Birthday present for 70 year old man

I am looking for inspiration from other Grans for suggestions for a man's 70th birthday present.
I don't particularly want to buy nice wine or a food hamper, as I have done that previously. Nothing stands out on the John Lewis or M&S gift pages. He is not sporty though is fit and active.
Any suggestions gratefully received.

Is he interested in gardening? There are always lots of gardening-related gifts, including a gift voucher for a local garden centre.

A weather station - men seem to love them.

Bluebelle - some suggestions are well beyond my budget, though others are suitable.

Another thought- search on eBay for 70th birthday coin. They are coins in year of birth, sixpence, threepenny bit etc made up as key rings and the like and very reasonable.

Pisceslady - I've looked at those and seem a good idea.

My children clubbed together and bought a voucher for a tasting menu meal at a Michelin starred restaurant when DH had his 70th birthday. It was an unforgettable experience and one we will probably not be able to repeat.

A Paxton and Whitfield online zoom cheese tasting. You get sent the cheeses ahead of time (4/5 large hunks) and enjoy a one hour group talk from a P and W cheesemonger.

I'm at a loss for a 10th birthday present for my granddaughter. It's hard to get her off her ipad, but games nowadays are all downloaded so it's difficult to get her anything to go with that. Any suggestions gratefully received.

I got my husband a vintage map (19th Century) of the area where we lived at that time. It was just a copy of a fold-out map, but very nicely printed, framed and obviously showed the area without more recent buildings. I think there a few shops and online sites selling this sort of thing, you could ask your local framing shop for advice. He loved it.
We bought our cricket mad friend who lives in Vauxhall a print of a match of the Oval which she loved.
My daughter bought us a season ticket to Kew Gardens, though obviously we live a bus ride away.
Rather than fancy meals out, why not pay for a meal out in a restaurant you know that he loves?
My husband loves books and if you know his interests it should be relatively easy to find something he'd like - but check with his wife that he doesn't already have it.
The only other thing that I'd say is that it's probably a mistake to buy him "stuff" as we all have far too much of that.

These days, I think gift vouchers/cards are very acceptable.
Someone gave us a voucher for our local cinema which is an independent one and very small. We go there a lot and it felt like a very thoughtful gift. In fact we are going today nd it’s effectively a free trip out! I also love a book store gift card as I read a lot and books are expensive.

Does he like music? CD or 2 - be it classical or other kind of music? Or token for buying cd's. I agree with all the people who have said book tokens.
Or offer to take him (and his wife!) out to a lovely tea somewhere - a proper tea is a huge treat I reckon.

We were given a map jigsaw which included the street we live in. We are in our 70s and thought it a great present, personal and thoughtful. And I don’t imagine hugely expensive.

Hi Elusivebutterfly, I’m also going to a male’s 70th birthday celebration soon, and I’ve bought him BrainBox for Seniors. It’s a card game that’ll take them down Memory Lane. It’s on Amazon at a reasonable price. It’s a bit of fun, especially over a glass of wine or two!

No mention if he’s married, single, attached. Great answers here, but my recommendations would be:

1) Skip the wine and go for a good bottle of scotch, whiskey!! - it’s his 70th!
2) a gift card to a bookstore (hope this guy reads!)
3) gift card to a restaurant - or - personally take him/them out for a lovely, relaxing meal.

At the age of 70 they don’t need much more in the way of a “boxed gift”. Your taste may not be his. Play it safe.

We bought some wine for a friend, but from a local vineyard and they printed a message on the wine bottle label. He was delighted with his 'bespoke' wine!

A home brew kit I bought my neighbor for his 70th his wife said it was his best present because he now lives in his shed lol. Or buy him a mini greenhouse and say sorry couldn’t carry a bigger one

LinAnn52 Sun 10-Mar-24 15:02:58

We bought a friend a lovely crystal whisky glass, engraved with his name and “70 years young” on it.

NotSpaghetti Sun 10-Mar-24 15:06:30

We gave my father-in-law a pair of whisky tumblers for his 70th. I had forgotten. They were very well received.

chattykathy Sun 10-Mar-24 16:20:12

If there's a Veeno restaurant nearby, they do a great wine and food tasting experience for not a lot of money.

Aldom Sun 10-Mar-24 16:32:33

If you think he would be interested, what about a Bonsai tree?

lemsip Sun 10-Mar-24 17:08:21

take him out to somewhere nice for dinner.

My husband has just turned 70. He likes jigsaw puzzles and building kits (and films), so our son and daughter bought him a Lego adult 18+ Delorean car kit (from ‘Back to the Future’). He loved building it. Lego do other kits too, e.g. Star Wars memorabilia. Not cheap though…😎
