After a few false starts after moving here 6 months ago, I found a lovely young Mum who comes once a fortnight and does a splendid job. I'd like to give her a Christmas gift and just wondering - do you give an actual gift or do you add a bit of extra cash on?

If cash, how much do you give?

I’ve got her a £25 Boots voucher. I pay her well, so think this is just about right.

I double the money and give a box of nice biscuits and a small pack of chocolates for her children.

I give my hair dresser £20 extra at Christmas.
My cleaner lives here with me, so I give him a gift on Christmas Day, along with making a very nice Christmas cake, which he loves to eat. However, I do expect a gift in return.

Baffling why you would expect a gift back!

How nice that petal53 has a husband/partner who is willing to do the cleaning!

I give my live-in chief-cook-and-bottle-washer a gift at Christmas too: he has already given me my gift. He has saved me a small fortune as I am prone to dropping precious crockery! Sadly, like me, he is suffering from anno domini, so it may soon be an electric dishwasher in regular use.
My gift to him will include my making him Christmas dinner! And our current electric dishwasher will wash the dishes afterwards!

I don’t have a cleaner so that doesn’t apply. I give my male hairdresser a bottle of wine. I don’t believe in tipping. They get paid for doing a job.

Glad I am not the only one that thinks like that. Nobody tips a checkout operator or a bus driver so why others?
I would just give double their pay the Christmas week.

I struggle with that as well , although I do tip .
My last good style , roots etc was three figures ( yes I was surprised - but a complete restyle )

We don’t have a cleaner but I paid a friend to do my ironing when I was unwell 4 years ago and it’s just carried on, I shall get her a good bottle of wine and money for her 2 girls.
We also have a dog walker once a week, our spaniel is giving her ‘Auntie’ one of the panettone and fizz hampers from M&S.

This year I'm giving my lovely lady a £30 M and S voucher.

I also tip my wonderful postman £20 in a card.. He looks out for/and knows most old people.

My daughter works in sales for High Net Worth clients. The employer says to refuse tips as it would imply subservience, they need to be thought of as equals.
I have stopped tipping hairdressers, always did find it uncomfortable. I used to have cleaners before I retired but it never occurred to me to tip.

I'm giving myself double pay as I do the cleaning and deserve it.

How strange that anybody should find this noteworthy

Excellent plan. Get yourself a nice gift, too - a voucher for the lady who does the cleaning to pay for extra hours? 😉

Hello all,
I like to bake them some goodies such as mince pies or savoury treats like bread or cheese twist.
Homemade is always nicer, although I know not everyone has that skill.

M&S is nice if you do not like baking.

Hope this helps.

MissAdventure Thu 12-Dec-24 13:27:08

That's a lovely idea. smile
A real personal touch, if you can bake things yourself.
