Face masks and imminent cruise

Need some advice please.

We are due to go on QM2 next Sunday for 7 nights med cruise.

DH and I have both had heavy colds and wracking coughs for around 10 days. Fever has passed and we’ve both tested negative for Covid.

I’ve got some face masks and some cold/flu tablets to pack.

I’m hoping we will be fine.

What would you all do?

I’m not sure what you’re asking Cossy?

Wear one if you like. These days if I see someone wearing a facemask I assume they have covid and are being considerate and I give them a wide berth.

I have a weak immune system and I wear a high grade face mask when flying. That's the only time. I always used to pick up a bug on flights and I think it can't do any harm.

Next Sunday is a week away. I hope you feel better by then.
If you still have the symptoms you describe, face masks would be good for the sake of other travellers. Maybe people will wrongly assume you have Covid if you’re coughing and sneezing, whether you wear a mask or not.

If you’re still coughing I’d just steer clear of close contact with others, I’m sure you’d do that anyway. As said, another few days May see the back of it.

I’m not sure what you’re asking Cossy?

Well, here’s the thing, if this was a cheap uk trip I’d probably cancel and lose the money, I’m feeling a bit guilty about going.

On the other hand neither of us are unwell enough to cancel and claim back the cost on insurance and I guess worse case scenario we could stay in our cabins, we have outside ones with balconies and complimentary room service.

We’re on a cruise right now with over 3,000 passengers on board. So far I have seen only 2 with masks on but heard plenty of hacking coughs. I had Covid just before Christmas otherwise I would be worried !

Jaxjacky Sun 06-Apr-25 14:40:45

To be honest Cossy it wouldn’t cross my mind to cancel, you feel ok, others will be less considerate, go, have a great time.

If I was still coughing I’d be wearing a face mask. I’m travelling to NZ later in the year and I will certainly take heavy duty face masks with me.

We boarded QM2 in New York when my husband had a cold and cough in 2022. He didn't wear a mask and no-one said anything to him. I really don't think it's necessary to wear a mask, but if you feel you should, then do so.

aonk Sun 06-Apr-25 15:12:24

I think that if you wear a mask it’s unlikely to make any difference. You’ve been ill for some time so are highly unlikely to be infectious now. Just go and enjoy yourselves and don’t worry.

pascal30 Sun 06-Apr-25 15:23:26

I think it will be highly unlikely that you will be contagious after this amount of time. I would go and recover.. if you need to stay in your cabin you know you have room service.. Enjoy

Rosie51 Sun 06-Apr-25 15:26:34

I agree with aonk, I think it extremely unlikely you're infectious now let alone in a week's time. It's so thoughtful that you're considering your fellow passengers but I don't think masks would be necessary. Have a lovely cruise!

GrannyIvy Sun 06-Apr-25 15:35:29

Go and have a lovely time it will put you back on your feet. You shouldn’t be contagious by then.

Bon voyage Cossy. 😎

Skydancer Sun 06-Apr-25 18:03:11

Definitely wear your masks. It is courteous. Masks are considered the norm these days and it’s a good thing.

Jaxjacky Sun 06-Apr-25 19:05:28

On which cruises Skydancer? Not according to people I know that cruise from Southampton (7 miles away) or in any pictures online locally

Thank you, thank you all you lovelies! It’s our first ever cruise and we are beyond excited! flowers

Have a great time Cossy - I love a cruise - unfortunately my cruising companions are either unwell or uninterested 😢

.

You will be asked at check-in if you have had a temperature or tummy bug during the previous week. And that was always the case even prior to Covid.

Say "No" or you won't be allowed to board.

We tested positive for Covid on Cunard Queen Victoria last year and were confined to our cabin for 8 days .

JANH Mon 07-Apr-25 15:11:21

Go and enjoy your cruise. During cruises you find that many people cough, bugs are easily spread in an enclosed environment and the air con also helps spread bugs. If you feel safer with a mask, use one, have seen many with masks on during a cruise and when in ports of call. Have a wonderful time, much to see and do.

SaxonGrace Mon 07-Apr-25 15:37:07

Frankly unless you have high grade face masks designed for hospital use a normal face mask is pretty useless ( DD is a Dr. Of Microbiology) for those that wonder where this is coming from, seeing all those home made and many disgustingly dirty face masks during covid made me nauseous. Your holiday is a few days away I suspect you will be feeling much better go enjoy it.

LeslieL Mon 07-Apr-25 16:48:33

Be aware that QM2 has had norovirus on board

Mollygo Mon 07-Apr-25 16:52:53

If you’re more comfortable with a mask, then wear one. We had higher grade ones for the airport and the plane but our doc at the time said any masks were better than none, providing they were changed/washed frequently.
