Is this a scam?

I keep getting emails from these people

t឵a឵x឵-v឵e឵h឵i឵c឵l឵e@u឵pd឵a឵t឵e.g឵o឵v.u឵k
From:
[email protected]

telling me my car tax is due. I usually get a letter and a green form, if memory isn't playing up, and pay online. But I have no paperwork, and as we have no tax discs any more, I just don't know if my car is taxed or not.
The insurance is due in November.
I don't know about you, but life was a lot easier when everything was written on paper!
Do I just ignore it?

I’m pretty sure this is a scam exdancer. Renewals come by post

You can check when your car tax expired on the Gov..U.K. site . Hope the link works.

Yes, and block them. It’s a scam. The DVLA still send paper reminders through the post. I always keep the email receipt they send when I have renewed online, though I know when my tax is due.

I agree that paying bills was much easier in the past. You got a bill with a tear-off slip and paid at the Post Office. There were also more actual offices where you could deal with people in person.

Barleyfields Sun 02-Mar-25 09:25:55

You can still pay your car tax if you wish.

Barleyfields Sun 02-Mar-25 09:26:15

That should have said ‘at the PO’.

Susie42 Sun 02-Mar-25 09:30:00

Check on gov.uk and you will find your details. I get a email reminder from the DVLA about my car tax. However, this looks as if it might be a scam as the email you mention doesn’t have gov.uk in it.

Grammaretto Sun 02-Mar-25 09:30:54

Yes it sounds like a scam. Check on the Government site . All you need is your car's number plate.

Georgesgran Sun 02-Mar-25 09:34:38

That’s why I opted to pay my car tax monthly, so it never runs out and if I see it on my bank statement, I know it’s paid.

B9exchange Sun 02-Mar-25 09:51:52

Log onto www.gov.uk/check-vehicle-tax, put in your car reg and you will see when your tax is due. Delete anything that isn't from a Gov.uk or DVLA website.

[email protected] tells you it is a scam. If it was genuine it would be .gov email address.

I make a note on my phone of any renewals, such as car tax, MOT, insurance. Also I diary appointments, birthdays, reminders, etc. I don’t know how I would cope if I lost my phone.

I always ignore those types of emails and go on the official site.

I have just paid my road tax and renewed my driving license online on the official DVLA website. My new license came within three days!

I’ve just had a scam email about my TV license, telling me my direct debit has been declined and inviting me to pay online.
I went onto my bank account and saw it has been paid.

AuntieE Sun 02-Mar-25 14:23:08

Anything that contains two different e-mail adresses like your example is very likely to be a scam.

So, phone the licensing authorities and ask them if they have just sent out a demand by e-mail.

Couple of days ago, I had a very irate man on the phone telling me that if I don’t pay them the money I owe Amazon, they would send the police to my door. I use Amazon a lot, and my Credit Card is registered with them. I put the phone down, ofcourse and straight away checked the balance on my bank accounts. I think they target older people, scaring them into paying up 😡

Ziplok Sun 02-Mar-25 15:34:48

It certainly sounds like a scam to me. As other posters say, the DVLA will send you a paper reminder for renewal which you can then choose to pay on line if you wish.
However, for peace of mind you could do as B9exchange suggests, and check your details on the gov. vehicle check tax website

Madmeg Sun 02-Mar-25 15:45:24

If you think it might be a scam then it probably is. If you click on the email address of the sender it often comes up with a more details address which bears no relation to any government (or other) email. That is a sure "red flag".

As others have said you can check when your car tax is due online - and it is very easy to do.

agnurse Mon 03-Mar-25 08:23:49

Might well be a scam.

I'd recommend that if you're concerned, you phone or otherwise contact the government department directly (via their contact details on the official government web site, not via any details provided in the suspect communication). They'll be able to tell you if there's an issue.

yellowcanary Mon 03-Mar-25 13:08:54

Definitely a scam - delete and ignore it. They send them to frighten people into paying into scammers bank accounts when insurance/tax isn't even due.

You can check the tax and MOT status of any car on the gov.uk website. I did it recently after a car was parked outside my house for about 6 days without moving at all. I was irritated that I couldn't park outside my own home while not wanting to annoy my neighbours by parking outside theirs. Fortunately it eventually disappeared, but had it not had tax and MOT I'd have notified the police.

jocork Mon 03-Mar-25 13:15:23

I pay annually online when I get the paper reminder. I keep the email receipts in an email folder along with any other receipts that I might need, such as paying the ULEZ charge.

My DH fell for this scam and gave them all his debit card details, address, phone no and even d.o.b. The web page he had to fill in looked real and the real email address the scam was sent from also look possibly real.
Luckily he had second thoughts and we were able to stop the card before anything was taken.
A week or so later he had phone call, purportedly from his bank, asking if he had made a large payment on his NEW card. They were asking to identify himself by giving them the middle 8 digits or the new card. As he is hard of hearing I took over the call - it is a joint account - so I asked the ‘bank’ to identify themselves by giving me info about myself. The caller said he did not have access to that info.
I hung up and contacted the bank directly on a different phone for safety. It wasn’t the bank that had called. The scammer had failed with his email so was now trying to get the new card no. The real bank agent told us that they would only need the middle 8 digits of a card if they had details of the cancelled debit card.
I think my DH has got away with it this time.

BTW you can check on an email address that appears genuine by either hovering over it, or if that doesn’t work, start a reply and the real email address will appear. Don’t actually send the reply.

I telephoned the DVLA and was assured it was correct, my licence renewal was due on 7th March, however I was very worried that's why I called TWICE. Theur calls are recorded. If you are being asked for bank details then it is a scam. I am just hoping that all is well.

Bellasnana Mon 03-Mar-25 13:30:08

I frequently receive the one about the road tax. It’s definitely a scam as I have never owned a car in the UK, nor have I lived there for the past 43 years.
