I referred to someone or something being a growler and my sister telling me not to use that word as it wasn’t what I thought……..

Our garage is the receptacle for all things that we do not need/use but according to DH we might do one day

I do wonder when we shall need the following bodyboard’s, surfboards, wet suits which do not fit, old model skis (some older than our AC), car seats for cars we no longer have, computer games for computers we no longer have you get the picture …

I used to be involved with Girl Guides and when we ran camps, we would choose a theme. Once I decided on insect theme with patrols called butterfly, beetle etc and called the camp "The Buggery". No-one made any comment and it was only later someone enlightened me! More innocent times.

Our cellar is a bit of a glory hole but every time I go down there I try to bring up something that can be got rid of. Most recently I was down there with the grandsons – even I have to watch I don't bump my head so my very tall twelve year old grandson practically had to bend over double. We brought up the family tent for the GS's family to take back to Derbyshire with them. They've had it before but DD3 borrowed it from them and left it with us again.

Found some mouldy cardboard boxes to get rid of and also gave DD1 family some kids' paints that have been down there for yonks. GS2 is fond of, and very good at, drawing and painting.

MrB's ancient diving kit is down there still, much of that going slowly mouldy too, but he finds it very difficult to ditch stuff that he hasn't used for decades ?.

We have drunk all the home-made wine that was stored down there and I freecycled two of the large wine racks to someone who was going to use them to store rolled up towels. The third one is being used as part of a frame for a climbing rose on our front porch.

Can't say I have one having thought about it and haven't heard that expression since my maternal gran died, so thanks for starting this thread Polly as it's always good to be reminded of the things she used to say.

You need to look at the Urban Dictionary for the definition of some of these terms that we all used innocently for years!

I caused silence, followed by howls of laughter when I excused myself from a group. ‘Sorry, got to go, I’m going dogging’. Yep, I was meeting other friends to dog walk.

Our glory hole, the cupboard under the stairs, is currently pristine. We had to clear it out so the electrician could work in there to fit the charger for my new hybrid.

I must admit, i only knew the modern meaning but as soon as I read the OP, I realised it wasn't that lol

We don't have useable loft space so every cupboard is jammed with nonsense and the shed is terrifying

new builds no longer have a glory hole and s*d the new meaning, they were called glory holes in the old days, cupboards under the stairs

Many new builds have underfloor heating and the manifold is normally in a cupbard with scant room for a few coats. They all have a downstairs cloakroom. It isn`t bad tbh, encourages recycling to charity shops, rather than accumulating. It was hard at first but I have learnt to live with the concept

When I was a child our church had a walk in cupboard that stored everything from brooms to pencils. It was always referred to as the glory hole.
The thread on Sundays just brought that back to mind.
