Fancy dress ideas

My grandson wants us all to dress up as characters from films for his 18th. Given us plenty of warning.

So, suggestions please of something suitable for elderly lady, on tubby size (14-16 but might endeavour to lose a few pounds). Nothing glamorous, comfortable but with a bit of flair. Recognisable character. NOT something that entails a full body suit eg bugs bunny or I will melt.

Mind blank, inspiration won’t come. Need your help.

Suggestions please.

Miss Marple?

Feathered hat, cardigan and handbag….

Cruella de Ville ? Long black dress, black and white boa, cheap black and white wig and something that looks like a long cigarette holder.

Brilliant both ideas!

If you have lovely white hair, perhaps style as Helen Mirren as Queen Elizabeth. Wear a "crown" and carry a handbag.

Bonus: a corgi or Paddington Bear.

up .....

My first idea was Professor Sprout too, but there was a small stout very charming lady, I can neither remember her name or the character's in "Tea with Mussolini" the version with Maggie Smith if there are more than one versions of that film.

Or if you would rather be less lovable: stick with Harry Potter but go as Dolores Umbridge!

Minnie Mouse? Mouse ears headband, big red bow, red n white spotted dress. Or Judi Dench as M in James Bond.

I think it needs to be something quite obvious as some quite nice ideas won't work so well for an 18 year old (and anyone younger)

Men in black , just needs black trousers , white shirt and jacket plus dark glasses .

Ditto for the blues brothers .

I have a mini the minx outfit I drag out when I’m prevailed upon to dress up. Black beret, red and black striped jumper or tee shirt, red ribbons in my hair and red socks.
I look ridiculous but that’s the point!

What about Gangsta Granny?

I agree, or you’ll end up all evening explaining who you are.

I was thinking that too

Mary Poppins is an easy one. Gladstone bag, traditional umbrella, jacket, long skirt and a hat.

Quokka Sat 27-Apr-24 22:36:43

Thanks for the inspiration. I’m tempted by a few of them but it will have to be something very obvious so that, as some have already said, I don’t spend all the time explaining who I am.
