My DGD is 17months old and is yet to walk. She cruises around furniture and she is a bum shuffler. My DD is concerned abs is due to see the health visitor soon.
I have read that bum shuffler can be late walkers. Any advice appreciated. Thank you for reading

How are her other milestones? Is she talking?

Ilovecheese Tue 16-Jan-24 10:26:40

One of mine didn't walk until 19 months. I wouldn't worry yet.

My DGS was also late to actually walk but mainly because he was so busy chatting and being interactive.

My DGD, who is now 19 months was a late walker until about 17 month. She had been a high-speed crawler and could walk round the furniture, holding on. Since she decided to walk there has been no holding her. My DGS, her uncle, could talk before he walked, though he too could get anywhere by crawling. As a adult, he is quite athletic. So, if our experience is anything to go by, your DGD is just biding her time which I am sure the health visitor will confirm.

One of my grandchildren didn’t walk until she was 2. She is now 16, top of most of her subjects and a great ballet dancer who can do the splits easily. She is by nature cautious and I think she wouldn’t walk early because she thought she might fall. Unless she is slow in other ways, I wouldn’t worry.

My DD was a bum shuffler, never crawled. Didn’t walk until 19 months old.

This was nearly 50 years ago. Remember (to my shame) feeling embarrassed when we were in the company of her peers, some were 6 months younger than she was but running around all over the place.

She walked late, but talked and did everything else usual time.

Unless behind hand with other stuff, don’t worry.

GS didn’t walk till he was 2 because he had hyper mobility. Could get her checked out? Mind you, my mother said I was toilet trained before I walked!

She's good excellent vocabulary and motor skills. Good tantrums too.

My eldest walked at 12months the youngest at 11 months the middle one was over 19 months!! Please don't worry , she will surprise you one day. Our middle one was sitting one day and suddenly struggled up and walked across the room!!! Keep us posted .

I have three children the first walked at 12 months the second 13 months and number three was just over 18 months why walk when there was everybody waiting on him, but once he started there was no stopping him.

My youngest granddaughter was walking at 10 months but my grandson didn’t until he was 15ths. Like I said to both my DILs when they ready they will do it no time scale just because Mollys little is don’t mean pollys should it’s not a competition. I used to child mind kids and I had one that bum shuffled and her parents thought with her being with other kids she would have been quick and one day I was giving them all a ice pop and turned to give her one she just walked towards and no stopping her after that she was 2 weeks later.

Early years are not a series of “targets” to be met.
Unless there is something physically wrong in her development she will stand up and walk when she is ready.
My middle D was nearly 2, also a bum-shuffler which of course frees up both hands for toys, unlike crawling, so there may be a connection.

All mine walked at 15 1/2 months. My sister had two walk at 10 months and two at 20 months. My ex-husband walked at 20 months.

No difference between any of them by the time they were three, nor as adults. It’s not a race.

16 months for son No 1 and he had the audacity to walk straight across the room without a stumble. His glee suggested 'that'll teach you not to worry!'

Cabbie21 Tue 16-Jan-24 15:11:26

My daughter walked like a cat on all fours for quite a while. She could go very fast with no risk of falling!

Freya5 Tue 16-Jan-24 15:12:49

My boy didn't walk until he was two. He would stand by furniture, walk around it holding on. Then one day when he saw his sister, that was it off he went. So I shouldn't worry, babies will do what they need to do in their own time. They all reach the milestones when they are ready. Unless there has been any problems picked since birth, I think too many people automatically think there is so something wrong.

My dd was a bum shuffler too and was a late walker. Then suddenly one day she stood up and walked…

AGAA4 Tue 16-Jan-24 15:46:19

She'll walk when she's ready. Nothing to worry about.

Our granddaughter was 22 months before she walked.
She was in our care for a week as her parents were both working away.
We took her each day to a soft play at a quiet time.
On day 3 she walked, she was so proud of herself.
That afternoon she was running around our garden laughing!
We sent the video to Mummy and Daddy, they cried with joy, they were convinced something was wrong.

Madgran77 Tue 16-Jan-24 19:07:37

Apparently I was a bum shuffle and didnt walk until 22 months! My eldest granddaughter dodnt walk until 20 months. Dont worry about it!

grannypiper Tue 16-Jan-24 19:19:48

Both my boys were 18 months, there elder Sister done their bidding so there was no reason to walk.

JaneJudge Tue 16-Jan-24 19:22:25

I wouldn't worry about it even if it is raised as a concern. If she requires a bit of physio she will get a referral (hopefully) and she'll most probably be walking before she sees anyone smile

It's good that your daughter is going to discuss it with the Health Visitor, for her own piece of mind. However I'm sure that the HV will confirm that that really aren't concerned on a child under 2.
Another 6 months and you will all be wondering why you were all so worried.
