Then I really can’t understand it nannysyb. Maybe I do live in the Wild West after all. It shall have to remain a mystery.

My only enquiry with John Lewis rapidly convinced me that they are not interested in insuring a property if there is the slightest risk anything could go wrong, hence including all those risks you are never likely to run being included.

We tried to insure our house through them. They turned us down because of the danger of settlement and earth slip. We live at the foot of the downs and yes there is a bit of slip on an area of hillside well clear of our house, but in 30 years in the village none has ever occurred , it has no history of house settlement - and our house, like many others is over 500 years old and none show any sign of settlement.

Over the thirty years we have insured this house with several different companies not one has brought up the danger of settlement.

We tried to insure our French house with them because they did lots of advertising about how easy it was, again the conditions they wanted us to meet before they would insure the house were so onerous, we just went elsewhere.

He lived in central London grannysb not the suburbs. He uses them now that he lives in a rural area.

We're with NFU and in a London suburb, (zone 6.)

I’ve just insured my car with Tesco, good cover and saved me £200
I’m going to compare when renewing my house

Barleyfields Mon 10-Mar-25 12:51:30

NFU don’t insure everywhere Silverbridge. Mainly in country areas. They wouldn’t give my son insurance in London, simply because they don’t touch London not for any other reason.

Could it be an error? I’m pretty sure it was JL who once whacked up our house insurance premiums by a huge amount. When dh queried it, they said it was down to our being in a flood zone.

We live on top of a hill! The area has absolutely never been flooded. Houses on flat land much closer to the centre of town have been, though - maybe someone had entered the wrong postcode.

IIRC JL refused to change their quote, though so we found a different, more rational provider.

We are with Policy Expert Allira. House and contents

After phoning NFU for a car insurance quote, when I told them where I live they said they couldn’t / wouldn't insure me.
I said I am not in the Wild West but a market town in Kent.
They wouldn’t tell me why. I have never been refused insurance before and have over 10 year no claims.

I certainly recommend NFU. We use them for house, contents and cars. Very competitive with loyalty bonuses.

mumofmadboys Sat 08-Mar-25 16:20:27

Is everyone quoting for house AND contents? We have had a quote of £550 for ours with NFU. Up £20-30 from last year. Includes 6 bedroomed house and contents.

Something we really should do. Just had the renewal for our car insurance (two cars) and realised that last year we paid extra to insure a third driver, which has also been included on the renewal quote - but we added him for a temporary 3 months in 2023, which they knew about, and have continued it!

Similar with our house insurance. In 2023 we were abroad for 100 days on a world cruise and paid an extra premium. Just noticed that they "assumed" we had had the same absence in 2024, and will do so again this year. That added nearly £100 to last year's premium. At no time did we intimate that we would be taking a world cruise every year.

You should definitely have occupier’s liability cover, which is normally standard.

Yes, it is included with ours.

It's not you - that really is bonkers. Steel yourself and do a comparison site search through Martin Lewis' moneysavingexpert.com site. I've just paid around £200 for a 3 bedroom bungalow through Admiral.

Ditto, we went on Moneysupermarket and decided to change to Admiral.
Our home insurance is higher than yours, argymargy but still £150 cheaper than the company we were with.

The person who dealt with us at Admiral was very thorough and very helpful too.

I pay £260 a year for a 4 bedroom mid terrace house . John Lewis are taking advantage of your loyalty. They don’t deserve it.

I set aside an hour every year and search on comparethemarket.com. I give my current provider the opportunity to come close or match what I’ve found. If they can’t/won’t I move to another company.

It’s the same with car insurance. They hope we’ll all auto renew and not challenge their prices. I don’t let any policies auto renew. It always pays to shop around and it’s not as daunting as you think .

Georgesgran Fri 07-Mar-25 17:25:33

Mine’s just gone up from £340 to £466. No claims and everything is a year older and I only insure my ring and watch as extras. I did an online search and it’s quite competitive, so I’ll stick with the Devil I know.

Hope it’s ok to name the company?

My premium for a tiny two bed house has gone up £108 to £502.86.
I live on my own. Average residential area.
Must say, I usually just pay up each year as I hate the online business of trying to compare various establishments.
However, this large premium made me look at the policy in more detail.
My cover includes “dependent relative, public and occupiers liability, employer’s liability ( sum assured £10,000,000), music film or electronic down loads ( never done this in my life), student cover etc etc.
I called them today and the really pleasant clerk said these were all mandatory.
Is it just me or does that seem bonkers?
I said to the clerk, it’s like getting car insurance and you charge me for towing a caravan as well.
I’m sure someone will put me straight!
Thanks in advance.
