There are a couple of things about this forum I can't get my head round. I think I need a dictionary.

1) How do you put quotations from other posters into that little grey box?

2) How do I sort out those abbreviations? SIL, DS, etc.

Greciangirl, are you using the App to access Gransnet or the browser (probably Safari) on your iPad?

There's an app?

Sorry, my mistake. I assumed that as Mumsnet had one, then Gransnet would have followed suit...like most social media forums! Apparently, not.

To quote - click on the three little maroon squares at the bottom right of the post that you want to quote.
Click quote.
You can do other stuff from there too

I’ve been wondering about this as well. Hope I’ve done it right. Thanks for the option of practicing

Ethelwashere1 to start a new thread, select the topic above the title of a thread - on this thread it is "Ask a Gran", but each thread has a general topic above it. There you will find "Start a new discussion", which is fine if your new thread is on the same subject.

If it isn't, you can see a list of all the topics and the threads already under that topic if you select "Forums" near the top of the page. choosing a topic lets you start a new thread/discussion on that topic.

Ethelwashere1 Thu 15-Sept-22 17:50:20

It’s very complicated. I’ve been on here 8 years plus. I can’t even find the ‘start a new thread’ box or whatever it’s called so I can’t put on a new thread. Maybe I’m just reaching dinosaurs age group.

I’m getting it all wrong I’m sure. Is it considered rude to quote someone’s comment ?
Only on another fb group a lady has a go at someone replying to her comment as she’d quoted her. She seemed to take offence at the quoting. ??‍♀️
Sometimes I feel like I’m too old and just get everything wrong these days ?

This site isn’t the same as FB. You can quote from the thread your on. It’s not acceptable to quote from another thread.

How do I do that on an iPad please?

Not if you are specifically responding to it, Secretsquirrell. Just as in real life, there are some funny people around who will easily take offence where none is intended! Quote away!

Thanks Farmor15, was desperately searching for maroon dots, mind you no idea how I could have missed 'quote' on the top line!

Elegran Thu 15-Sept-22 12:21:43

If you are adding a comment, and look below the comment text-box (underneath the "Preview" and Post" rectangles) there are brief instructions on how to make text bold or underline or italics or strikethrough plus how to do links, and a list of useful smileys. It may be different on an Ipad or a tablet.

Thank you I did not know how to do this either, I do now, so thank you

Theoddbird Thu 15-Sept-22 11:53:06

I don't use any of the abbreviations. They annoy me. I think proper words should be used.

icanhandthemback Thu 15-Sept-22 11:29:38

Can I just say that if you are using ^ at the beginning and end of a quote, you need to add ^ to each end of every paragraph otherwise it doesn't work properly.

FannyCornforth Thu 15-Sept-22 11:23:14

Of course you can Rutherglen!
If you don’t know how to start a new thread, post it here and one of us will ask HQ to move it.
I’m sure that Marydoll especially would like to hear your memories smile
