I lived in a violent, abusive household. I was neglected, never had days out, holidays, pantomime visits etc. I had had nits. Aged 7 I was put into a van and taken to be deloused. I had one child. What I wanted for her was for her to be clean, fed, have holidays, days out, finances permitting. Be normal. I succeeded.

Well done! It’s so good to have peace of mind where our children are concerned.

( Incidentally, I first read your post as ‘ at 71 I was put in a van’, and thought ‘ how ungrateful’!)

I wanted mine to be happy and successful academically, because I thought that having some education under their belt would give them more choices in life. They were all academically successful. One is very, very happy. One is pretty happy, and the other undergoing a difficult divorce and so life is not blissful for her at the moment.

I am glad that mine are all healthy and fit and have decent moral values, which they have passed on to their children. I can't remember having any ambitions for them; I just enjoyed watching them develop and work their way through life.

Another surprise is that although coming from a long line of keen gardeners none of them have a clue about plants or weeds.

All I've ever wanted for my kids is for them to be happy, everything else is irrelevant.

My parents directed my life for me until I was 18. I had a place at a red-brick university but put my foot down and refused to go, I don't think they ever forgave me. We let our boys do exactly what they wanted.

Health and Happiness and financially independent

I wanted mine to be happy and know they are loved 😍 We achieved that.

For them to be content, have good manners and respect other people, I think they both do that, so do other people that know them.

I used to beg my two boys to become dentists, it would have saved me a fortune, but one’s an accountant and the other’s an engineer. 😩

Seriously, my children have the lives/careers they aspired to and that’s fine by me.

All we ever wanted for our children was to be happy, healthy and find a job that suited their talents. Which I’m forever grateful they have. My DD did very well academically, but is also artistic, and was offered a part time job in a beauty salon, because of the way she did her make up, but when she told her physics teacher this, her teacher immediately told her it would a waste of her talents and all her hard work in school. She arranged for DD to do some work experience at a nuclear medicine dept and that persuaded DD that she really wanted to work in health care, she graduated uni and does really in her job, so we definitely have a lot to be thankful for.

You are obviously a really good mother, who has succeeded at breaking the cycle of abuse and given your daughter the best possible chances in life.

Lol mine did loads of singing teachers said could go far mine had other ideas, got well paid jobs though own houses grandkids in private schools i couldn’t be more prouder but I’d be proud no matter what they did as long has they were happy and comfortable now just gotta hope that talent comes out with my grandkids and then i can really brag 🤣

I have three adult children. My oldest is quite disabled by autism and went to a special school, so our ambitions for him were naturally somewhat different from those of our other children. The biggest ambition was for him to be as independent as possible. He has succeeded. He lives in a flat by himself, keeps it clean and is a fantastic cook. He is able to take trains and buses and order tickets online. He is an excellent photographer, too and extremely helpful at church. In addition to this, he is in a community choir. He is not capable of working in a commercial environment, but works in a charity shop for two afternoons a week and works in a café that is especially for disabled people to gain work experience. We are equally proud of our other children - our second son is in the RAF. This was not a surprise to me as he was in the scout movement and loved the regular parades. He is also a talented musician. Our daughter is a flautist and gained a distinction in her masters in music performance. At present, she is working in a school. However, I think l was probably proudest of her during the pandemic when, as a student, she worked as a carer in a nursing home.

All three exceeded expectations. Just wanted health and happiness for them.

My dream was for my three children to be happy, healthy, safe - and preferably self supporting! And now with 30+ twins and a 28 year old I can finally say that they have achieved all my objectives 😄

I hoped he would be happy, healthy , and enjoy his life without too much anxiety. That he would enjoy his work and have good friends and meet someone to share his life with. It has been lovely that with the exceptions of those periods that we all have to cope with, he has been able to do this.
(But one thing I remember saying to him when he was looking at what he wanted to do, I said whatever you are interested in ,so long as it is legal , but I will feel a failure as a mother if you become a politician!! It was only the other night that he rang me and he was talking about the election and reminded me about what I had said to him, and how glad he was that he had never entered that field. As he said, mum As I am not a good liar, dont think I should be able to ignore rules that I expect others to keep, I wouldnt have made a politician these days!)

As I liked Mathematics I hoped my two sons would follow. I encouraged but didn’t push. I ended up with one son into computers and the other one a chartered accountant. Well pleased.

As a keen netbalker I hoped my daughter would play for England!! Wrong!!!
She went down the drama route, had 3 excellent years at uni but decided she wasn’t hungry enough for the stage so did her masters in social work and is now an expert on adoption! I am proud of all she has achieved and the things she has done ! She is funny, caring, feisty, independent , a good cook and an empathetic manager but expects the best from her team ! What more could I ask for?

We wanted our two to be happy and health. Otherwise we went with what they wanted and supported them all the way. They have both turned out well.

Alcohol Addiction runs on both sides of my family, all I wanted was for them to be armed with the tools to avoid the heart break .

I just wanted mine to be healthy, happy, and financially secure.
