Does anyone else find that in the cooler weather jeans are just not warm enough? Am I just not buying the right ones? Any suggestions welcome. I do need short length no longer than 27" inside leg.

I wear thermal long johns or thin leggings under jeans and that does the trick.

Joy241 Fri 14-Oct-22 14:59:47

I wear warm tights or leggings under mine.

I wear cords in the colder weather , not got them out yet

I'm another who wears thin tights under jeans. I add socks when it gets colder. At present I'm not even needing the tights. Yesterday was such a lovely autumn day that I sat in the sun drinking a cup of tea.

Lands End jeans seem to be of a much better quality denim, thicker but of curse more expensive.

John Lewis thermals under my jeans in cold weather.

Demin is not a good fabric, it's hot in summer and cold in winter.

But it’s always cool ?

I wear cords in the winter

I am another who wears thick tights under jeans in winter.

The problem is that jeans are made from denim. They are not jeans if they aren't. Denim is not a warm facbric.

I do a lot of dog walking and find jeans are hardy when tramping through bushes and undergrowth.
But they are cold and horribly so if they get wet. I wear leggings underneath.

I've just bought some nice cords from Cotton Traders which are warmer than jeans

Every winter there are many reports of the Mountain Rescue teams being called out to walkers in difficulties in bad weather. some of climbers on sheer cliff faces, but the majority are hill walking in rugged terrain, and have been overtaken by unexpected storms and are soaked through and chilled. Very often they turn out to be wearing jeans and sneakers. Once these get wet through they take a long time to dry, and in windy conditions they draw heat away from the wearer so that they risk hypothermia.

Good winter wear is closely woven, windproof and shedding much of the water that falls on it. If it does get wet through it dries quickly from body heat.

Jeans fabric absorbs water and holds onto it (think how long jeans take to dry when washed) and they are not wind-proof. In dry still weather, they are fine, but avoid wearing them in wind and rain.

Should say "Some of them are climbers . . . "

I have a pair of jeans that is a size too big - just so that I can get my nice thick leggings on underneath them.

I wear cords and washed velvet jeans in winter, also lined wax jeans for wet and windy days. Cotton jeans and jeggings already packed away. ?

Lucca Fri 14-Oct-22 16:57:50

But surely you are not all striding through rough terrain or hill walking every day when clearly you’d wear the appropriate clothing ?

But for everyday outings I think jeans are fine as I can’t bear all the layers at my waist with knickers tights jeans ! I never wear tights under trousers, I’d just choose some warmer trousers !

Farmor15 Fri 14-Oct-22 17:02:44

Cords for me too M&S and Cotton Traders. Jeans are OK for in-between weather.

MiniMoon Fri 14-Oct-22 17:12:51

M&S sell fleece lined tights. They are lovely and warn under jeans. My DD and I buy them every winter.

So many people DON'T wear appropriate clothing to walk on hills in Scotland or the Peak District, or take a map with them, which they know to use. Volunteer Mountain Rescue teams risk their own lives searching in the dark, in terrible weather and on treacherous surfaces, for inexperienced people who are not equipped for their expedition. The more often it is said that jeans and trainers are not the best wear in those circumstances, the better.

Spot on Elegran. Denim jeans are tough and protective but hold water and are really bad for insulation during hot or cold weather. I also think they are rather uncomfortable to be honest. In fashion terms they are timeless, and that will never change.

Joseanne Fri 14-Oct-22 18:40:58

The thing with jeans is that they are such timeless and universal items of clothing. So I can be wearing them while out in the woods or on the moors one minute, then when I drop down to the beach the next, followed by a stop off for coffee and cake on the sofas in a café. What other leg wear is as versatile and practical?

Norah Fri 14-Oct-22 18:47:23

In chilly weather I wear fleece lined jeans.

Kim19 Fri 14-Oct-22 18:49:27

Woolly tights and or thermal leggings solve the problem for me every time.
