I've never been fussed about make-up. I only wear it occasionally, probably don't apply it properly, and my hands are now a tad unsteady. My eyelashes are short and pretty thin, and lipstick simply disappears after a few minutes, leaving my lips almost the same colour as the surrounding skin!

At 73 I've decided to "up my game" to avoid looking much older than I really am. But I haven't a clue where to start. My DM lived her life with a bit of powder, a dash of rouge, and a swipe of lipstick (that disappeared after a few minutes). She never even owned a mascara.

So, advice please girls on how to equip myself with a basic set of cosmetics. Not pricey, nothing outrageous, but above all quick and easy to apply (I'm serially impatient).

I've a pale complexion, blue eyes (but I wear specs so not that noticeable) and a fair share of wrinkles (though not such that I look haggard).

I did once have a make-over in Debenhams, and I looked fine with it, but couldn't achieve the same look myself, and the stuff cost a fortune - to me.

BB creams are popular now. Part skincare, part foundation. The Korean brand Eborian is very popular and I am a fan. Not the cheapest, but lasts ages. Might only be available on line though.
TBH, I think that blue eyeshadow is a bit dated - neutral browny shades are better.
I am a fan of MAC lipsticks, which have great staying power. And Clarins.
TKMaxx can be fun for a rummage - it’s surprising what you find - picked up a couple of brilliant cheap Italian lipsticks here.
No.7 mascaras are good and inexpensive.
Agree with the benefits of blusher and currently using a cream one. But they don’t always sit well on older skins. I would pick the lightest one possible for you skin tone and be prepared to layer it up.
If you do go down the consultation route, Don’t buy things at the time however much pressure you’re put under. Wait until you’ve left the shop and seen yourself in daylight and in your own home before you decide. Things never look the same in shop lighting.

If yoh have a Boots near you, you can book a 15 min makeup. I was walking through not long ago, stopped to have a look at stuff and tge assistant asked if I needed help. Well of course I did, how can I make myself look 20 years younger! As she wasn't busy she gave me the 15 min makeover. I bought a foundation and I really like it. For me eyemake up is an nightmare, needing glasses for close work how do you apply liner/mascara when you can't see clearly.

You can buy special glasses which have only one lens. This enables you to do one eye then flip the lens across to do the other. You can buy them on Amazon.

I like to put serum on first, it makes my skin smooth, I only wear foundation...no powder and a little blusher

Boots have a small magnifying mirror with suction pads on the back, so I stick it on to my main mirror & stand close to it. Ideal for holidays too👍

I use Bare Minerals Complexion Rescue moisturising foundation, and Zoeva metallic Khaki eye pencil.. both very light.. over moisturiser and skin primer..

Frugola Sun 16-Mar-25 15:05:10

4allweknow Buy yourself a really strong magnifying mirror.

Oh, girls, thanks for all this advice. But there are so many makes and ranges that it is making me dizzy. I will have to construct a spreadsheet to whittle things down, and with my luck I will make my choices and then find the shops don't have them! I'm interested in the lip-colour ideas cos my lips are non-existent nowadays.

I've been hunting for a blue eyeshadow for months but Boots tell me no-one wants it these days, it's all creams and browns.

Hey ho, into Stockport next week!

Buy a good make of mascara. They are all advertised as water-proof and are claimed not to run, but in my experience Lancôme is the only one that lives up to this. So it is worth choosing a good make.

Anything else should preferably be guaranteed not to cause allergies, or aggravate any you may have. Face powder and foundation can be a cheaper brand, so can eye-shadow, but cheap lipstick does tend either to disappear, or to come off all over the place.

Ask advice from the girls selling make-up with regards to shade, or of a friend with the same skin-tone that you have. Face powder should always be a shade lighter than foundation.

And buy good removing cream or lotion.

Practice makes perfect as far as make-up goes, so place yourself in front of a well-lit mirror and practise.

I found Prime Prometics mascara on line. It has really helped my lashes recover.

