Why can’t I find…?

Why can’t I find the sort of nightdress I want?
For winter, long sleeves, plain , long length so it doesn't ride up over my knees, half way round my back?
The only ones I can find are voluminous, brushed cotton with lots of gathers and a lace trim, not my style at all.
Jersey cotton preferred but I don’t mind a bit of a mixture as long as it is soft and comfortable.
I did find one, but it was £69.

On Amazon search ladies jersey nightdresses there are loads some quite a good price, a lovely pale grey almost floor length is lovely and I don’t even wear nighties.

Yup. I'd like that too. I found one like it for my mum 25 years ago from JC Penny in the USA. Never seen one again.

I've long since accepted manufacturers want us to buy what they think is right, not what we want.

I wear these every winter.

The normal, non-sale price may seem high but I have had some of mine for at least 15 years and they're still going strong.
I tend to wear nothing at all in summer but I have some of the short sleeve version for spring and autumn.
Lands End sizes tend to be quite generous but, as a dress size 14, I find the M size fits comfortably without being voluminous.

Thanks for replies.
I have one from Lands End, about 3 years old, with short sleeves. I love it. Just what I want only with long sleeves.
Reviews on their site suggest that a different fabric is now being used which is not as good. Have you bought one recently, Concordia?

FannyCornforth Sun 09-Oct-22 09:49:22

How about this? £18.
I’ve got the short sleeved versions and the broiderie anglaise isn’t lacy in an itchy way. You don’t notice it
I have been browsing at M&S and found this: www.marksandspencer.com/pure-cotton-broderie-long-nightdress/p/clp60567203?intid=mobile_app_pdp_share

It was always a nightmare finding nighties for our mother, but she wanted something very different. She didn't want any jersey material, just a light shift with straps (no sleeves) in lawn cotton or Batiste. We never did find one. She mainly wore the only one she had that fitted the bill until it was thin at the edges and even had a couple of holes in.

I can't find nighties that suit my requirements either. Why do manufacturers never listen to the consumers?

Try Slenderella

Cotton Traders have a pack of two long jersey nighties for £35 -just seen an advert on Facebook.

Jaxjacky Sun 09-Oct-22 12:00:56

Damart have some.

Philippa111 Sun 09-Oct-22 12:09:23

Me too. Its a nightmare! I don't like wearing anything in bed but with the colder weather it's going to be necessary. I got a couple of great nighties at M&S which was a smooth woven viscose with stretch jersey short sleeves for when I went to hospital. My friend borrowed one and I never got it back... she lives abroad! So I'm left with one. I've tried others but they are just not comfortable at all. I'm hyper sensitive to lace and the stitching on the seams which makes the task impossible! Not sure what to do next!

I have just ordered one of the Landsend nightdresses. 100% cotton, reduced to £20 and free postage!

I have two Landsend Pima cotton nighties and have had them in the past, They are good for winter and between-season wear but in the hottest nights this summer I had to discard them and resort to a tee shirt. The Pima cotton is very closely woven (or knitted?) and doesn't let the skin breathe. I wear a knee-length nightie as I can't bear the long ones that tie my ankles together. To be honest, I like the M&S short cotton ones just as much but when I last looked, I couldn't find any without some kind of silly motif. I have also found Bon Marché cotton nighties to be comfortable and good value.

Hi, Cabbie21. My most recent purchase must have been around 18 months to 2 years ago. I bought a long and a short sleeve one and my only observation was, and remains, that the fabric has a much softer "handle" to it than some of the earlier ones. It seems to wash and wear well, just as before - but newer iterations might have deteriorated in quality, as have their jeans and tee shirts.

Patra do several.

Sleepyamber Tue 11-Oct-22 12:42:10

Matalan usually sell them

Why can’t I find shoes in half sizes `below a £100. I don’t want a 5 - too small. A 6 is too big and no, I don’t want to stuff the toes!

Rosina Tue 11-Oct-22 12:58:07

M and S are doing a twin pack of nighties - short sleeves, but they are pure cotton and very comfortable. I also bought the 'animal print' twin pack; one is cotton and the patterend one, inexplicably, is 40% polyester. To be avoided.

Coco51 Tue 11-Oct-22 13:02:08

Alex Rose have men’s traditional nightshirts - Flannelette and cotton. Very hardwearing and comfortable.

seadragon Tue 11-Oct-22 13:03:37

When will someone make nighties (shoe string straps and full length for me) with some support for one's bosoms? Just some stretchy lace would do. Looks like I'll have to restart to DIY..as I've been meaning to for the last couple of decades.... Will check Mumsnet again first as someone there was going to produce them ages ago....

Kamiso Tue 11-Oct-22 13:10:23

I have David Neiper night dresses mainly, usually for birthday or Christmas presents as they are quite pricey but well worth it to me. I like them at least mid calf length or ankle length so they don’t ride up and get tangled. I prefer jersey cotton with a little bit of give in the fabric.

A lot depends on how hot or cold you find the nights, bedroom temperature, overnight heating etc.

Cabbie21 Tue 11-Oct-22 13:15:51

Thanks for all the suggestion re nightdresses.

Pollyj, re shoes. I am the same. 6 is too big and 5 a bit tight.
Hotter do half sizes. Pavers do Wide fit, which I find are usually just right, depending on the shape.
If you have a Boundary Mills outlet nearby ( other outlets too) they have great prices on these makes.
