Remaining anonymous?

Just curious, I haven't taken advantage of any meet ups but I am curious as to whether those who do remain anonymous? Using their GN name rather than revealing their real name . do some people wish to keep their identity to themselves?

If you take me to Rome, I could buy plenty designer factory overmakes for a tenner at the market, Calli. πŸ˜‚

Callistemon21 Sat 18-Nov-23 20:31:03

😁

I need help, though, Marydoll!

I'm prepared to pay over the odds.
Will a tenner do?

My daughter was horrified, when I told her I was going to meet people I had met online. She thought I was going to be kidnapped.

I'll kidnap you - you can be my personal shopper, Marydoll 😁

Calli, you couldn't afford me! wink.

I would run amok! πŸ˜‚

Aw Marydoll I didn't think of kidnapping you but now you've put the idea in my head......

My dear friend, I am too much hard work. You will regret it! πŸ˜‰

My favourite username of recent years has been SirChenjin but I've not seen her posting for quite a while.

I sort of like the anonymity as others have mentioned.

My first GN meetup was in Edinburgh.
A restaurant, a name, a time. I arrived and instantly forgot the name to ask for so mumbled at the reception and was shown into the restaurant to "find" my "friends" . Luckily someone spotted my confusion and I was welcomed to a table.

Since then I have been to quite a few in Edinburgh and Glasgow and can confirm that they are full of fun, chat and nice food.

I tell people if they are curious, that I have some friends I met on the internet! Like internet dating. πŸ˜„

Any meet ups York area?

Celieanne86 Sat 18-Nov-23 16:57:38

I like the anonymity as I feel you can express opinions without fear or favour and I thought thank heavens for this when I was told a friend who has a motor mouth and is a nosy creature is also a member. As yet I’ve not worked out her pen name but I will oh yes I will and I can’t wait 😜

I met up with a couple of GNs on the moving house thread because one was thinking of moving to my area. We ate scones (cream first) on the beach during covid. We used our real names.

Grandmama Sat 18-Nov-23 16:26:00

I had a meet-up years ago and I seem to remember having a meet-up name different from this name.

Callistemon21 Sat 18-Nov-23 16:14:14

Ps But, like Callistemon, I prefer the anonymity of GN
That wasn't me, I do know a couple of Gransnetters πŸ™‚

Callistemon21 Sat 18-Nov-23 16:12:16

I'm not young!
Well, younger than some (we do have a centenarian Gransnetter) and older than others 😁

DamaskRose Sat 18-Nov-23 15:23:23

I’ve really enjoyed this thread and I’m so pleased that many of you found RL friendship. But, like Callistemon, I prefer the anonymity of GN. The thing I’d like to know is the age of some Grans! Some of you sound so young, like the above mentioned and Whitewave and Maizie!

Not too sure how I'd feel about a meet up with other gn's. Quite like the fact that everything on here is anonymous and even with that I am careful about recording facts that might identify me to anybody who knows me. If there were to be a local meet up then I don't know how I would hear about it but I would give my real first name - my memory is not very good anymore so better safe than sorry!

You might find that you make new friends, like I did.
We don't give a lot of personal information away, unless we make a conscious decision to do so.

Hi Everyone,
I didn’t even know that Gransnetters could meet up. Do any meet up in Milton Keynes? I’d love the chance to meet up.

What a pleasant thread.

Greyduster Sat 18-Nov-23 13:08:34

Until covid put us all into lockdown, I attended one particular GN meet up fairly regularly. We never really had any difficulty identifying each other and the restaurant staff seemed to know why we were there as soon as any one of us walked in the door. They were lovely occasions and Christian names were used. I have four Gransnetters with whom I have carried on a regular email correspondence for some years and we have developed a lovely rapport. We have all met once and live too far apart to do so again, but during the past two years, they have all kept me afloat in a way that posting on line could not possibly have done. I am grateful they have my back. I hope they know that I have theirs.

mokryna Sat 18-Nov-23 12:43:34

True story but not with gransnet.
My daughter was going to a meetup for other unknown owners of ski flats. She approach a group of people sitting round a table, grabbed a spare chair and proceeded to introduce herself and other details only to find out, when she finally stopped to take breath, it wasn’t her group but a friends meeting up. They all laughed about it.

Alie2Oxon Sat 18-Nov-23 12:17:55

Yes really funny, welbeck! I did one meetup and no hiding there.

Could I put in a comment on some of the cleverest usernames?

Eg... SueDonim, M0nica - and Alchemilla?
