Hello to all who have replied to my post. I've made a note of each snippet of helpful information, most of which has been new advice.
Thank you!

To avoid unexpected charges you can ask for a spending cap.
I set mine at zero, so that I can't spend over my usual monthly payment.
I put my phone in airplane mode and use WiFi when abroad.

I just switch off mobile data when abroad. Use Wi-Fi in hotel, cafes etc.

If you put your phone on airplane mode when youre in montengro you wont get charged accidentally and you can still use the camera etc

Be aware that, on a ferry, it's possible for the WiFi to be dropped and your phone may use data instead without telling you.

Also, even if you've bought extra coverage for Europe, there is an area between Europe and the UK which is deemed the rest of the world. I am a Three customer and I've furious to have been caught out for a second time recently. At least it's only a £20 overcharge not £40 as before but I feel conned by them. Talk about buyer beware!

LucyAnna2 Thanks! I will look up the 3 shops and give that a try. Please cross everything and wish me luck grin

You can switch off your roaming when you are abroad.
If you then connect to hotel Wi-Fi you can use what’s app to make and receive calls.

Other wise you can pay a fee and have a roaming package for the duration of your stay, a 7 day Europe pass with 3 is £12 but this could be less depending on how long you have been a customer.

This price applies if you are a pay monthly customer, it will be more of you are PAYG.

Miss Adventure thank you I have the 3 App on my iPhone. I followed the ‘contact us’ links and as its not a human you’re connecting with it either gives a link to press which throws up far too much info which I find confusing or the FAQ don’t relate to my query. I won’t give up but it is really testing my patience as I don’t want to acknowledge this is beyond me confused

There's probably a number programmed into your phone that you can use to speak directly to 3.
That's about the limit if my mobile phone knowledge, I'm afraid.

You probably are best to speak to someone at the shop. smile

I phoned our local Three shop earlier in the year to find out about roaming - they were very helpful

Petra thank you for taking the time to respond. I had already been on this site and frankly it was why I got confused.
I think I may visit a 3 shop there’s one in nearest city to where I live to hopefully get my head around this.

Hello Gransnetters I’m so confused about data roaming when going abroad.
I had a high phone bill last year because I didn’t switch off (?) roaming when I went to Montenegro. This year’s holiday is Slovenia.
Have looked on my phone provider (3) but it’s as clear as mud to me.
As you may have guessed I’m new to travelling abroad with a smart phone…. Ugh!
