Omaprazole

Hello
I’ve recently been diagnosed with silent reflux and and a small hiatus hernia. Also a torturous oesophagus. As I was finding it painful to swallow when I eat I accepted the GPs decision to prescribe Onaprazoke inspite of being anti medication. I’ve now been on it for nearly a year and have tried several times to gradually reduce until stopping altogether. However, when I do this the pain on swallowing food returns. I’ve heard long term use can cause osteoporosis and Vitamin D deficiency so not concerned about continuing with it.
Anyone else on one of the drugs for reflux?

I've been taking Omeprazole for a good twelve years (at least). #always losing my voice and with an irritating cough that was driving my family crazy, an ENT consultant diagnosed laryngo-pharyngeal reflux and prescribed omeprazole which successfully sorted out the hoarseness. I was also prescribed Ranitidine but that was removed because of a manufacturing issue in India and it has never returned. I do not have VitD deficiency and have reached the age of 83 without noticeable complications due to omeprazole and am very thankful that I still have a voice!

Annodomini, I've had problems with my throat for years. I know it's due to the reflux. I think I must have had it as a child even. I wonder if children should be screened as often this silent issue coukd easily be mistaken for just a cough/sort throat due to a virus.

I take Lansoprazole for reflux. I also have my bed sloping from the head end to the foot, raised at the top on 7 inch concrete blocks. I also don't eat anything much after seven in the evening. No more reflux.

Nexium is OTC and contains esomeprazole if you ever get stuck.

CKD & COPD what's this?

Only read first page so far.

When I said about vertigo, most was not too bad, but 2 episodes, if I described them, you would say I had had a mini stroke, [but def. The tablets] I lost vision, could see colour, but nothing else. They were 3 weeks apart, the first one I sort of fell into the door frame, thought; what's wrong with me
the second one I flopped onto the bed, couldn't see, aside from colour. Recovered quickly, but felt very shaken.

The other disturbing thing; I got food poisoning, dashed to the loo; terrible diarrhoea, but couldn't be sick, I was heaving, my body was sort of convulsing, but nothing would come up out of my stomach, I thought 'it's those tablets! because they close off your reflux pump. It was frightening! After hours I was finally sick, probably because the effects of the tablets had worn off. So that's when I stopped taking them.

Yes Oldenough

I cut out tomatoes, which I loved and ate lots per day, I have sour dough, malted bread, only one slice for an open sandwich. Have lacteous free milk in my tea & coffee, Lemon & ginger tea after lunch and if needed after dinner. I don't eat dinner 3 evenings per week, to give my stomach a rest & my portions are small.

Haven't taken any tablets for 2 months now and all side effects gone. I was particularly concerned for my brain!

Freshair I was original on 40mg per day, taken at night.

Your brain needs acid.

Yes, I was falling asleep all the time too.

Feel much healthy now, without the tabs.

Must do the same.

A friend recommended this but too expensive for me. She says she's reduced her medication considerably since using it. Apparently, it's also good for snoring.

Raised my bed yesterday, so did my son smile, good night's sleep, no reflux, but only first day, see how it is after a Sunday roast grin. Used 2 house bricks either side & in the middle, which equates to 5.5inches higher, seems high enough though.

When I told my son what I was going to do, he said 'Oh, I was thinking of doing that. Apparently, the Egyptians always slept so.

This was mention upthread. It seems to be most effective for hiatus hernia sufferers, and you have to be motivated to do the regular exercises. The headline is rather misleading because I can’t see that many, or any health authorities are actually prescribing it. If bought privately it’s over £100, but I guess if it does work it’s better than a lifetime of medication. As far as I could see the research on its effectiveness has been fairly small scale.