SueEH Sun 16-Mar-25 14:20:37

I just use a cheap and cheerful Boots tinted moisturiser, but do need blusher or I resemble a ghost. My eyes are very sensitive so only use mascara on special occasions- just a little eyeliner for every day with a touch of eyeshadow. I like Mii Forever Eye Colour crayons as they don’t irritate and have a high concentration of pigment so they last. And aren’t expensive.
And my lipstick also disappears pronto so I use Max Factor Lipfinity or a very similar one from L’Oreal

FlexibleFriend Sun 16-Mar-25 14:13:22

I just concentrate on my eyes these days as I still have quite long lashes but have found my lips have disappeared and now just have a line below my nose where my lips should be. Seriously starting to think about fillers. Also my cheeks are red and the skin has thickened (rosacea)??? and nothing seems to work on them to either hide or disguise. On the bright side I have thick hair and virtually zero wrinkles.

Schnackie2 Sun 16-Mar-25 14:02:12

I am 72 and have used Max Factor Lipfinity for years. It truly stays on all day, even with eating and drinking. Just today I have seen some videos for what is called Colour Changing Foundation for Mature Skin. There are several different brands (I picked one on Amazon). It is apparently a white cream which becomes the colour of your skin when applied. I've ordered some and will give it a try. Like Madmeg I have never worn much make up but am also trying to 'up my game'.

I’m another Laura Geller fan - I have a large compact with foundation, blusher and highlighter, just brush it on and blend in, very quick. I dye my brows and eyelash myself, and just use a Rimmel kohl eyeliner pencil. I like Maybelline gloss lipsticks.

harrysgran Sun 16-Mar-25 11:47:42

I started using Laura Geller baked foundation and blusher a few months ago I was recommend it by my niece it's so quick to apply and natural looking

loopyloo Sun 16-Mar-25 10:46:34

Good on you!
Can make so much difference.
And improves my own mood.
I like Nivea daydream, its tinted moisturiser and a bit of blusher.
Then you can play with the cover things, maybelline do a good one.
A lipstick, go for a nice bright one!
Superdrug is a good place.
And treat yourself to a store makeup.
Having said that I love Charlotte Tilbury,darlings....

Frugola Sun 16-Mar-25 10:24:21

I agree with Suki70. Look Fabulous Forever and their simple, clear videos and excellent products have been a saviour for me. Have received so many compliments too. A very natura "does she/doesn't she" effect.

CanadianGran Sat 15-Mar-25 20:31:43

for a lippy, I have the Maybelline SuperStay Lip Crayon; it lasts ages. I have a peachy one, and a pinky one. Cheap as chips.

I swear by L'Oreal Telescopic masacara; not expensive and isn't too thick and clumpy.

Also a tinted moisturizer; I own a Canadian brand, but in UK check out Boots No7 or La Roche Posay, both good drug store brands.

I don't wear blush, so can't advise, but I do get my eyebrows shaped and tinted every few months to keep them visible and tidy. Go ahead and treat yourself, I'm sure you are beautiful just as you are, but a bit of makeup can give you a boost.

MayBee70 Sat 15-Mar-25 20:23:20

Suki70

Try looking at Look Fabulous Forever videos on Youtube. It’s a make up brand made specially for older women and the videos show how to apply make up on older faces - all of them are clients.

I bought several of their eyeliners and couldn’t get on with them at all. Quite dry to put on and don’t blend very well.

fancythat Sat 15-Mar-25 20:21:18

I meant to say, I asked the Boots make up assistants for their advice.

fancythat Sat 15-Mar-25 20:20:32

When I had several weddings to attend a few years ago, I visited Boots.
And then chose a few items.
Cost was about £35 for what I chose.

Cossy Sat 15-Mar-25 20:03:28

If you want to go down the foundation route Bare Minerals along with a big brush!

On the odd occasion I do wear make up I use this!

Oh and maybe get your lashes tinted and lifted!

Casdon Sat 15-Mar-25 19:58:21

I would say go for a tinted moisturiser rather than a foundation. A light cover is less aging than a coat of foundation.

I agree with that. I use Nars tinted moisturiser, which is brilliant, pretty good coverage with a bit of glow, easy to blend and SPF30.
