Have I lost my cash? Carpetright!

Carpetright has gone bust within days of me paying for a bedroom carpet. They took my cash and even sent a chap round to measure up and give me a fitting date!! I am upset and furious. Received post this morning basically telling me to contact my bank and see if they are in a position to refund me. Unfortunately and foolishly I paid with a debit card which I know is not as secure as a credit card. I will visit my bank as soon as I can but wondered if anyone could give me any reassurance on this matter. I am not a happy bunny!!

Years ago I bought bedroom furniture from a company that went bust. i received a full refund even though the furniture had been put together and was being used in my kids bedroom! I didn't send it back. I still have the bookcase!

Why a refund when you had already received & built it up? Bit dishonest

Really glad you got your money refunded. My DD won't have a credit card and I do worry about that as some hotels will only accept a credit card, and also it's safer for large purchases. Atm she uses her brother's card and transfers him the amount spent straight away. On her trip to France the booking agent wouldn't accept a debit card for her hotel.

Im wondering how that affects my warranty on the houseful of flooring i paid over 1100 pounds for last october?🤔

Hope you get this back via your Bank.
Happen to us years ago with Courts.. We orderd bedroom furniture for DD bedroom, they went under as we were due to get it.
We were so lucky, it had arrived in store, they honoured the orders they had in stock, so surprised when someone phoned us asking us to take delivery, what a relief.
We too paid by Debit card, I have never bought large items again on a Debit card, alway Credit card then paid it off.
With luck you might get your carpet?

We too had ordered from Courts . We got part of the order but my DD never got her new wardrobe. I don't think we lost money though. I can't remember as it is so long ago, but I think we had only paid a deposit so we probably paid the balance of the item we did receive.

If the goods were in stock you may still get the carpet. I hope you ae able to sort it out satisfactorily.

Thankyou undines, I know you are correct . I should not have paid by debit card - won't make that mistake again.
Just been into my bank and received very helpful and sympathetic advice , phone number to ring etc. After jumping through a few hoops the money has been refunded into my account!! Used chargeback -
Callistemon, I can't thank you enough for the link you gave me . Had a message telling me all will be well unless Carpetright dispute my claim - don't think that will happen.
Such a relief , again thank Callistemon 😊.

I'm really pleased to hear your news, Shelflife.

🤞 All remains well

I am so glad you have your money back. We nearly went to Carpetright back in June but ended up at SCS. We agreed with the sales person that the fitting would not be until the last half of August as I was about to go into hospital. Then got a call saying carpet must be fitted by end of July as SCS were stopping selling carpets and closing down their carpet distribution centre. Lady on the phone said they had had very little notice themselves. When the fitter came last week he told us it was his last job for SCS, he had arranged to move to Carpetright and then was told they were closing so he had no work at all planned after that day.

I feel sorry for people like the shop staff and distribution centre workers. who have lost jobs. I know when my step-son worked for a retailer who went bust a couple of days before payday, that he never saw his wage for that month.

Now more than ever, at least pay a deposit on a credit card.

DamaskRose Sat 03-Aug-24 17:21:44

So pleased Shelflife. We tried to buy a carpet from Carpetright some months ago and they were uninterested in even sending out someone to measure up. We were surprised as they been helpful and efficient in the past. Now we know why. We went with a local independent company and were very pleased with them.

I rarely use my debit card now, other than in ATMs, it's so simple to use a credit card and have a direct debit set up to pay the full balance at the end of the month.
It was pretty dishonest for CarpetRight to accept an order when the management must have known what was happening. I suppose that they didn't want to staff to know what was going on.

That's great news Shelflife, very pleased for you. smile

Just read this on the Tapi website:

To support those employees facing redundancy as a result of the administration process, in the 48 hours before the administration happened, Tapi has funded a service through Clarity Recruiting, that will offer FREE employment workshops covering CV preparation, interview skills and job search strategies. We have also contacted as many retailers as possible to help introduce affected Carpetright staff to new roles. We’ve asked these retailers to prioritise their application, helping them return to work as quickly as possible. Full details have been shared directly with those affected.

Yes.
Horrible for staff and their families.

NotSpaghetti Sat 03-Aug-24 14:43:47

Good news Shelflife - lucky escape!

At least you know exactly what you like and how much you need!
You may even find it cheaper elsewhere!

Cabbie21 Sat 03-Aug-24 13:50:23

As long as you pay the first £100 by Credit card you can get it refunded, no matter how you have paid for the rest.
Glad you are sorted, Shelflife.

Shelflife Sat 03-Aug-24 13:45:29

While I am of course very relieved I am also well aware of the devastation this has caused to thousands of staff at Carpetright, it must be a dreadful time for them .

Please, please, please always pay by credit card. There is more protection and there's nothing wrong with it - I get everything on my CC and always pay it off at the end of the month.
I know that's being wise after the event - I do hope you get your carpet or money back

SillyNanny321 Sat 03-Aug-24 12:37:10

Our local CarpetRight is on the list of those to be closed! Feel bad for those employed there as they have families to support with no chance of another job here! Never had a problem with CarpetRight & used them to carpet the whole bungalow after moving recently!

Nannashirlz Sat 03-Aug-24 12:34:30

Don’t blame the guy for knowing because he would probably have been in the dark same as you. Years ago I worked for a company went on holiday over spent knew getting paid few days after back off holidays. Back at home few days later while working a man walked into store with government documents to say store was now shut and to stop everything you are doing. I was store manager and didn’t know a thing about it. Also i or my staff got our wages the big creditors get paid first we were told to never expect our wages etc not enough years left for old bosses to live to pay up.don’t think banks do pay you on debit cards that’s why you should always pay on credit cards for more protection hopefully you get your carpet but also think about the poor workers who probably won’t have got paid and benefits takes 5 weeks to sort and they don’t pay you for first 3 days. The tears i cried my staff crying hoping i could help. Something i wouldn’t wish on anyone

HousePlantQueen Sat 03-Aug-24 12:25:52

Hope you get this sorted, but it was announced on 22nd July that they had called in the administrators, the store really shouldn't have taken your order if it was after that date.

Susieq62 Sat 03-Aug-24 11:47:07

If over £100 you are covered under section 75 of credit card act
Talk to your bank asap you have rights under debit card use!

SaxonGrace Sat 03-Aug-24 11:31:06

Depends on your bank, many cover debit cards in this situation as well as credit cards, rule of thumb for me I always pay for larger purchases by credit card

DiamondLily Thu 01-Aug-24 18:01:36

If you paid by card (even if only the deposit) you may be protected.

I didn't realise they've only just gone under, thought it happened weeks ago given all the reporting about it. When did you make the payment?

I hope your bank is sympathetic Shelflife, as I'm sure it's a fair amount of money. I dislike credit cards but do keep one exclusively for this type of payment.

It's so unscrupulous to take money in order to mitigate their losses when they know what's going to happen.
