Remaining anonymous?

Just curious, I haven't taken advantage of any meet ups but I am curious as to whether those who do remain anonymous? Using their GN name rather than revealing their real name . do some people wish to keep their identity to themselves?

welbeck "Carry on Grannying"
Priceless 😂😂😂

welbeck Wed 15-Nov-23 16:14:28

V3ra, v many thanks for such an accolade.
and thanks to Pascal30, LauraNorderr, and Callistemon.
the scenario appealed to me as a kind of carry on grannying, with kenneth williams, maybe.
as for some of the user-names, well,
if the cat fits, swing it. or something.

well, we don't know that the plausible sounding jennys, sarahs, cynthias and susans, are their real names, any more than fatface, big-granny, slo-mo, iknowitallsothere, and other usernames...

the image of grans approaching strangers in pubs or garden centres, muttering, redrosy?, sofasox?,
conjures up the best ealing comedy spy spoof.

This has got to be the best and funniest post I have ever read on Gransnet 😂😂😂

You have to read it in a spoof French accent, as in 'Allo 'Allo!
😂

"Is ze postaire known az sofasox 'ere today?"

I nearly made it to a Glesca Grans meet-up even though I’m a long way from Glasgow. I was going to be visiting and would have loved an opportunity to meet some Gransnet friends. Unfortunately the trip had to be cancelled and I haven’t been well enough to plan another trip yet,

Some on here have become friends and I know some names. Many know my name.

I think it’s up to the individual really.

LauraNorderr Wed 15-Nov-23 10:27:32

welbeck you have made me laugh with that hilarious post.

nanna8 Wed 15-Nov-23 10:21:43

Oh no - she left a while back but will be back under name number 4, perhaps ?

It’s a bit of a long way for me to go so,no,I haven’t. I wouldn’t mind, though. It would be interesting to connect names and faces! I had a laugh as Greenfinch’s post - imagine asking if someone was ‘Hazbeen’ - sorry Hazbeen but they might take it the wrong way and give you a punch!

Redhead56 Tue 14-Nov-23 23:16:23

I don’t go to meeting Auntieflo still posts on here. I like the recipes she has posted in the past and still use them.

Greenfinch Tue 14-Nov-23 20:25:52

Oh Hazbeen, I am so glad you are still on Gransnet. We had a good couple of meet ups in your area.

HAZBEEN Tue 14-Nov-23 20:07:48

Hi Greenfinch I am still here but havent posted for a long time. I will PM you soon to catch up.

My first GN meet up was a lunch at a restaurant in a popular spot. I arrived early and sat outside trying to guess who might also be going to it. I asked one lady if she was a Gran and she glared at me and pushed past! Luckily a group of others turned up and I was soon happily included and thoroughly enjoyed the chat. The meal was quite nice but the company was better.

The Glesca Grannies use first names, no surnames. They are a lovely bunch of grans and we all get on well with each other.
However, that doesn't mean we don't welcome new people to the group.

Some of us do keep in touch outside of GN, so know each other's surnames.

kittylester Tue 14-Nov-23 19:36:33

I have met lots of lovely Grans in real life.

Calendargirl Tue 14-Nov-23 19:12:23

I like this forum for the anonymity to be honest. I don’t (wouldn’t) go to meet ups. This, for me, is just an online exchange of opinions and ideas.

My thoughts exactly. Much as I enjoy GN, I have no interest in meeting others, it’s totally separate to ‘real life’, if that makes sense.

If you meet someone in real life you generally use your real name but I suppose in the meet up section Gran1244 and nanna25xfromBadingstoke might post as other identities on chat? Who knows? We are all an experiment

welbeck Tue 14-Nov-23 18:46:07

that's good to hear.
i think most people try to be helpful, or at least sympathetic, most of the time.
take care.

BlueBelle Tue 14-Nov-23 18:45:01

I e never been to any meet ups as there are none near me but I do have some very very good lovely email friends from Gransnet and of course we use our own names

Urmstongran Tue 14-Nov-23 18:40:49

That said, the warmth, support and kindness extended to me ‘virtually’ has been amazing and comforting in equal measure.

The lovely GN friends that I meet with all know each others names.

In one case we realised we knew each others family members.

Shelflife Tue 14-Nov-23 17:36:16

I would have been surprised if people did not give their real names but just wondered, I thought people might wish to remain anonymous as they do online.

Galaxy Tue 14-Nov-23 17:25:31

It would be funny if that was the case but I cant imagine it is.
