How old is your microwave oven?

This morning my inexpensive free-standing Sharp microwave conked out - I was heating milk for my latte and heard a strange sound and burning smell and phut!

So after 20 years light service it's off to landfill. I didn't use it to cook, just to heat milk and re-heat batch cooked meals.

I'm about to pay around £99 for a new one.

One day old. I've treated myself to a Microwave + Àir Fryer combo.

So far I've set the clock.....🌼

Oh, do tell Ailidh, I didn't know there was such a combo.

What make is it?

Witzend Thu 22-Jun-23 15:34:29

Well over 30 years - it’s a built in combi - oven and microwave together - it does 2 big jacket potatoes with crispy skins in 14 minutes.
I dread it packing up - as far as I can tell, new ones are a lot bigger - and a lot more complicated!* and wouldn’t fit in the unit - and I don’t have space elsewhere.
*mine has only 2 functions - cook and defrost, and it’s fine.

It’ll probably mean a whole new kitchen - but that’s well over 30 years old, too.

It's a Samsung.

I googled microwave/air fryer combo, because I didn't believe it could exist. Seems like it does!

Other models are available - tho not that many yet, it 's mes a New Thing. 🌼

*mes is a weird interjection from my keyboard.....

14 years. Built-in Panasonic microwave - heavily used. Still going strong but looks a bit ‘mottled’ inside - I think that’s how it always was, or was it ? It’s strange how we just use these things and never notice the details

We bought a microwave/grill when the kitchen was refurbished, so early 2021.

annodomini Thu 22-Jun-23 15:48:43

Brand new in fully refurbished kitchen and I'm trying very hard to understand the instruction sheet!

denbylover Thu 22-Jun-23 16:27:10

We’ve got a Panasonic, it has to be close to 25 yrs old. When it’s finished its instruction, it says ‘enjoy your meal’. Our daughter always said we must have a flash one, as hers just says ‘done’!

toscalily Thu 22-Jun-23 17:16:00

Mine is about 9 years old but doesn't say anything.

Beechnut Thu 22-Jun-23 17:16:47

Ancient! I’ve had mine since 1999 and my dad had it for 9 years before me.

toscalily Thu 22-Jun-23 17:16:49

It's a Panasonic

Er, now that you've set the clock... could you just cook a few things and report back! grin

Seven years old. We bought a new one when we moved. The previous enormous one was 19. Months

Redhead56 Thu 22-Jun-23 17:44:07

About 3 years old not a fan of them myself but DH likes them.

Grammaretto Thu 22-Jun-23 17:45:35

Mines not very old. I bought it on Gumtree . It had belonged to a young man who had died of kidney failure and the money went to Kidney research.

I bought my Sharp microwave in 1984 loved it at first but then not so much just used it for defrosting and heating up beans etc. it finally gave up 23 years later. We bought another Sharp but when we moved house, there was nowhere to put it, so gave it away.
Haven’t had one since, and not missed it either.

kittylester Thu 22-Jun-23 18:43:24

Mine is 5 months old. It broke and I wish I hadn't panicked and bought an all singing, all dancing one and kept the 20 year old one for cooking peas.

This is mine. It's very simple to use and now I'm on my own it's really handy to heat things or bake a single potato

Our microwave is a dinosaur – we've had it 25 years and it was already old – but it's still brilliant.

Grandmafrench Thu 22-Jun-23 19:12:55

toscalily 🤣. Ours is 2 years old - a Whirlpool microwave/defrost/oven which never stops giving me instructions. It just barked ‘vegetables finished, open the door!’ A tad demanding. It had to fit the space of a previous one which means, as it’s a bit high, I have to find my glasses sometimes to read its commands. A couple of weeks ago we bought a small basic one for our motor home. It does a good job and knows its place!,

Norah Thu 22-Jun-23 19:14:52

Our was quite old, very rarely used, my brother killed it this week. Wonderful, more space and no useless appliance!

tiredoldwoman Thu 22-Jun-23 19:30:30

I use my old Sharp every day , it must be 21 years old . The light went out last week so maybe it's beginning to ' go' !

Fleur20 Thu 22-Jun-23 20:28:50

Please Riverwalk... not landfill.. recycle please!!😉😉
