Inane chat in Radio 2

Does anyone else get fed up of the silly chitter chatter in between the music on radio 2? On certain programmes at peak times of day, there seems too much talk about nothing at all really - talking on the spot talk as my late mother used to say. And ridiculous questions by DJ’s - what are you doing now and - the piece de resistance - what are you having for dinner? This silly stuff can take up an inordinate amount of time, during which less music is being played. Is it so that Radio 2 doesn’t have to pay so much in Royalties, as very little music is actually played? I know there are lonely people out there who perhaps enjoy phoning in, but I’ve noticed the chitchat has increased of late on certain programmes. Yes, I know I could tune into another channel, but is anyone else as irritated as this grumpy so and so?! By the way, not every DJ chats too much for my liking. For example, I really like Tony Blackburn, Steve Wright and ooh Gary Davies who have just the right amount of chat - some of it silly, but they’re not asking what I’m having for dinner!

My pet hate is “What would Sally do?”. Oo, Sally (the weather woman) has forgotten her gloves and it’s cold, would she go back for them or just put her hands in her pocket, blah di blah. And people ring in and vote, apparently. confused I’m shouting at Alexa to switch it off as soon as I hear What would…., sometimes with a choice suggestion, not one of the options, as to what I think Sally should do. Yes, I am indeed a grumpy old woman.

On the other hand, Liza Tarbuck can witter all she wants as far as I’m concerned - I do enjoy her brand of daft chatter.

How could anybody find anything to chat about there?hmm
(How many threads and pages of posts have we had and are currently running on GN on the subject?
What are you having for dinner ? ) gringringrin

I was about to say it sounds like GN! 😂

It doesn’t bother me, I like to hear a bit of banter between the songs. It’s nothing new, Terry Wogan, and Jimmy Young were both born to it.

Am I wrong in suggesting that BBC2 is aimed at a middle aged audience?

I love Johnnie Walker on a Sunday used to listen to him on drive time. Mostly listen to smooth radio now.

I loved to listen to Jimmy Young & Terry Wogan chat together, so funny," what's the recipe today Jim " such a long time ago now.

I have stopped listening to Jeremy Vine. He is like a moaning old woman. He goes on and on about certain topics, speaks over callers and is just so boring.

He’s laughing though because he gets paid a fortune. We are keeping him in work on radio and his ch 5 morning prog which is even worse than the radio.

Sounds of the 70's? I always tune into it. Loved Johnny Walker when he was on Radio 1 in the 70's. He got fired for refusing to play the Bay City Rollers.

I miss Ken Bruce. 😢

Me too 😃
Some inane threads, controversial threads, just like GN

But none of the DJs have got what Young, Wogan and Bruce had!!

And the greengrocer - what was his name?
He really hated parsnips!

Some people enjoy chit chat, either on the radio or on here. Either participate or move on to something that interests you, but don’t knock it. If it’s not your cup of tea, don’t drink it.

I can't stand Zoe Ball's babbling and I don't like Vernon's manic laughter every 5 minutes.

Loved Ken Bruce - his voice is perfect, and he has a good dry sense of humour - and have followed him to Greatest Hits Radio even though I have to put up with their adverts.

I agree that some DJs do witter on a lot. Vernon Kay and Rylan do it too much, think it's just a time-filler. Sounds of the 70s with Johnnie Walker is the best show of the week (I'm a girl of the 70s!). The rest of the time, I prefer the music of R2, just tuning in to GHR for Popmaster.

I am getting used to the new Radio 2 lineup and am coping!!!

I am so old that I used to listen to Johnny Walker doing the bBreakfast show on Radio 1.

I am grumpy and irritated that my BBC local radio station has changed, lots of good presenters been paid off and younger people on now. talking dunking biscuits this morning even having a person from a biscuit company on!

GrannyGravy13 Sun 21-Jan-24 10:17:23

Like kittylester I am coming round to the new Radio 2 line up, I do enjoy Sara Cox at tea time and I am starting to enjoy Vernon Kay.

My first memories of radio 1 are listening to Tony Blackburn on his morning show as I was getting ready and having my breakfast in my last year of primary school.

I really miss the BBC Radio Kent presenters, who have left - Steve Ladner, Julia George, Ray Clark to name a few. Ray now has two programmes on Radio Caroline, but I don’t know where Steve and Julia have gone.

I haven't listened to BBC radio 2 for a long time. My preferred listening is Scala Radio or Boom Radio.

Same here although I can’t warm to Scott Mills.

I used to love listening to Johnny Walker’s Drivetime show with Sally Boazman doing the traffic reports. They were such a great double act I would often be crying with laughter over their antics. Those were the days!

The main thing that Radio 2 has going for it is the sound quality. Radio Scotland is so bad that you can't listen to music on it.
