I’ve lived in my small 2 bed end of terrace house for 14 years.
I’m in a small off shoot of a small road-the end of three houses.
I’m right up against a very high fence so there’s no where to go after my house therefore it feels bit isolated as no one would walk by etc.
Don’t think I’m overly neurotic but I can honestly say I have never opened the door to an unexpected knock or the bell!
I dash up stairs and look out the bedroom window.
If I’m expecting a visitor then I’m usually in the kitchen so can see them coming.
Anyone else this cautious?

We have a Ring door bell, handy to see who's at the door, especially when we are not in.
Otherwise we just open it, wouldn't think twice about it.

I always keep both front and back door locked. Sometimes dh returns from his polytunnel in a remote corner of the garden and gets agitated to find the door locked. My simple response is “ you could be the mad axeman for all I know.”

I've always kept my doors locked. When I was about 14 a young girl who lived nearby opened the door to a man who pushed her inside and murdered her.
It had an impact on me and my friends. We were very scared for a time and always kept doors locked since.

I use a chain so the door only opens a little a way.

If the visitor is someone I don’t know I balance the house phone on my shoulder and have a pretend conversation as I open the door, so I don’t appear to be alone.

If I dont expect anyone then I check through the peephole. If I dont recognise who is there & they ring or knock again I put the chain on before opening the door. Do not trust anyone I do not know!

Oreo

You’re right Nanato3
I keep a short sturdy chain on the door until I see who it is, never leave it unlocked, or the back door either.Times have changed.

Oreo I live in a village in a cul de sac comprising of bungalows and houses. A few weeks ago a young man knocked on the door , hubby answered and was asked did he want to buy anything , this person didn't have the usual case they usually come with . Hubby said no thank you and went to close the door when this person came closer to hubby he was a little aggressive, at this stage one of the dogs that had been sitting quietly by hubby's side started to growl , he turned tail and rushed down the path . We watched him from the window and he went to all the bungalows but none of the houses.
One of my neighbour in the house across the road was watching him too and taking a video of him . He looked really suspicious so neighbour reported him to the police .
I never trust anyone anymore .

I keep my front and back door locked all the time .
If anyone knocks on the front door I look through the window to see who it is, I have a peephole in the door too .
You can't be too careful . The people who are usually up to no good have often staked out vulnerable people and know who lives where .

I just open the door in daytime however if it’s after dark I put the chain on then open it

Cabbie21 Mon 14-Apr-25 13:39:22

I open the door during daylight but not after dark. We are open plan at the front and any intruders would be very visible from our road and the main road, both of which are very well lit.

Video door bell, with voice over. Glass front door also.. if we are in the conservatory we can see who is at the door. I am paranoid about security, as we had a spate of break ins around our area. The door is locked at all times.

Oldbat1 Mon 14-Apr-25 13:21:38

I dont need have my doors locked. I have dogs who spend all their day “on duty” watching. They only bark if a stranger walk passed. My front door is glass.

Grandmabatty Mon 14-Apr-25 13:17:37

I always open the front door, but it has four glass panels in it so I can easily see who is there. I get cold callers occasionally but send them packing. It wouldn't occur to me not to answer the door

I don't want a Ring doorbell, so have a peep keyhole fitted in my front door that enables me to see directly anyone standing outside the door. Works for me.

kircubbin2000 Mon 14-Apr-25 13:11:10

My bell broke and I haven't replaced it. I can usually see out the window if anyone calls but anyone who knows me goes round the back or raps the window.

Georgesgran Mon 14-Apr-25 13:06:12

Yes, but this is a small development, slightly off the beaten track, so we don’t get many ‘strangers’.

GrannyIvy Mon 14-Apr-25 12:47:10

I always keep the doors locked and always check who it is before opening the door. When I was younger I never had doors locked and my mum was always telling me I must keep the front door locked now I have turned into her ensuring my DD’s keep their doors locked😂

rosie1959 Mon 14-Apr-25 12:46:07

I just answer the door never thought of looking out first, then again my husband is usually around. Both now pensioners but he's 6'4 and built like a brick outhouse.

Whiff Mon 14-Apr-25 12:40:26

I do during the day . But after 7pm always check through the door and shout who is it and only open it if it's a delivery I was expecting. But my walking stick is handy to hit any would be attacker. 😁

Mil was always paranoid about answering the door and would rush upstairs to see who it was before answering the door. On one occasion she didn’t call out “who’s there?” but hid in the kitchen. Next thing there was the smashing of glass in a lounge window. She then rushed to the lounge. The breakers in saw her and scarpered pdq. She then ran out into the street after them! She was lucky. So please don’t just ignore the doorbell. Yell something out even if it’s only “Fred, doorbell”

Blossoming Mon 14-Apr-25 12:32:40

No I don’t. For one thing I can’t get to the front door if I’m in on my own. Any expected callers have the key safe code to let themselves in.

We did try a ring doorbell but it didn’t work for us.

Hellogirl1 Mon 14-Apr-25 12:23:49

My, family tell me I should keep the door locked all the time, but I don`t lock it till 8pm, unless I`m going upstairs for any length of time. If anyone knocks I answer, so far I`ve survived!

Churchview Mon 14-Apr-25 12:22:40

My cottage sits in the middle of its own garden, behind a high wall. Anyone who knocks on my door has already come onto my land. If I couldn't see them through the hall window I wouldn't open the door.

silverlining48 Mon 14-Apr-25 12:15:38

I have a metal thing which stops the front door from opening more than a little way. It’s not a chain, but similar idea.
I don’t use it much and just open the door, it’s usually my neighbour but think i should be more careful as we don’t have houses opposite so no one would necessarily notice a problem.

Shinamae Mon 14-Apr-25 12:09:57

Yes…
