Rosacea

Suddenly developed rosacea… horrible red little spots on side of nose and two big red sore spots on my chin! I thought at 73 my days of this were over! I have little white spots under my skin and they seem to have become inflamed. Anyone had the same? Any tips or advice gratefully received!

No experience of this but didn't want to ignore your post Glenfinnan. Might it be an idea to see your local pharmacist who may be able to recommend something.

I hope you're able to get some effective treatment.

Have you been diagnosed with Rosacea? The usual treatment is antibiotics - tablets and/or gel. I'm 64 but was diagnosed about 32 years ago (my face has been clear and smooth for many years, although I flush easily)

Jaxjacky Thu 18-May-23 10:07:38

I had it diagnosed in by 20’s, as HowVeryDare says antibiotics may be offered, I didn’t want long term use of them, so refused.
Most of the time it’s not too bad, I use Simple face cream if my skin is dry, there are lots of products advertised, La Roche Posay are one supplier. As I never wear make up I’m not going to start now, the flushing is annoying, but passes.
I’m not much help really as I just put up with it, sorry.

Glenfinnan- I have just read something in today’s Daily Mail , about a cream to treat Rosacea in the Daily Mail - check it out.

Thank you all … just off to buy the daily Mail crazyH. Many thanks

Glenfinan - saw it in DailyMail online

Glenfinnan Just to add - I use a colour-corrective cream (green) under my foundation, and I use La Roche Posay cleansing wash, CeraVe moisturiser. I try to avoid being out in strong winds or hot sun (I use cosmetics with a good SPF). All of the foods that cause flare-ups are foods I love, so I limit them - spicy things like curries, tomatoes, anything with ginger, onions, as well as alcohol.

When mine flared first I was advised to buy Avene products (not Aveeno). I find they cool and take a lot of the aggravation away. The cream is slightly green and on days when water makes my face burn painfully as well as redden the no wash off cleanser can be a life saver. Boots sell them and sometimes I buy direct from France. So much cheaper there. Head for a chemist if visiting, family know now, I don’t have to ask.

I have some prescribe cream for emergencies, use it very sparingly. It’s flaring now, I’m stressed the two go together. It’s a horrid condition, of course we all think other folk are observing critically. In reality they aren’t, people tend not to notice. Do get a proper diagnosis glenfinnan, other conditions can mimic rosacea.

I’m prescribed Finacea gel, which really helps. It’s not an otc treatment, so you’d need to see your doctor. Hope you find something that helps you.

You can get this from Boots.

Something else very good at covering redness is a green mineral correcting powder from Lilylolo (available online). I have used it for years, after moisturising and before applying foundation. I can really recommend it. It is a bit expensive but lasts a long time and is easy to apply with a brush. Hope this helps!

This may sound weird but my doc told me to take antihistamines and it works Currently taking Cetirizine Dihydrochloride, which is on repeat prescription for me.

Oxytetracycline. After clearing the outburst I take one a day & it keeps it away. Tried stopping after a couple of clear years, but back it came!

I suffered with this for about 10 years not knowing what it was. Only when seeing a dermatologist about frontal hair loss was it spotted. The hair loss treatment required antibiotics to go with it and this also cleared the rosacea. Medication for hair loss changed 8 months ago not requiring antibiotics to go along with it. Rosacea flared up two months ago. Given a 3 month course of antibiotics again. Was offered a cream but as the tablets had worked stuck with them. The little white spots under skin go hand in hand with tendency for rosacea.

Thank you all again! Food for thought here… I’ll try anything!

I’m a recent convert to Tropic for my daily skin care and when I recommended it to a friend she said that her husband uses their rosacea cream. I don’t know the product name, or if it’s specifically formulated for rosacea, but he swears by it! I’m sure Google can identify it.

I’m a former rosacea victim. I came down with it in my 40’s, the classic T-zone on my face.

At first you think your skin is so dry so you might apply more moisturizer - in fact you’re only making it worse. I went the route of green coverup/concealers… worse yet!

Rosacea tends to attack more oily complexions. Through trial and error I discovered that by changing my facial moisturizer to a Sensitive Skin, or Oily Skin, or Hypoallergenic formula, staying with a Lotion, Not a Cream you may eradicate it without prescriptions or meds.

That’s how I got rid of mine, trial and error. It took a while and a few $, but I did not seek treatment. If your’s is severe, then you should. I’ve had clear skin ever since. I use Neutrogena Sensitive Skin Lotion.
Good luck!

My daughter-in-law swears by Tropic, and gave me a set of products for my recent birthday, which do feel nice. She uses their Tamanu balm, which she says has hugely improved her rosacea.

A friend of mines daughter had laser treatment and was over joyed with the results, she had to go quite a few times,I hope that helps.

I’ve had Rosacea since my mid twenties. Now in mid sixties. I have tried everything under the sun. However it is mostly under control for a long time now. I have a facial monthly and use the same products religiously. Cleanser, moisturiser - factor 50 and night cream. Best to see your GP and get a dermatologist referral.Stress plays a big factor and my Crohn’s and Rosacea seem to flare at sane times. Take care.

Mom3 Sun 21-May-23 18:25:21

I was made miserable with Rosacea for at least 30 years. Antibiotics didn't help that much. About two years ago a dermatologist prescribed Permethran ointment and it worked 100%. It gets rid of skin mites on my face. I don't know why other dermatologists didn't prescribe it years ago.

The Blossoms Clinic near me (it’s a beautiful salon plus has a nurse prescriber who also does various treatments including one for rosacea). I think there are several branches over the UK but if not there will be something similar wherever you are. Best wishes.

Never had a teenage spot, now my cheeks and forehead are embarrassingly bright red, but I’ve found a really good cover up. It’s a green cream that I press over all the red bits on my face, then tap the cream into my skin with a brush. If any red bits still show I just dab with a little more cream. Follow with usual foundation. Like all make up practise until you are happy with the result. Good luck.
