Coat Donation For Homeless.

Would you donate a good quality M&S Blue Harbour winter coat for the homeless if the zip doesn’t always stay fastened?

It has good press studs, so would stay fastened up, but obviously not so good without the zip also.

It’s really warm and cosy, apart from the dodgy zip.

I feel it would keep someone dry and warm as it is, but can’t sew myself and don’t feel like buying a new heavy duty zip and having to pay for it to be put in.

Thoughts welcome, even if you don’t agree.

Sounds perfectly usable and I’m sure would be gratefully received.

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 07-Nov-23 14:33:17

Perfectly acceptable I would think.

Jaxjacky Tue 07-Nov-23 14:47:46

Definiely, much better than no coat.

Theexwife Tue 07-Nov-23 15:40:08

Personally I would not, if it wasn’t good enough for me to wear then I would not expect someone else to.

BlueBelle Tue 07-Nov-23 15:47:27

It would be fine, even better if you could find a belt that looked ok with it in case the zip didn’t work so well
Well if we all did that theexwife they probably never get any donations
If I was homeless in this weather I wouldn’t be looking at the style the buttons or the zip or anything else I d be getting it on and wrapping it tight round me even if I used string

Good points BlueBelle

Perfectly acceptable .

I agree, however made mistake sitting down with homeless veteran chatting. Rumours spread I was begging for money. Gave him blankets, cash, found that he was a fraud. Sat next to cash machine, people gave him notes. Probably living it up, imo I was a fool. Surrender are genuine people and will continue the way I am.

So long as it is wearable, I'm sure someone can make use of it. I have just donated a good-as-new camel coat to the Salvation Army. It has never suited me, but I hope someone else will like it.

Callistemon21 Tue 07-Nov-23 17:15:26

I'm wondering what is wrong with the zip?
I have an M&S padded jacket which starts opening from the bottom, annoyingly, unless one side of the zipper bottom is really firmly jammed in.

Callistemon21 Tue 07-Nov-23 17:16:21

The poppers still work so it should be fine, better than being cold.

Calendargirl Tue 07-Nov-23 17:35:13

That sounds the same problem as mine Callistemon.

It’s not broken, just unzips itself.

Callistemon21 Tue 07-Nov-23 17:46:32

It's embarrassing rather than chilly.

I still like it and there's a knack to zipping it up!

I don't understand your point Theewife. Sounds very noble - but really!!?? Good job we don't all think that way or there would be even more people on the streets who freeze to death. Calendargirl some one will appreciate your coat.

I feel confused Anita79. Not quite sure what happened.

I’m big into giving stuff to charity, but if the zip doesn’t work, it won’t keep someone as warm as it should as poppers/press studs can fly open if the coat fits a bit too snuggly. I threw such a coat away a few months ago, because the zip was faulty and I didn’t want to give away something defective to a homeless person or a charity. I’d hung into the coat for some time, but I wasn’t able to put in a new zip myself, so I binned it, but felt really guilty doing so as I try not to throw things away, especially clothes. The majority of my stuff that I no longer wear goes to charity, but not the broken zipped coat, unfortunately.

Callistemon21 Tue 07-Nov-23 19:42:15

The zip does work, I think, but is rather temperamental, like the one on my M&S coat.

Better than no coat at all, I still wear mine!

The question was, would you donate ….. I answered no I would not, we dont have to all agree. I do donate, things that no longer fit or that I no longer like, I dont know how that translates to if others thought the same then people on the street would freeze to death.

ginny Tue 07-Nov-23 23:11:36

Oh would donate tit. Better a warm coat that does up even if the zip is temperamental than no coat.
A group I belong to have been knitting warm hats for homeless people. The ones I have been knitting are cosy , plain garter stitch pull ons. I figured I could knit twice as many in less time than using a ribbed or fancy pattern .

Doodledog Tue 07-Nov-23 23:27:04

Why not donate it to a charity shop? Someone who can sew might buy it and put a new zip in.

Otherwise yes, I would donate it. A coat with poppers is better than no coat at all.

henetha Tue 07-Nov-23 23:30:42

Definitely I would donate it. It could be exactly what someone needs .

Ailsa43 Tue 07-Nov-23 23:42:53

There's a great likelihood that if donated to a charity with an unusable zip that it will be put into the Rag Bag. Personally I would take the coat and find someone on the streets to give it to...
